Pi Approximation Day

  • Pi Approximation Day is observed on 22 July every year because of the value of Pi that is 22/7. Whereas Pi Day is celebrated on 14 March which is similar to the approximate value of 3.14 and also coincides with the Albert Einstein’s birthday.

Flight operations start on 8 more routes under regional connectivity scheme UDAAN

  • Eight more routes have started operations under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN.
  • The scheme seeks to boost regional air connectivity and provides various incentives to airlines.
  • The routes are Mysore – Hyderabad, Mysore – Goa, Mysore – Cochin and Kolkata – Shillong.
  • The total UDAN routes that are now operational has increased to 194.

CRPF unveils country’s first body protector for women personnel in combat

  • The CRPF unveiled the country’s first prototype of a body protector for women personnel which it has jointly developed with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
  • The “gender-specific protective gear” weighs 6 kg and has a different design and layout from the regular fibre-made black coloured body protector which is worn by both men and women police and paramilitary personnel during riot-control duties and regulation of public protests.
  • One such female body protector, that would protect an individual from the neck to the toe with chest, hand, legs, shin and thigh guards, is estimated to cost₹9,000.

All lanes at toll plazas to be ‘FAS Tag lanes’ from December 1

  • To ensure seamless traffic and prevent congestion at toll plazas, the government has decided to declare all lanes at toll fee plaza on national highways as ‘FASTag lanes’ from December 1.
  • However, among all lanes, one ‘hybrid lane’ will be allowed at every toll plaza to facilitate and monitor over-dimensional or oversized vehicles, where FASTag and other modes of payment will be accepted.
  • After December 1, non-FASTag users will be charged double the fee if they pass through FASTag-only lanes.

HRD Minister launches UGC scheme Paramarsh, Quality Assurance in higher education in focus

  • The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” launched the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) scheme named ‘Paramarsh’ on July 18, 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The Paramarsh scheme has been launched for mentoring National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) Accreditation Aspirant Institutions to promote Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
  • The scheme will target 1000 Higher Education Institutions for mentoring with a specific focus on quality as enumerated in the UGC “Quality Mandate”.
  • Initially 71 universities and 391 colleges having NAAC score of 3.26 and above will mentor five colleges each.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates two bridges in J&K

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 1000 meter long Ujh Bridge in Kathua district and 617.40-meter Basantar Bridge in samba district.
  • Terming construction of Ujh and Basantar bridges a great achievement by Border Roads Organisation.
  • The roads and bridges are the lifeline of any nation and play a vital role in the socio-economic development of far-flung regions and population.
  • Project Sampark was launched on January 1, 1965 to develop and maintain the operational road infrastructure of Armed Forces in Border Areas of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Telangana, World Economic Forum sign agreement on drone deliveries

  • The World Economic Forum Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Network announced that it will embark on an innovative drone-delivery project called Medicine from the Sky.
  • The project will run in partnership with the State Government of Telangana and Health Net Global and will include a comprehensive study of drone-based deliveries for blood, vaccines, medical samples and organs.
  • The project will help facilitate better decision-making in healthcare supply chains, focus on “last-mile” deliveries to augment national healthcare programmes and address issues that affect the medical distribution system.

Kerala to set up India’s first space tech park in Thiruvananthapuram

  • The Kerala government will set up the country’s first space tech park at Thiruvananthapuram’s Knowledge City. The move is aimed at making the city a manufacturing hub for space-related technology.
  • A space museum named after former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will also be a part of the infrastructure. The state government has issued orders to allot the land required for the facility.
  • The entire investment will be made by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), a major space research centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • Santhosh Kurup, has been appointed as the special officer of the space park project.

Aditya Birla Payments Bank shuts operations 18 months after launch

  • Aditya Birla Payments Bank, a venture between Idea Cellular and Aditya Birla Nuvo, has shut down its operations.
  • The payments bank that was only 18-month old has asked its customers to transfer their balances before July 26.
  • It was a venture between Aditya Birla Nuvo (51%) and Idea Cellular (49%).
  • Stringent KYC norms and stiff competition were some of the key reasons that led to the winding up of the payments bank.

DefExpo India-2020 to be held in Lucknow

  • The Eleventh biennial edition of DefExpo India – 2020 is scheduled to be held for the first time in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow in February 2020.
  • The main theme of the DefExpo India- 2020 will be  — India – the Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub and the focus will be on Digital Transformation of Defence.
  • The exhibition will also highlight the emergence of Uttar Pradesh as an attractive destination for investment in the defence sector and act as a platform for alliances and joint ventures in the defence industry.
  • The DefExpo will provide an opportunity to the major foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers to collaborate with the Indian defence industry and help promote Make in India initiative of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

  • India’s Vivek Kohli and M P Singh have been elected as chairman and secretary general respectively of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF).The elections were held in Bhubaneswar.
  • Commonwealth Championships taking place in Cuttack.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju launches AIFF Golden Baby Leagues handbook

  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju launched the All India Football Federation’s Golden Baby Leagues handbook 2019-20 on the sidelines of the Intercontinental Cup in Ahemadabad.
  • The launch marked the renaming of the ‘AIFF Baby Leagues’ to ‘AIFF Golden Baby Leagues’, with emphasis being laid for ages under 6 to under 12 both for girls and boys.
  • The handbook is a guide to help the stakeholder to organise the Golden Baby League. The Leagues aim to provide access to football in localities irrespective of gender, religion, economic background, or ethnic origin.

Indian, Chinese Army To Conduct ‘Hand-in-Hand’ Military Drills In Meghalaya

  • The military drill between the two countries according to North East Now, was resumed last year post a freeze over the Doklam stand-off. The joint military exercise “Hand-in-Hand” will be held at Umroi near Shillong in Meghalaya.
  • The last exercise, which was the seventh edition, was held at Chengdu in December 2018.
  • The hand-in-hand joint exercise was started in 2007 in Kunming but was halted after the Chinese troops came to Belgaum in Karnataka for the second edition.

Intercontinental Cup 2019: North Korea Beat Tajikistan to Win Title

  • North Korea triumphed in the second edition of Intercontinental Cup football tournament beating Tajikistan by a solitary goal in the final.
  • Both finalists were the two lowest-ranked teams of the four-nation tournament, the other participants being hosts India and Syria.
  • The champions got richer by USD 50000 while the runners-up received USD 25000.

Indian Men & Women’s teams win Commonwealth Table Tennis title

  • In Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship held in Cuttack, India made a record by winning gold in both men’s and women’s category.
  • The Indian men won the final match  defeating England 3-2. The Indian women team defeated England 3-0 in final match.
  • The Indian women team won the gold for the first time in the history in the commonwealth games.

Indian bodybuilder Ravinder Malik clinches Mr South Asia title

  • Indian bodybuilder Ravinder Kumar Malik has clinched Mr. South Asia title. He has crowned the overall champion at 12th South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship in Kathmandu.
  • Malik, the winner of 80 kg category, was adjudged best bodybuilder among the winners of nine senior men’s weight categories.
  • Afghanistan won a total 15 medals including six gold, four silver and five bronze. Nepal bagged three gold, seven silver and six bronze and India claimed four gold, five silver and one bronze medal. The Maldives won three gold and two bronze medals, Pakistan bagged one gold, two silver and two bronze, while Bhutan finished last with a bronze medal.

Shiva Thapa Becomes India’s First Gold-medallist in Kazakhstan President’s Cup

  • Four-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa became India’s first gold-medallist at the President’s Cup boxing tournament after getting a walkover in the final in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Making his international debut in the newly-introduced Olympic category of 63kg, Thapa was to fight Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin in the summit clash but his opponent had to pull out due to injury.

Former Delhi CM, Sheila Dixit passes away

  • Former Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. The veteran leader and head of the Delhi unit of the Congress was 81.
  • She was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Delhi and she served from 1998 to 2013. She had served as the CM of Delhi for 3 times. She was from the Congress party.
