Parliament passes Mineral Law (Amendment) Bill

  • Parliament gave its approval to the Mineral Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 with the Rajya Sabha adopting the same. The bill envisages curtailing time lag in operationalization of the coal blocks even after their allocation. The bill was passed in a division of votes with 83 members favouring and 12 opposing it. It was passed by the Lok Sabha

United Nations adopts political declaration on women’s rights

  • United Nations has adopted a stripped-down political declaration on women’s rights that seeks to preserve gains under threat but does not advocate new ways to ensure progress toward equality.
  • The declaration was adopted during the 64th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which has been drastically reduced from a two-week affair to a single hours-long meeting because of the global coronavirus outbreak

Two new land ports to be added as entry points for Bangladeshis: High Commissioner Riva Ganguly Das

  • Bangladeshi citizens travelling to India will have the option of two more land port entry points on their visas.The Bangladeshi visitors to India will be able to enter India from Bhomra and Akhaura side of Bangladesh connecting Gojadanga and Agartala respectively on Indian side

UN Security Council unanimously approves US Taliban peace agreement

  • United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved a United States’ resolution on the recent deal between the US and the Afghan Taliban, a rare endorsement of an agreement with a militant group. The US military has begun withdrawing troops as part of the pullout agreed in the February 29 pact with the Taliban

World Health Organization declares Covid-19 as a pandemic

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has characterised the new coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva that he is alarmed by the spread and severity of the outbreak, along with a lack of action taken to combat it

Bank of England cuts rates to 0.25 per cent

  • The Bank of England unexpectedly cut interest rates by half a per cent in a shock move to bolster Britain’s economy against disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
  • Members of the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee voted to cut Bank Rate for the first time since August 2016, to 25 per cent from 0.75 per cent, the central bank stated in a statement

Iran seeks financial assistance from IMF for the first time since 1962 to counter coronavirus pandemic

  • For the first time since 1962, the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund.
  • IMF’s KGeorgieva has stated that countries affected by #COVID19 will be supported via Rapid Financial Instrument. Central Bank requested access to this facility immediately.

  • Retirement fund body, Employees’ Provident Fund Organization, (EPFO) lowered the interest rate on provident fund deposits to 5 per cent for the current financial year.Earlier it was 8.65 percent

PhonePe switches to ICICI for UPI, @ybl handles to continue working

  • As the Yes Bank fiasco hit UPI-based transactions , PhonePe that was solely using Yes Bank’s services worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and ICICI bank to ensure all its services were up and running within a day.
  • PhonePe, with close to 20 crore users, saw an extended service outage, which started immediately after the RBI moratorium on Yes Bank on March 5, lasting for nearly 24 hours.

FICCI-IBA survey Says Proportion of Banks Reporting Rise in NPA Levels Increases From 26% To 28% In July to December 2019

  • The tenth round of the FICCI-IBA survey was carried out for the period July to December 2019. A total of 18 banks consisting of public sector, private sector and foreign banks participated in the survey. These banks together represent about 50% of the banking industry, as classified by asset size

FDI inflows recorded highest ever for fiscal year 2018-19

  • The total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow was over 318 billion US dollars between 2014 and September 2019 representing nearly 50 percent of the cumulative FDI in India since April 2000.
  • In 2018-19, the FDI inflow stood at a record 62 billion US dollars, highest ever recorded for a fiscal year

SBI cuts marginal cost of lending rate by up to 15 points across tenors

  • The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) stated it has reduced its marginal cost of fund-based lending rate (MCLR) by up to 15 basis points across various tenors, effective March 10.
  • SBI stated that the bank has reduced its one-year MCLR by 10 basis points to 75 per cent from 7.85 per cent earlier. This is 10th consecutive cut in MCLR by the bank in the current fiscal

India Post to launch free digital locker service

  • For the first time in India, the Department of Posts is introducing a free digital parcel locker service in the city to enable customers collect their consignment from specified post offices at their convenience. The facility will be available in two post offices  — the Nabadiganta IT Post Office in Sector 5 of Salt Lake City and another in New Town

State Bank of India to buy shares worth 7,250 crore rupees of cash-strapped Yes Bank

  • The State Bank of India stated that it will buy shares worth 7,250 crore rupees of the cash-strapped Yes Bank in accordance with the draft reconstruction scheme envisaged by the Reserve Bank of India.
  • SBI’s shareholding in Yes Bank will remain within 49 percent of the paid-up capital

RBI announces US dollar sell/buy swap to provide liquidity to foreign exchange market

  • Observing mismatch in US dollar liquidity across the world, the Reserve Bank has announced a six month US dollar sell/buy swap to provide liquidity to the foreign exchange market. RBI stated, the first swap worth two billion US dollars will be conducted

SBI scraps minimum monthly balance requirement

  • State Bank of India (SBI) has decided to do away with the maintenance of Average Monthly Balance (AMB) for all savings bank (SB) accounts and cut the interest rate on these accounts to 3 per cent from 25 per cent. Further, it has waived SMS charges levied on a quarterly basis.
  • India’s largest bank seems to have done a fine balancing act in waiving AMB and SMS charges and at the same time cutting the SB interest rate. This move by SBI will prompt other banks to follow suit

BSNL, SBI partner to launch UPI-based payment platform Bharat InstaPay

  • State-owned BSNL in partnership with State Bank of India launched a UPI-based payment platform, Bharat InstaPay.
  • This digital payment platform is an initiative of BSNL powered by SBI, which shall enable all types of channel partners of BSNL for doing all their payment transactions digitally on a 24-by-7 basis

ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Axis join SBI for YES Bank stake.

  • Meanwhile, in separate filings with the bourses, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank stated they would be investing in YES Bank. While ICICI Bank will pump in Rs.1,000 crore by picking up 100 crore shares at Rs.10 each, Axis Bank proposes to invest Rs. 600 crore (60 crore shares of Rs. 2 each at a premium of ₹8).
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank will invest Rs. 500 crore by acquiring 50 crore equity shares at Rs. 10 per share. On its part, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) will infuse Rs. 1,000 crore

RBI to infuse Rs. 4.05 lakh crore rupee liquidity

  • To counterbalance possible domestic liquidity effects of the $2 billion sell-buy swap operation that it will conduct on March 16, 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to provide rupee liquidity for seven days aggregating Rs. 25,000 crore to the financial system . This is in addition to the already announced provision of 14-day rupee liquidity aggregating Rs. 3.80 lakh crore

RBI cuts UCB exposure limits to group of connected borrowers; give one more year to meet enhanced PSL norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut the prudential exposure limits for urban co-operative banks (UCBs) to a group of connected borrowers. It also gave these banks one more year to meet the enhanced priority sector lending (PSL) norms.
  • The RBI stated henceforth, the prudential exposure limits for UCBs to a group of connected borrowers/parties will be 25 per cent (40 per cent), respectively, of their tier-I capital

UBS cuts India GDP growth forecast to 5.1 per cent for FY21

  • Swiss brokerage UBS sharply cut its 2020-21 GDP growth forecast for India to 1 per cent on fears around the coronavirus outbreak and also weak credit growth domestically. The brokerage also cut its FY20 growth estimate marginally to 4.8 per cent. The GDP growth is set to slip to a decadal low of 5 per cent for FY20 as per official estimates and hopes of a revival are being pinned on the next fiscal

Govt approves TCS, DLF proposals to set up SEZs for IT in Haryana, UP

  • The government has approved the proposals of software firm TCS and realty major DLF to set up special economic zones (SEZs) for IT sector in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
  • TCS has proposed to set up an IT/ITeS SEZ in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, on 19.9 hectares land. The total proposed investment for the project is Rs 2,433.72 crore.

Moody’s cuts India growth forecast to 5.3 per cent for 2020 on dampened domestic demand

  • Moody’s Investors Service cut its growth forecast for India to 3 per cent for 2020 from 5.4 per cent estimated earlier, as it expects the coronavirus outbreak to dampen domestic demand globally.

CoinDCX launches crypto-referral initiative in India

  • CoinDCX, a cryptocurrency trading platform has launched its crypto-referral initiative in India.
  • This initiative is aimed at providing an incentive for crypto adoption by rewarding Rs 500 for every new referral in addition to Rs 500 worth of bitcoin for every new user

Rolls-Royce partners with IIT-Madras for joint research programmes

  • Industrial technology giant Rolls-Royce has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) to promote joint research programmes.

  • Facebook India called for applications for its CSR initiative, Facebook Pragati, powered by N/Core (The/Nudge Centre for Social Innovation).

Zomato enters fintech space, launches co-branded credit card with RBL, Master Card

  • Gurugram-based food delivery giant Zomato has inked a strategic partnership with Master Card and RBL to launch a co-branded credit card. Joining the likes of Amazon, Ola and Flipkart in the fintech space, the online food delivery platform will offer a host of benefits to the cardholders

Asian Development Bank to give USD 200 million to companies manufacturing products to combat coronavirus

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) stated it will provide USD 200 million (about Rs 1,480 crore) to companies manufacturing and distributing medicines, and other items needed to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

India’s current account deficit narrows to $1.4 bn in December quarter

  • The country’s current account deficit (CAD) narrowed sharply to $1.4 billion, or 2 per cent of GDP, for the December 2019 quarter, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated . The deficit had stood at 2.7 per cent in the corresponding quarter a year ago and 0.9 per cent in the previous quarter

World Bank to provide USD 80 mn to improve water management in HP

  • The World Bank will provide USD 80 million (about Rs 600 crore) loan to improve water management practices and increase agricultural productivity in selected gram panchayats or village councils in Himachal Pradesh
