SBI PO Selection Process:

Authorities will recruit the individuals based on their performance of the written exam, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview. It is also notable that, aspirants have to clear the initial rounds to get qualify to appear for the next rounds. Here, the step-wise recruitment process is given below. Further applicants can also find the rules and regulations are given below. The SBI PO selection process will be done in 3 stages. The 3 stages are,

  • Preliminary exam.
  • Mains exam
  • Group Exercises and final interview.

The candidates have to clear all the stages to get selected as a PO in the State Bank of India. The SBI Bank PO syllabus and exam pattern for each stage is given in detail for your reference.

SBI PO Prelims Pattern:

The SBI PO prelims pattern is the first stage of the selection process. It consists of 3 sections namely English language, quantitative aptitude, and reasoning ability. The important details of the preliminary exam are given below for your reference. Use the SBI PO pre syllabus 2020 for the prelims exam preparation.

  • The reasoning ability and quantitative aptitude sections will have 35 questions each. 
  • The English language section has 30 questions. Thus the total number of questions in the exam is 100.
  • For each correct answer, you will get one mark. Thus the exam is conducted for a total of 100 marks.
  • At the same time, you will lose 0.25 marks for each wrong answer as a penalty. So don’t mark the answers by wild guess.
  • All the sections will have a separate time duration of 20 minutes. After the end of 20 minutes, the next section will appear automatically. So you cannot change the sections as per your wish.
  • There is no sectional cut-off for getting selected. But it is required to clear the overall cut off to pass the exam.

The candidates who clear the prelims exam can take the mains exam. The prelims exam pattern is given below.

SBI PO Mains Pattern:

The SBI PO mains exam has 4 sections. They are English language, general awareness, data interpretation & analysis, and reasoning ability & computer aptitude. The important details of the mains exam are given here in detail for your reference. All the candidates who are appeared and cleared the SBI PO Prelims Exam are eligible to appear for the SBI PO Mains Exam. Utilize the SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern for mains exam preparation. All the applicants have to check the exam pattern and detailed timing details to crack the SBI PO Mains Examination.

  • Totally 45 questions are asked in the reasoning ability and computer aptitude section. The maximum marks for this section are 60. Also, the sectional timing for this section is 60 minutes.
  • The data interpretation and analysis section will have 35 questions. The total marks for this section are 60. The time duration allocated for this section alone is 45 minutes.
  • The general awareness section contains 40 questions for 40 marks. For this section, the time limit is 35 minutes.
  • In the English language section, 35 questions are available for 40 marks. 
  • There is negative marking for the wrong answers. The penalty for each wrong answer is 1/4th of the marks assigned to the question.

Apart from these sections, there will be a descriptive test. After the completion of the 4 sections, you have to attend the descriptive test on the computer.  In this descriptive test, you have to type letter writing and an essay in 30 minutes. The total marks for the descriptive test are 50. The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

SBI PO Group Exercise/Discussion & Interview:

Candidates should get the aggregate marks prescribed by the board. The marks may vary depends on the category. The aggregate marks have been calculated from both Mains & Descriptive Test. A sufficient number of candidates in each category will be called for Group Exercises and Interview. Candidates belonging to the OBC Non-Creamy Layer should get the OBC certificate containing the ‘Non-Creamy layer’ clause. Aspirants should submit the OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate during the time of Group Exercises and Interview. Candidates without submitting the OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate will not be entertained into the selection process.

Final Score Calculation for SBI PO Exam:

There are certain important points on the basis of which the final score for the SBI PO exam is calculated:

  • The preliminary Exam is the initial stage of the selection process. It’s just a qualifying stage for the mains exam. Marks scored in the Preliminary Exam will not be considered in the final score. These are only taken into account to qualify Mains Exam.
  • Mains & Descriptive Test is the middle part of the selection process. Candidates must have to get good marks. Scores obtained in the mains & descriptive test will be considered for the final selection
  • The ratio of marks followed by the board for the final selection between the Main exam and interview will be 80:20 respectively.
  • The candidates have to qualify both in Mains and Group Exercise & Interview separately. Marks secured by the candidates in the Written Test (out of 250 marks) are converted to out of 75 and marks secured in Group Exercises & Interview (out of 50 marks) are converted to out of 25.
  • After the conversion of the aggregating marks of Written Test and Group Exercises & Interview out of 100, the final Merit list will get released. As per the top-ranked merit list, the selection will be made in each category.

SBI PO Prelims Preparation Tips:

Reasoning Ability: 

Some of the focus topics in this section are puzzles, syllogism, seating arrangement, inequality, blood relation, etc. As per the SBI PO reasoning syllabus 2020, 35 questions are asked in prelims for this section. For each topic, the expected number of questions is given below. In some shifts, they may not ask about blood relations and in some shifts, they may miss the inequality topic. Likewise in all shifts, some topics may not be asked. So in each shifts, the candidates will get a different combinations of topics. Hence prepare all the topics by referring to the expected weightage given below.

Puzzle and Seating Arrangement: In this section give more importance to various types of puzzle and seating arrangement questions. Up to 4 sets of puzzles and seating arrangements are expected. That is, it may cover around 20 marks. If you prepare difficult puzzles, then you can adapt to any tough puzzles in the exam. In your study plan prepared with SBI PO syllabus 2020, allocate more time to this topic as it has more weightage. Focus on the puzzle types given below,

  • Linear seating arrangement with up to 10 to12 persons (facing both south and north mixed). In this single or parallel row types are expected.
  • Circular and square seating arrangement with 2 variables, containing up to 8 persons are expected.
  • Box based month based, flat and floor-based puzzles.

Syllogism: This topic is an easy pick for the candidates. Mostly you can expect 4 to 5 questions from this section. Concentrate on the new model syllogism of ‘only a few’ type.

Inequality: Like syllogism, candidates will show interest to attend this topic initially. As per the updated SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern, you can also expect coded inequality types. In this topic also around 4 to 5 questions may be asked. So you can easily fetch around 10 marks combined from the syllogism and inequality.

Blood Relation: In this topic 3 or 4 questions can be asked. Also, the questions will be at a moderate level. So you can easily pick these 3 questions on practice. Prepare for the coded blood relation also.

Direction Sense: In this topic also you can expect questions for 3 to 4 marks. Mostly these questions are asked at an easy level. With normal practice itself, you can easily score those 3 to 4 marks. As per the latest updated SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern 2020, you can expect coded direction sense types. This will be slightly time-consuming than the normal types. So practice more such questions also.

Coding-Decoding: In this topic, you can expect 5 questions. Mostly easy types of questions are asked. You also practice more new model difficult questions on this topic from the exam point of view. You can get a clue when you solve questions from the previous year’s question papers.

Other than the above topics you can expect 1 to 3 questions from topics like order & ranking, alphanumeric series, etc. Refer to the SBI PO pre syllabus 2020 and allocate sufficient time as per the difficulty level. A well-planned preparation will help you to score good marks very easily.

Quantitative Aptitude:

For this Quantitative Aptitude section also each shift will carry question papers with a different combinations of topics. Here the expected number of questions is predicted for all the topics. You also don’t skip any topic in your preparation. As per the weightage and your preparation level, you can keep your convenient strategy for the exam.

Data Interpretation: This is the topic that has more weightage in this section. You can expect 2 or 3 sets of DI. That is, it can cover around 10 to 15 questions in the exam. As per the latest updated SBI PO quantitative aptitude syllabus, focus on the following types of DI topics given below,

  • Pie chart
  • Line graph
  • Bar chart
  • Caselet DI
  • Missing DI, etc.

Quadratic Equation: Normally you can expect 5 questions from this section. Mostly you can expect easy level questions. Maybe 1 or 2 will be at a moderate level.

Missing number series / wrong number series: In either of these two topics 5 questions may be asked. Do more mock test practice to attend all the 5 questions quickly.

Simplification / Approximation: In any of these two topics, you can expect around 5 questions. If asked, your first pick should be this topic.

Data Sufficiency: This section is quite tricky. You need a lot of practice to solve these questions in less time duration. Totally 5 questions may be asked from this topic.

Word Problems: Around 10 questions are asked under various topics. As per the SBI PO quantitative syllabus 2020, your focus topics for word problems are,

  • Partnership, average, percentage, ratio, and proportion.
  • Profit and loss.
  • Simple interest and compound interest.

Reading Comprehension: Mostly from this topic, around 6 to 10 questions may be asked. Most of the students may not attend this part. If you are strong in this section you can go for it and attend at least 4 to 6 questions. Also, make sure that you are not taking overtime for this part.

SBI PO Pre Exam Training:

Q: How many attempts are there for SBI PO?
A: For SBI PO the number of attempts will vary as per the category of the candidates. They are:

  • SC / SC (PWD) / ST / ST (PWD)– No restriction
  • OBC / OBC (PWD)– 7

  • General / EWS– 4

Q: Is the syllabus of SBI PO and IBPS PO the same?
A: There is not any major difference in the syllabus of both. But few changes are there in the mains exam pattern of SBI PO and IBPS PO.
Q: Is there any sectional cut-off in both Prelims and Mains?
A: Candidates need to qualify each section as well as the overall cut-off in the main exam to be eligible for an interview but in the year 2017, there is no Sectional cut-off in the SBI PO mains exam.
