1) Abysmal (Adjective) — बेहद खराब या भय उत्पन्न करनेवाला

Definition: Extremely bad; Appalling.

Synonyms: Dreadful, Awful, Terrible, Frightful, Atrocious

Antonyms: Superb

Usage: Given the abysmal rate of convictions in the country, it is inexcusable that it took so long.

 

2) Emphasize (Verb) — महत्त्व देना

Definition: Give special importance or value to (something) in speaking or writing.

Synonyms:  Highlight, Point Up, Spotlight

Antonyms: Understate, Play down

Usage: The need to protect witnesses has been emphasised by Law Commission reports and court judgments for years.

 

3) Acquittal (Noun) — दोषमुक्ति

Definition: A judgement or verdict that a person is not guilty of the crime with which they have been charged

Synonyms: Absolution, Clearing, Exoneration

Antonyms: Conviction

Usage: Witnesses turning hostile is a major reason for most acquittals.

 

4) Tardy (Adjective) – अपेक्षित समय से विलंबित

Definition: Delaying or delayed beyond the right or expected time; late.

Synonyms: Crawling, Creeping, Dallying, Dawdling, Dilatory

Antonyms: Early, Inopportune, Precocious, Premature

Usage: The tardy judicial process seldom takes into account the distance they have travelled or the time they have lost in attending co.urt

 

5)  Pathetic  (Adjective) — दयनीय

Definition: Arousing pity, especially through vulnerability or sadness.

Synonyms: Pitiful, Pitiable, Moving, Touching, Poignant

Antonyms: Comical, Cheerful

Usage: As Justice A.K. Sikri points out, the condition of witnesses in the Indian legal system is “pathetic”, as it takes them for granted.

 

6) Gratify (Verb) — कृतार्थ करना

Definition: give (someone) pleasure or satisfaction.

Synonyms:   please, gladden,  delight, make someone feel good, satisfy

Antonyms: displease,          frustrate

Usage: It is gratifying that the court has played a proactive role in getting the Centre and the States to come up with a concrete proposal.

 

7) Minutiae (Noun) — छोटे, सटीक, या मामूली विवरण

Definition: The small, precise, or trivial details of something.

Synonyms: Details, Niceties, Subtleties, Finer Points, Particulars

Usage: In its minutiae the scheme appears workable, but its efficacy will be confirmed only with the passage of time.

 

8) Competent (Adjective) — सामथर्यवान

Definition: Having the necessary ability, knowledge, or skill to do something successfully.

Synonyms: Capable, Able, Proficient, Adept, Adroit.

Antonyms: Incompetent,  Inadequate.

Usage: A witness protection order will be passed by a competent authority.

 

9) Proximate (Adjective) — निकटस्थ

Definition: (Especially of the cause of something) closest in relationship; immediate.

Synonyms:  Approaching, Coming, Forthcoming, Imminent

Antonyms: Bygone, Erstwhile, Foregone, Former

Usage: Basic features such as in camera trial, proximate physical protection and anonymising of testimony and references to witnesses in the records are not difficult to implement.

 

10) Totter (Verb) — लड़खड़ाते हुए चलना

Definition: move in a feeble or unsteady way.

Synonyms: teeter, walk unsteadily, stagger, wobble, stumble

Antonyms: controlled, firm, settled, stable, steady

Usage: the scheme could help strengthen India’s tottering criminal justice system.
