Directions (1-10): What should come in place of the questions mark (?) in the following questions?

1.A car runs at the speed of 40 km/hr when not serviced and runs at 65 km/hr when serviced. After servicing, the car covers a certain distance in 5 hr. How much approximate time will the car take to cover the same distance when not serviced?

  1. 10 hr
  2. 7 hr
  3. 12 hr
  4. 8 hr
  5. None of these
1). When serviced, the distance covered by the car = 65 × 5 = 325 km
When not serviced, the time taken by the car to cover 325 km is,
325/40 = 8.125 = 8 hr.
Answer is: D

2.A train travels at the rate of 50 km/hr without stoppages and it travels at 40 km/hr with stoppages. How many minutes does the train stop on an average per hour?

  1. 6 min
  2. 12 min
  3. 18 min
  4. 14 min
  5. None of these
2). Due to stoppages, it covers 10 km less per hour.
∴ time taken to cover 10 km = [(10/50)×60]= 12 min
Answer is: B

3. Ratio of speed of car and a train is 17:22. If speed of train is 25 km/hr more than speed of car, then find distance travelled by car in 5 hours?

  1. 425 km
  2. 475 km
  3. 375 km
  4. 390 km
  5. None of these
3). Let speed of Car and Train be 17X and 22X,
According from the question,
22X – 17X = 25
5X = 25; ∴ X = 5
Hence, speed of car is 17 × 5 = 85 km/hr
Distance travelled by car in 5 hr is,
= 5×85 = 425 km.
Answer is: A

4.A train of length 150m crosses a pole in 3 seconds. How long will it take to cross a bridge of length 200m?

  1. 9 sec
  2. 7 sec
  3. 6.5 sec
  4. 5 sec
  5. None of these
4). The length of pole is not considered, hence speed of train is = 150/3 = 50 m/s
Time taken to cross the bridge = (length of train + length of bridge)/ Speed of train
= 350 / 50 = 7 sec.
Answer: B

5. The ratio between the speeds of two trains is 3:5. If the second train runs 720 km in 6 hours, then what is the speed of the first train?

  1. 120 km/hr
  2. 108 km/hr
  3. 72 km/hr
  4. 96 km/hr
  5. None of these
5). Let the speed of two trains be 3X and 5X,
Then the speed of the second train =720/6= 120 km/hr
∴ the speed of first train = [(3/5)×120]= 72 km/hr
Answer: C

6.A boat’s speed in still water is 5 km/hr. While river is flowing with the speed of 2 km/hr. and time taken to cover a certain distance upstream is 2 hr more than time taken to cover the same distance downstream. Find the distance.

  1. 11 km
  2. 10.9 km
  3. 12.5 km
  4. 10.5 km
  5. None of these
6).Let the distance be X km
Speed of downstream = (5 + 2) =7
Speed of upstream = (5 – 2) =3
(x/3)+2 = x/7
(x+6)/3 = x/7
7X – 3X = 42
∴ X = 10.5 km
Answer: D

7.A man swimming upstream takes 6 hours to cover a certain distance, while it takes 4 hours to cover the same distance swimming downstream. What is the ratio between the speed of the man and speed of the stream respectively?

  1. 5 : 1
  2. 1 : 5
  3. 5 : 2
  4. Cannot be determined
  5. None of these
7).Let the man’s speed upstream be X and that downstream be Y
Then, distance covered upstream in 6 hrs = Distance covered downstream in 4 hr
6×X = 4×Y
Y = 3/2 X
Required Ratio = [(Y+X)/2]: [(Y-X)/2] =(1/2)[(3X/2) + X]:1/2[(3X/2) – X] = (1/2)(5X/2) : 1/2(1X/2)
= (5X/4) : (X/4)
= 5 : 1
Answer: A

8.A man rows in still water with the speed of 4.5 km/hr to go to certain place and to come back in total of 360 minutes. Find the distance, if the river is flowing with a speed of 1.5 km/hr?

  1. 10 km
  2. 11.5 km
  3. 12 km
  4. Cannot be determined
  5. None of these
8). The speed of the man = 4.5 km/hr
The speed of the stream = 1.5 km/hr and time = 360 min = 6 hr
Hence, speed downstream = 6 km/hr; speed upstream = 3 km/hr
(D/6)+(D/3)=6 hr = 3D + 6D = 18×6 = 108
9D = 108
D = 12 km
Answer: C

9. A boat takes 1 hr less to travel 20 km downstream than to travel the same distance upstream. If the speed of the boat in still water is 15 kmph then what is the speed of the stream?

  1. 10 km/hr
  2. 12 km/hr
  3. 6 km/hr
  4. 5 km/hr
  5. None of these
9). Let the speed of the stream X kmph. Then,
Speed of downstream = (15 + X)
Speed of upstream = (15 – X)
[20/(15-x)] – [20/(15+x)] = 1
[1/(15-x)] – [1/(15+x)] = 1/20
40X = 225 – X2
X2 + 40X – 225 = 0
(X+ 40)(X – 5) = 0
X = 5 kmph.
Hence, speed of the stream is 5 kmph
Answer: D

10.If Vicky can row 5 km/h upstream and 9 km/hr downstream then what is the velocity of the current?

  1. 4 km/hr
  2. 3 km/hr
  3. 2 km/hr
  4. Cannot be determined
  5. None of these
10).Speed downstream = 9 km/hr
Speed upstream = 5 km/hr
Velocity of current = (1/2)×(Speed downstream – Speed upstream)
= (1/2)× (9 – 5) = 4 / 2 = 2 km/hr.
