  • The states and union territories include Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
  • It said that over a third of India’s coastline witnessed some degree of erosion between 1990 and 2018. West Bengal is the worst hit with over 60% of its shoreline under erosion.
  • Citing government data, the report said three out of every four river-monitoring stations in India have recorded alarming levels of heavy toxic metals — lead, iron, nickel, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, and copper.
  • In one-fourth of the monitoring stations, spread across 117 rivers and tributaries, high levels of two or more toxic metals have been reported.
  • Of the 33 monitoring stations in the Ganga river, contaminant levels in 10 are high.
  • The report said 45 to 64% of India’s forest cover is likely to become climate hotspots by 2030. By 2050, almost the entire forest cover of the country is likely to become a climate hotspot.
  • “The severity, in terms of damage due to climate change, is set to increase in 2085.
  • The report revealed that India recycled 12% and burnt 20% of the 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste it generated in 2019-20. There is no information on the remaining 68% of plastic waste, which most likely would have ended up in dumpsites and landfills.

  • India has achieved the target of 10% ethanol blending in petrol, five months ahead of schedule, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
  • This, he claimed, had led to a reduction of 27 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions and saved foreign exchange worth ₹41,000 crores. Farmers earned ₹40,600 crore in the past eight years due to an increase in ethanol blending, Mr. Modi said.
  • Last June, Mr. Modi made public the “Road map for ethanol blending in India, 2020-25”, which laid out a pathway for achieving 20% ethanol blending by 2025-26.

  • The Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, has 176 fishing cats, according to a census done by the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with the Fishing Cat Project (TFCP).   • About twice the size of a typical house cat, the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a feline known to even dive to catch fish. Wetlands are the favorite habitats of the fishing cat.
  • They are found in 10 Asian countries but have stayed undetected in Vietnam and Java for the last decade or so.
  • In India, fishing cats are mainly found in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, on the foothills of the Himalayas along the Ganga and Brahmaputra river valleys, and in the Western Ghats.
  • The fishing cat is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) lists the fishing cat in Appendix II part of Article IV of CITES.   • Nikhil Merchant-owned Swan Energy Ltd is planning to commission India’s first FSRU (floating, storage, and regasification unit) liquefied natural gas port near Jafrabad in Gujarat this year, as the country looks to boost its LNG imports.

  • In a bid to reduce carbon emissions to make the state greener and healthier, Punjab Government on Sunday announced to impose of a ban on single used plastic from coming July.

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to monetize highway stretches with a combined length of 1,750 km in 2022-23, a move which help it raise around Rs 20,000 crore. It has prepared an “indicative” list of road assets to be monetized in the current fiscal which includes 14 stretches with the length between 6.49 km and 280 km in different parts of the country.
  • Asset monetization is central to NHAI’s plan to mitigate its debt burden, which stood at a worrisome Rs 3.5 trillion at the end of the last financial year.
  • The NHAI will not borrow from the market in 2022-23. The budgetary outlay for the agency this year is estimated at Rs 1.34 trillion, much higher than the level in recent years
  • Replying to a question in Lok Sabha on December 2, 2021, the minister for road transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari had said the authority has identified a total of 21,700 km highway length for monetization in three years starting from FY23. In FY23, 5,500 km was to be monetized, 7,300 km in FY24, and 8,900 km in FY25. However, in the Budget for FY23, the monetization target was set at Rs 20,000 crore, indicating that just around 1,800 km stretches would be on offer.
