NSE and BSE Penalise Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited for Non-Compliance with Securities and Exchange Board of India Board Composition Norms

  • Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), a state-run telecom firm, was penalised by NSE and BSE for non-compliance with Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) board composition norms.
  • Both exchanges imposed a fine of ₹6.73 lakh each on the company.
  • The non-compliance included the improper constitution of the Nomination & Remuneration Committee, Stakeholder Relationship Committee, and Risk Management Committee.

Bank of India Labels Reliance Communications Loan as Fraudulent Over 2016 Fund Diversion

  • Bank of India has classified the loan account of Reliance Communications (RCom) as fraudulent, citing alleged fund diversion in 2016.
  • The bank’s action also named former director Anil Ambani.
  • The bank had sanctioned a ₹700 crore loan in August 2016 for capital expenditure, operations, and liability repayment.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) had made a similar classification in June 2025, alleging misappropriation of bank funds.
  • RCom was declared a Non-Performing Asset (NPA) on June 30, 2017, with an outstanding of ₹724.78 crore owed to Bank of India.

Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Amendments to Labour Laws

  • The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved amendments to labour laws to increase daily working hours for private sector employees.
  • The decision aligns Maharashtra with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Tripura, which have already implemented similar reforms.

Key Highlights

  • Under the Factories Act, 1948, daily work hours increased from 9 to 12 hours, rest breaks allowed after 6 hours (earlier 5), overtime cap raised from 115 to 144 hours per quarter with mandatory written consent, and weekly work hours extended from 10.5 to 12 hours.
  • Under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017, daily work hours increased from 9 to 10 hours, overtime limit raised from 125 to 144 hours per quarter, emergency duty hours extended up to 12 hours, applicable to establishments with 20 or more workers, while small establishments with less than 20 workers only need to notify authorities instead of registration.
  • Workers’ rights are safeguarded as overtime wages will be paid at double rates and written consent is mandatory for extended hours.
  • The move is expected to attract investment, generate employment, improve ease of doing business, and create a more inclusive work environment, particularly for women workers.

Union Cabinet Approves ₹1,500 Crore Incentive Scheme for Critical Mineral Recycling

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved an Incentive Scheme worth ₹1,500 crore to develop recycling capacity for separation and production of critical minerals from secondary sources.
  • The scheme is part of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), which aims to build domestic capacity and supply chain resilience in critical minerals. Since the critical mineral value chain (exploration, auction, mine operationalization, and acquisition of foreign assets) has a long gestation period, the immediate way to ensure sustainability is recycling secondary sources.

Key Highlights

  • The scheme will have a tenure of six years from Financial Year 2025-26 to Financial Year 2030-31.
  • Eligible feedstock under the scheme includes e-waste, Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) scrap, and scrap other than e-waste and LIB scrap such as catalytic converters in end-of-life vehicles.
  • Beneficiaries will include both large, established recyclers and small, new recyclers including start-ups, with one-third of the outlay earmarked for small and new recyclers.
  • The scheme is applicable to investments in new units, expansion of capacity, modernization, and diversification of existing units. It will provide incentives for the recycling value chain involved in the actual extraction of critical minerals, not for those involved only in black mass production.
  • Incentives under the scheme:
    • Capital Expenditure (Capex) subsidy of 20% on plant, machinery, equipment, and associated utilities for production within a specified timeframe (reduced subsidy beyond deadline).
    • Operational Expenditure (Opex) subsidy on incremental sales over the base year (Financial Year 2025-26), comprising 40% subsidy in the 2nd year and 60% subsidy in the 5th year from Financial Year 2026-27 to Financial Year 2030-31, subject to achieving specified incremental sales thresholds.
    • Ceiling limits: Maximum total incentive (Capex + Opex) of ₹50 crore for large entities and ₹25 crore for small entities, with Opex subsidy capped at ₹10 crore and ₹5 crore respectively.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal Meets United Arab Emirates Minister Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi in New Delhi to Boost India–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

  • Union Minister Piyush Goyal met with United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi in New Delhi on August 29, 2025, to strengthen the India–UAE CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement).
  • Both ministers reviewed CEPA progress and reaffirmed the trade target of USD 100 billion (non-oil, non-precious metals) by 2030.
  • The meeting included the launch of the BHARATI (Bharat’s Hub for Agritech, Resilience, Advancement and Incubation) initiative by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
  • BHARATI is a key part of APEDA’s vision to achieve USD 50 billion in agri-food exports by 2030.
  • Both sides emphasized the need for timely trade data sharing and agreed that the Sub-Committee on Services will convene within two months.

India, Japan Sign Pact to Jointly Explore Moon’s South Pole Under Chandrayaan-5 Mission

  • India and Japan have signed an implementing arrangement to jointly explore the Moon’s south pole as part of the Chandrayaan-5 mission.
  • The agreement was signed between the space agencies of both nations, ISRO and JAXA, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Japan.
  • The mission, also referred to as the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) Mission, aims to study volatile materials, including water, on the lunar surface.
  • The launch will be carried out using JAXA’s H3-24L rocket, which will carry an Indian-built lander and a Japan-made rover.

  • INS Trikand, an Indian Naval stealth frigate, called at Alexandria, Egypt on September 1, 2025, during its deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The ship will participate in Exercise Bright Star 2025, which is being hosted by Egypt from September 1 to 10, 2025.
  • Bright Star 2025 is a multilateral exercise conducted under the US Central Command, covering air, land, and sea domains to strengthen regional security and cooperation.
  • Indian Army and Indian Air Force contingents will also participate in the exercise, making it a tri-service event for India.
  • Apart from India, USA, and Egypt, other participating countries include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Greece, Cyprus, and Italy.

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the acquisition of a 24.99% stake and voting rights of YES Bank by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC).
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had previously granted its approval to SMBC to acquire up to a 24.99% stake in YES Bank.
  • The acquisition specifically involves the transfer of share capital and voting rights of YES Bank to SMBC.
  • SMBC is a Japan-based commercial bank, and a wholly-owned subsidiary and a core operating entity of the Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.
  • SMBC operates in India through its branches located in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and an offshore branch in GIFT City, Gandhinagar.
  • YES Bank is a publicly listed private sector bank that offers a wide range of banking and financial services.

Rakesh Gangwal and Family Trust Divest 3.1% Stake in IndiGo Worth ₹7,027 Crore, Shares Drop 4%

  • Rakesh Gangwal, a promoter of InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), and his family trust have divested a 3.1% stake in IndiGo through block deals valued at ₹7,027.7 crore.
  • As a result of this sale, their total holding in IndiGo fell to 4.71% from 7.81% as of June 2025.
  • Gangwal, a co-founder of IndiGo, has been steadily exiting the airline following a previous fallout with co-founder Rahul Bhatia.

  • The 10th edition of NIRF Rankings 2025 was released by the Ministry of Education in New Delhi.
  • Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras) secured 1st position in the Overall category for the 7th consecutive year, followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru (2nd) and IIT-Mumbai (3rd).

National Teachers Day 2025: September 5

  • In India, every year 5th of September is celebrated as National Teachers Day to contribute to our teachers.
  • Fifth September is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarevepalli Radhakrishnan, the former president of India who was a well-known Teacher, Scholar, and Philosopher.

History

  • In India, the President, Dr. Sarevepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day. He was one of the greatest teachers and very popular among the students.
  • On his birthday his students and friends asked to celebrate it grandly. For that, he replied instead of celebrating in a grand manner he wanted to observe his birthday as a Teachers day.
  • Since 1962 every year 5th of September is celebrated as National Teachers Day in India.
  • As the common adage goes, the future of a country lies in the hands of its children, and teachers, as mentors, can mould students into future leaders who shape the destiny of India.

International Day of Charity 2024: September 5

  • In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared the International Day of Charity was observed on the 5th of September.
  • They declared September 5 as an International Day of Charity in order to remember the death anniversary of Mother Theresa who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979.

History

  • This day was constructed by a Hungarian civil society with the support of the Hungarian government.
  • On 17 December 2012, the UN General Assembly declared the 5th of September as the International Day of Charity.
  • To honour the tireless work of Mother Thersa for charity, her death anniversary is celebrated as the International Day of Charity.
