.

A.25 hours

B.20 hours

C.30 hours

D.45 hours

E.None of these

Answers :

1) Answer: B

Efficiency of A : B= 4 : 1

Time ratio of A : B = 1 : 4

1/x + 1/4x = 5/24

(4+1)/4x = 5/24

5/4x = 5/24

x= 6 hours

Required time = 4x = 4*6 = 24 hours

2) Answer: B

A = 1/6

B = 1/7.5

C = 1/2

A + B + C = 1/6 + 1/7.5 – 1/2

= (5 + 4 – 15)/30

= -1/5

3) Answer: D

Total work = 100 units

P = 100/20 = 5 units/day

Q = 100/25 = 4 units/day

Total work done in 7 days = 5 * 2 + 5 * (5 + 4) = 55 units

Remaining work = 100 – 55 = 45 units

Days taken by P = 45/5 = 9 days

4) Answer: D

Let the capacity of tank = 36 units (LCM of 12 and 18)

Efficiency of Pipe A = 3 units/min

Efficiency of Pipe B = 2 units/min

Tank filled in 5 mins = 5 x (3 + 2) = 25 units

Time taken by A to fill the remaining tank = (36 – 25)/3 = 3 (2/3) mins

5) Answer: C

Let the total amount of work (LCM 15, 18 and 27) = 270

Work done by P alone in one hour = 18

Work done by Q alone in one hour = 15

Work done by R alone in one hour = -10

Work done by P and Q together in 5 hours=(18+15)*5=165

Work done by Q and R together in 12 hours=(15-10)*12=60

The pipe Q can fill the remaining cistern in = (270-165-60)/15=3 hours

6) Answer: C

Part of the cistern filled in 5 mins = 5 * (1/15 + 1/20) = 7/12

Remaining part = 1 – 7/12 = 5/12

Part of the cistern filled in 1 min, when all the pipes are opened = 1/15 + 1/20 – 1/10 = 1/60

1/60 part filled in 1 min.

5/12 part filled in 5/12 * 60 = 25 mins

7) Answer: D

A + B – C = 1/24 + 1/36 – 1/40

= (15 + 10 – 9)/360

= 2/45

Required time = 45/2 = 22.5 hours

8) Answer: A

Let pipe A fill the tank in x minutes

Pipe B can fill the tank in x*100/125 = 4x/5 minutes

1/x + 5/4x = 1/8

x=18 minutes

Capacity of cistern = 18*5 = 90 lit

9) Answer: B

Time ratio of A and B = 3:4

1/3x + 1/30 = 1/10

1/3x = 1/15

x = 5

B = 4 * 5 = 20

A and B together can fill the tank = 1/15 – 1/20 = 1/60

10) Answer: C

1/48 – 1/144 = (3 – 1)/144 = 2/144 = 1/72

The full tank will be filled in 72 hours

 5/12th of the tank will be filled in 5/12 * 72 = 30 hours
