  • China has gifted warship frigate P625 to Sri Lanka
  • The frigate was commissioned into the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy as Tongling in 1994.
  • The warship was decommissioned in 2015 and has been gifted to Sri Lankan Navy after a refit.
  • The ‘P625’ frigate will be mainly used for offshore patrol, environment monitoring and anti-piracy combats

  • Cabinet has approved the extension of the term of Fifteenth Finance Commission up to 30th November 2019 and mandated the panel to suggest ways for allocation of non-lapsable funds for defence and internal security.
  • It will enable the Commission to examine various comparable estimates for financial projections in view of reforms and the new realities to finalise its recommendations for the period 2020-2025
  • The Fifteenth Finance Commission was, constituted by the President on 27th November, 2017, headed by N K Singh.
  •  It was to submit its report on the basis of its Terms of Reference by 30th October this year covering a period of five years commencing from 1st April, 2020

  • Union Cabinet has approved 1,600 crore rupees for Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh
  • Dibang Multipurpose Project (Dibang MPP) is envisaged as a storage based hydro-electric project with flood moderation as the key objective.
  • The Project is located on river Dibang, in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh. The project envisages construction of a 278 m high Concrete Gravity Dam
  • The project shall generate 2880MW (12x240MW) power to produce 11223MU of energy in a 90% dependable year.
  • This is the largest ever Hydro Electric Projects to be constructed in India. The dam is 278 metres high and will be the highest dam in India once completed

  • Google India’s ‘Internet Saathi’ programme aimed to empower rural women on how to use the Internet has now added two more states — Punjab and Odisha.
  • With this, the programme has now reached 2.6 lakh villages in 20 states.
  • Launched as a pilot project in 2015, along with Tata Trusts, ‘Internet Saathi’ programme focuses on educating women on how to use the Internet.
  • In Punjab, the programme will cover around 5,000 villages. In Odisha, it will cover over 16,000 villages.
