Tree Ambulance launched in Chennai

  • A unique ‘Tree Ambulance’ service – an initiative to provide care to trees besides spread green cover, was launched by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.
  • The service launched for the first time in the state, aims at providing first aid treatment to trees, uprooted tree planting, seed bank, seed ball distribution, plant distribution, aiding tree plantation, shifting trees, survey of trees and removal of dead trees.
  • The ambulance can be availed through the helpline number – 9941006786. People can register themselves as volunteers in their website- treeambulance.org.
  • Expressing delight over flagging off the ‘Tree Ambulance’ on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2019.

Orchha town in Madhya Pradesh makes it to tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites

  • The architectural heritage of Orchha town in Madhya Pradesh which depict peculiar style of the Bundela dynasty have been included in the tentative list of the UNESCO’s world heritage sites following a proposal sent by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to the United Nations (UN) body.
  • Orchha is situated on the banks of the Betwa river. It is located around 80 km away from Tikamgarh district in Madhya Pradesh and 15 km from Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh. Orchha was built by king Rudra Pratap Singh of Bundela dynasty in the 16th century. The ancient town is famous for its Chaturbhuj Temple, Orchha fort complex, Raja Mahal among others.

Ind-Ra lowers FY 19 GDP estimate to 6.9 pc with Q4 forecast at 6.3 pc

  • India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) said that it expects India’s GDP growth rate during 2018-19 to be 6.9 per cent as against the advance estimate of 7 per cent.
  • It said the fourth quarter (January to March) GDP growth to decelerate to 6.3 per cent from 6.6 per cent in the third quarter (October to December 2018).
  • There will be another fourth-quarter GDP slowdown starting from the fourth quarter of 2017-18. Clearly, FY19 will be the second consecutive year of an economic slowdown in India.
  • It said that 2018-19 will be the second consecutive year of an economic slowdown in India. The GDP growth was 7.2 per cent during 2017-18.

Facebook planning to launch its own cryptocurrency, GlobalCoin, by 2020

  • Facebook plans to launch its cryptocurrency by the first quarter of next year
  • The currency, which is being referred to internally as “GlobalCoin,” will reportedly be available in around a dozen countries at launch, where it’s expected to offer people affordable and secure payments without the need for a bank account.

Guy Gunaratne wins Dylan Thomas prize

  • Debut novelist Guy Gunaratne has won the £30,000 Swansea University International Dylan Thomas prize for In Our Mad and Furious City.
  • The British-Sri Lankan writer, 35, who is also a human-rights documentary film-maker, was also longlisted for the 2018 Man Booker prize and won this year’s Jhalak prize for the novel.

ICMR head Balram Bhargava wins Dr Lee Jong-wook Prize for Public Health

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Professor Balram Bhargava recently won the 2019 Dr Lee Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health.
  • He was bestowed with the award at the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva.
  • He bagged the award for his achievements as a clinician, innovator, researcher and trainer.

Peter O’Neill Resigns as Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea

  • Prime Minister Peter O’Neill of Papua New Guinea resigned, as a flood of high-level defections from his governing party led him to step down after almost eight years in power.
  • He has handed over the leadership responsibility to Sir Julius Chan, who would now serve on the post for third term.

DRDO successfully test fires Akash-1S surface to air defence missile system

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired the Akash-1S surface to air defence missile system.
  • Akash-1S is a new version of the missile which is fitted with an indigenous seeker. In the last two days, this is the second successful test of the missile by the DRDO.
  • The Akash-1S is capable of striking down enemy fighter jets and drones very effectively.

Rahi Sarnobat, Saurabh Chaudhary Bag Gold Medals in ISSF world cup

  • Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in 10m Air Pistol Event at the ISS Shooting World Cup in Munich on May 27, 2019
  • This is the second gold of the season for the 17-year-old sensation. The first was secured in New Delhi tournament.
  • Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat also bagged the top podium spot in the 25 metre pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2019 in Munich.
  • With this,the total gold won by India has now reached three. The first gold was won by Apurvi Chandela in 10 m air rifle event.

Samiya, Maisnam clinch junior badminton titles

  • In the Yonex-Sunrise All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held from May 21-26, 2019 in Chennai, Manipur boy Maisnam Meiraba outplayed Aakash Yadav of Delhi 21-9, 12-7 to clinch the Under-19 Boys Singles title.
  • Telanganas No. 5 seed Samiya Imad Farooqui continued her meteoric rise as she clinched the U-19.

Nobel Prize-winning Physicist Murray Gell-Man Passes Away

  • Murray Gell-Mann, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who brought order to the universe by helping discover and classify subatomic particles, has died at the age of 89.
  • In 1969, Gell-Man was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics “for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions.”

Veteran Filmmaker and Action Choreographer Veeru Devgan Passes Away

  • Bollywood’s famous action director Veeru Devgan, father of actor Ajay Devgan, passed away. He was 85.
  • He has choreographed fight and action scenes in over 80 Hindi films and made his debut with 1999 filmHindustan Ki Kasam.

Kalpana Dash, Odisha’s first woman mountaineer, passes away

  • Kalpana (50) died after scaling the Mount Everest. She had complained breathlessness while descending from the Everest peak. She died near Balcony area.
  • The woman mountaineer from Odisha had first scaled Mt Everest in 2008.
