World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated on 28 July to create awareness among people about the importance and significance of natural resources. Due to the increase in the human population, natural resources have been compromised to critically dangerous levels.

Earth’s natural resources include air, minerals, plants, soil, water, and wildlife. Conservation is the care and protection of these resources so that they can be preserved for future generations nature provides us with all the essentials for our daily needs. Due to overpopulation and human negligence we started to over-exploit our resources. If this continues, there will be no resources left for our future generations.

The Union environment ministry announced that India has designated five new Ramsar sites Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest, and Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu; Pala wetland in Mizoram, and Sakhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh as ‘wetlands of international importance, increasing the number of such sites in the country from 49 to 54.

Under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty for the conservation of wetlands, contracting parties are expected to identify and place suitable wetlands onto the ‘list of wetlands of international importance, also known as the Ramsar List.

Ministry of Women and Child Development has issued detailed guidelines for the ‘Mission Shakti’ scheme. Mission Shakti’ has two sub-schemes – ‘Sambal’ and ‘Samarthya’. While the “Sambal” sub-scheme is for the safety and security of women, the “Samarthya” sub-scheme is for the empowerment of women.

‘Mission Shakti’ is a scheme in mission mode aimed at strengthening interventions for women’s safety, security, and empowerment. It seeks to realize the Government’s commitment to “women-led development‟ by addressing issues affecting women on a life-cycle continuum basis and by making them equal partners in nation-building through convergence and citizen-ownership.

The Knowledge Portal for Khadi is a platform developed by the Center of Excellence for Khadi to provide design directions to the Khadi institutions. The portal was inaugurated by Ms. Preeta Verma, CEO-KVIC. The Center of Excellence for Khadi has been set up by KVIC, Ministry of MSME at NIFT, to support Khadi Institutions.

The portal intends to create design intervention by simplifying the trends especially suitable for Khadi. Four stories/design directions have been conceptualized and presented in Volume I. Each story has a key theme, color palette, and directions for woven designs, prints, textures, and surfaces. Every story has been separated into two segments – Home and Apparel.

The Centre has launched the national standards for civil service training institutions, aimed at elevating their quality and capacity stated by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. India became the first country in the world to come out with a unique model to create standards for civil service training institutions at the national level.

The national standards are developed by the CBC to create a baseline for central training institutes on their current capacity, for elevating their quality and capacity of training delivery and to harmonize standards for training. It will also set aspirations for training institutions to strive toward excellence.

Indian payments unicorn Paytm is set to end its seven-year association with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with reports that Mastercard will take over the title sponsorship of all domestic and international matches organized by the apex sports board.

BCCI has accepted Paytm’s plea for the re-assignment of its title sponsorship, valid until 2023, to Mastercard. The fintech unicorn had initially signed up to be associated with the BCCI for seven years. Mastercard will be assigned the rights till 2023–the original terms of the Paytm deal. They will continue to pay Rs 3.8 crore.

Open Network Digital Commerce (ONDC) has expanded its pilot to 15 more cities. This comes at a time when it plans to begin operations next month. Snapdeal has also signed the onboarding agreement with the network and will debut on it next month.

The network first began its pilot on April 29 in Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhopal, and Shillong. ONDC’s efforts will catalyze this growth in the right direction and help create an inclusive, enabling, and open-access-based digital commerce ecosystem. Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has been awarded by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) for his role in strengthening ties between India and US. Along with Naravane, former US Defence Secretary General Jim Mattis has also been awarded the public service award.

The USISPF noted that during his time as Chief of Staff of the Indian Army, Gen Naravane helped to modernize the Indian army, along with improving defense partnerships and growing interoperability between the US and India. Delhi Airport bagged the 13th spot on the list of the world’s busiest airports for the full year 2021, published by Airports Council International (ACI) World. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) accommodated 37.14 million passengers in 2021, an increase of 30.3% from 2020 when passenger traffic at the airport dropped to 28.5 million.

ACI published its World Airport Traffic Dataset, revealing the magnitude of the aviation industry’s recovery and confirming global air traffic rankings for the full year 2021. Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India have discovered new eel species in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district. Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Director Dr. Dhriti Banerjee stated that the new eel species were collected from the Petuaghat fishing harbor in the district this year.

The recently discovered eel species has been named Ariosoma Bengalense in name of its connection to the state. The species is distributed in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal. The color of the species is brown. The species has larger eyes in comparison to similar congeners.

Grammy and Oscar-winning music composer, AR Rahman has composed a ‘welcome anthem’ for the 44th International Chess Olympiad, 2022. The Olympiad, organized by the World Chess Federation and comprising open and women’s tournaments, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess, will be held in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, from 28 July to 10 August 2022.

International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that India will host the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. India, Bangladesh, England, and Sri Lanka were named as the four hosts for ICC women’s white-ball events from 2024-27. The hosts were selected via a bidding process overseen by an ICC Board sub-committee which included BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.

Bangladesh will host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, while the 2026 edition will be held in England. Sri Lanka has secured hosting rights for the Women’s T20 Champions Trophy, slated for 2027, provided it qualifies for the event.

City Union Bank and Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co Ltd (ABHICL), the health insurance subsidiary of Aditya Birla Capital Ltd, have announced a bancassurance partnership for the distribution of health insurance products of the network of branches across the country. 

Under the deal, ABHICL’s suite of health insurance plans will be made available to more than 4.4 million customers of CUB across 727+ branches in 153 districts of the country.  This alliance will help expand our reach in the southern market, which is a strong region for the health insurance sector, While ABHICL has a vast network of more than 10,000 hospitals across the country, the Southern region accounts for one-third of the network of hospitals at about 3500.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with the Government of India to provide an official development assistance (ODA) loan of 100,000 million Japanese Yen (around Rs 6,000 crore) as Tranche 3 for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR).

The project aims to develop a high-frequency mass transportation system by building the high-speed rail between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, using Japan’s Shinkansen technology or ‘Bullet Train’ and enhancing mobility in the country for regional economic development. Besides simplifying mobility and ease of connectivity with a safe and reliable inter-city transport system, the collaboration will ensure technology transfer to boost the Make in India drive.

Indermit Gill is appointed the new Chief Economist of the World Bank Group and Senior Vice-President for Development Economics after Kaushik Basu. Basu served from 2012-2016. Other prominent Indian-origin economists Raghuram Rajan and Gita Gopinath have served as chief economists at the International Monetary Fund.

Gill brings with him two decades of operational working experience at the World Bank. In his previous stint from 1993 to 2016, he had held several leadership positions including Director for Development Policy in the Office of the World Bank Chief Economist, and Regional Chief Economist for Europe and Central Asia.

Life Insurance Corporation has reduced shareholding in Sun Pharmaceuticals by selling a 2 percent stake in the company for about Rs 3,882 crore. Under Sebi norms, listed companies are required to intimate the stock exchanges when their shareholding in an entity falls by 2 percent or more.

The shares were sold at an average price of Rs 808.02 apiece, valuing the transactions at a total of Rs 3,881.85 crore. On the BSE, shares of LIC declined 0.70 percent to close at Rs 684.15 apiece while that of Sun Pharmaceuticals fell 0.75 percent to Rs 868.05 apiece.

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has allotted over 7.1 crore equity shares to internet major Google for Rs 734 for one piece. The allotment is part of Google’s commitment to invest $1 billion with Airtel, which included equity investment in the company worth $700 million, about Rs 5,224 crore.

The special committee of directors for preferential allotment of the company has at its meeting and approved the allotment of 71,176,839 equity shares of the face value of Rs 5 each fully paid up, on a preferential basis to Google International LLC (Google) at an issue price of Rs 734 per equity share.

David Trimble, 77 the Nobel peace prize-winning former first minister of Northern Ireland whose statecraft helped end decades of conflict. Trimble, a key architect of the landmark 1998 peace deal in the troubled UK province, won the prize along with pro-Irish leader John Hume that year after the pair sealed the historic agreement.

Trimble, who led the UUP for a decade from 1995, lost his UK House of Commons seat in 2005 and sat as a peer in the House of Lords — the upper chamber of the British parliament — from 2006.

Sushovan Bandyopadhyay, 84 famous as Bengal’s ‘one rupee doctor’ passed away in a Kolkata hospital. He had been suffering for about two years from kidney-related ailments. A doctor and a politician, Bandyopadhyay treated patients for close to 60 years. He had treated people for just one rupee and is fondly known as ‘Ek Takar Daktar.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020. The same year his name was recorded in the Guinness World Records for treating the maximum number of patients. He is an ex-MLA from Bolpur’s seat and had contested on a Congress ticket in 1984.
