Maharashtra under President’s rule for 3rd time in 59-year history 

  • Imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra is the first instance in the 59-year-old history of the state when Article 356 has been invoked due to inability of political parties to form a government after an assembly election.
  • Overall, this is third time that Maharashtra has come under the central rule. The present-day Maharashtra came into existence on May 1, 1960.
  • The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 105 seats followed by the Shiv Sena 56, the NCP 54 and the Congress 44.
  • Article 356 of the Constitution, under which President’s rule is imposed in a state, deals with ‘failure of constitutional machinery in the state’.
  • The Union Cabinet recommended President’s rule in Maharashtra.
  • Hence, this is the first time that central rule has been imposed in the state due to inability of political parties to form a government after an assembly election.

SBI cuts India’s GDP growth forecast to 4.2% for Q2, 5% for FY20

  • State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, has predicted that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth may slip to a record low of 4.2 per cent in the second quarter amid low automobile sales, deceleration in air traffic movements, flattening of core sector growth and declining investment in construction and infrastructure.
  • India GDP growth has already hit a 6-year low of 5 per cent during June quarter of this fiscal (Q1FY20).
  • The lender has also cut GDP forecast for FY20 to 5 per cent from 6.1 per cent earlier, but expects growth rate to pick up pace in FY21 to 6.2 per cent.

  • Former all-rounder Shane Watson has been appointed as the president of the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA).

Hyderabad to host ‘IndiaJoy’ from November 20-23

  • The city is all set to host the four day prestigious ‘IndiaJoy’, an important global platform for Digital, Media and Entertainment Corporations to collaborate and innovate, from November 20.
  • IndiaJoy Festival in its 2nd edition, supported by the state government, has a line up of nine world-class events that include IGDC (India Game Developer Conference), Desi Toons, VFX Summit, InfluencerCon, Investor-Publisher Connect, E-Sports, (Over the Top) OTT Pulse and Indiajoy Music Fest.
  • The government will be promoting its flagship initiative IMAGE Towers during the event.
  • In order to make the city and the State the most favored destination for investment in Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics sector, the Telangana Government launched IMAGE Policy in April 2016.
  • IMAGE Tower will be a Center of Excellence with state- of-the-art facilities to act as a catalyst for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comics sector.

PM Modi to attend 11th BRICS Summit beginning in Brasilia

  • The 11th BRICS Summit will begin in Brazil’s capital Brasilia. BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • The theme of this year’s summit is “Economic Growth for an Innovative Future.”
  • There is great potential in sectors like trade, defence, agriculture and energy.
  • BRICS will also discuss counter-terrorism cooperation as one of its priority areas this year. BRICS Innovation Network, BRICS Institute of Future Network and a Women Business Alliance will also be launched.

India to Host Shanghai Summit’s Heads of Government Council Meet In 2020

  • India will host the 19th council of heads of government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation next year, the first such high level meeting of the eight-member grouping to be organised by New Delhi.
  • The SCO is a China-led eight-member economic and security bloc in which India and Pakistan were admitted as full members in 2017. Its founding members included China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The SCO has four observer states, namely Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia. It has six dialogue partners, namely Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka.
  • The SCO, which has its headquarters in Beijing, holds summits of heads of states as well as heads of government meetings annually in member countries. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the summit, the heads of the government meetings are attended by senior Cabinet Ministers.

Air Chief to inaugurate ISAM Conference in Bengaluru

  • Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria will inaugurate the 58th Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM) Annual Conference which aims to address contemporary issues and applications in the subject of aerospace medicine.
  • The event will take place at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Indian Air Force, Bengaluru from November 14-16.
  • The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Changing Paradigms in Aerospace Healthcare

SpaceX launches 60 mini satellites for cheaper global Internet 

  • Elon Musk-run SpaceX has launched 60 “Starlink” satellites into low-Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida that will bring cheaper Internet access to the world.
  • The 60 mini satellites went into space aboard Falcon 9 rocket, ending a nearly three-month launch hiatus for the company.
  • The “Starlink” satellites will be deployed at an altitude of 280 km to beam broadband Internet services.
  • The 60 Starlink satellites are part of the second batch of SpaceXs broadband Internet mega constellation.
  • SpaceX is developing a low latency, broadband internet system to meet the needs of consumers across the globe.

Ficci signs Fintech MoU with Singapore

  • Industry body Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) signed an agreement with Singapore Fintech Association (SFA) to boost cooperation for development of financial technology industry in India and the southeast Asian country.
  • The FICCI-SFA MoU is a partnership agreement to share information about fintech and collaborate on mutually beneficial initiatives that will further development of fintech industry in both the countries
  • A soft launch is scheduled of the acceptance of BHIM-UPI QR based payments in Singapore with a live transaction at a merchant terminal at the festival on Wednesday.
  • This is the first time that BHIM app will go international. The project is being jointly developed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS) of Singapore.
  • This is a QR based payment system that will allow anyone with a BHIM app to make payments at NETS terminals in Singapore

India-US tri-services exercise ‘Tiger Triumph’ to begin in Vizag

  • The maiden India-US joint tri-services Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise named ‘Tiger Triumph’ is scheduled to begin at Visakhapatnam.
  • In consonance with the growing partnership between India and the US, Tiger Triumph is scheduled on the Eastern seaboard from November 13 to 21, 2019.
  • Indian Naval ships Jalashwa, Airavat and Sandhayak, Indian Army troops from 19 Madras and 7 Guards, and Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopters and Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) would be participating in the exercise.
  • The US would be represented by US Navy Ship Germantown with troops from the US Third Marine Division. The Exercise is aimed to develop interoperability for conducting HADR operations.
  • The opening ceremony along with a Joint Flag Parade will be held onboard INS Jalashwa on November 14.
  • The Exercise would culminate with a closing ceremony onboard US Naval Ship Germantown on November 21.

  • Javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar has won India’s second gold defending his World Para Athletics Championships title in the men’s F46 javelin throw event in Dubai.
  • With this, India has secured three Tokyo Paralympic Games quota, along with the bronze winner Ajeet Singh and Rinku
  • Yogesh Kathuniya added a silver for India in men’s discus throw F56 event with a best throw of 42.05m
