  • The World Day Against Child Labour is held every year on June 12. Theme for year 2019 is “Children should not work in fields, but on dreams”!
  • This day is launched by International Labour Organisation (ILO) to focus attention on the worldwide extinct of child labour, efforts and the action required to eliminate it.
  • In 2015, world leaders adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in which they have included a clause to end child labour.

  • The UAE Cabinet adopted the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 during its meeting at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.
  • One of the most important initiatives is the development of the first ‘National Wellbeing Observatory’ to support the policymaking process.
  • Chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 aims to make the UAE a world leader in quality of life through a number of strategic objectives and initiatives.

  • The National Book Trust announced that India has been designated as the Guest of Honour at the 33rd Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair), in Mexico.
  • The book fair, to be organised from November 30 – December 8, will be the largest book fair in the Spanish speaking world.
  • The dedicated India pavilion at the fair will showcase over 35 Indian authors and artists, along with 15 publishing houses.
  • India’s participation at the fair will also include a film festival showing movies like “Dangal”, “Chennai Express” and “Omkara”.

  • Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the Central government has decided to increase coverage of piped water to households from current 18 per cent to 100 per cent by 2024.
  • Sikkim had 99 per cent coverage of piped water to households, while some states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand had below five per cent.

  • The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is now looking to review the existing structure of LPG marketing in India — a move seen as an effort to bring in more private players.
  • The new committee, set up will look into issues related to definition or quality standards of LPG being marketed.

  • The Reserve Bank of India had announced in the Second Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy for the year 2019-20 that it will constitute a Committee to Review the ATM Interchange Fee Structure with a view to give a fillip to the ATM deployment in the unbanked areas.
  • The committee is headed by V. G. Kannan, Chief Executive, Indian Banks’ Association.
  • To review the existing structures and patterns of costs, charges and interchange fees for ATM transactions;
  • To review the overall patterns of usage of ATMs by cardholders and assess the impact, if any, on charges and interchange fees;
  • To assess the entire gamut of costs in respect of the ATM ecosystem;
  • To make recommendations on the optimal charge/interchange fee structure and pattern

  • With an aim to encourage digital transfer of funds, the Reserve Bank has waived off all charges for transactions using National Electronic Funds Transfer – NEFT and Real Time Gross Settlement – RTGS systems.
  • RBI has advised banks to pass on the benefits to their customers with effect from 1st July, 2019.
  • The Reserve Bank levies minimum charges on banks for transactions routed through its RTGS and NEFT System. RTGS is meant for large-value instantaneous fund transfers while NEFT System is used for fund transfers up to 2 lakh rupees.

  • The devotees of the Goddess fast and gather here on the eighth day of the full moon in the month of May/ June (The Annual Festival, held here, is a public holiday in Kashmir) when, according to belief, the Goddess changes the colour of the spring’s waters, which are ascribed to different manifestations of the Goddess.
  • The kheer bhawanitemple is dedicated to the Goddess Rajnya Devi, popularly known as Kheer Bhawani. The name ‘Kheer Bhawani’ is derived from the fact that thousands of devotees offer milk and “Kheer” or pudding to the sacred spring, as they believe the pudding turns black to warn of impending disaster.

  • Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been elected as the second President of Kazakhstan after winning June 9 presidential election with 70.96 percent of the vote (6,539,715 votes).
  • He took office as the President of Kazakhstan on 20 March 2019 succeeding Nursultan Nazarbayev who resigned on 19 March 2019 after 29 years in office.
  • Immediately after assuming the charge, Tokayev proposed renaming Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan to Nur-Sultan, after his predecessor, which was approved by the Parliament of Kazakhstan.

  • Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (Gift City) has appointed former Corporate Affairs Secretary Tapan Ray as its Managing Director.
  • With a career spanning more than three decades, Ray has held several key positions in the ministries of defence, textiles, power, science and technology, and planning in the Government of India.
  • He has also served as Principal Secretary, Finance Department, Government of Gujarat.
  • GIFT City is a Gujarat government project in partnership with IL&FS for developing India’s first global financial hub.

  • Google and Apple had spent a combined 12 years at the top of the list, with Google taking the top spot in 2018.

  • Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) has entered a tripartite agreement with French Railways (SNCF) & AFD, a French Agency.
  • Under this agreement, French Railways will provide up to 7 lakh euros for development of railway stations in India.
