In Saudi Arabia, a landmark reform allowing women over the age of 21 to receive passports and travel abroad without permission from a male guardian has begun.

The reform comes after high-profile attempts by women to escape alleged guardianship abuse despite a string of reforms by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including a landmark decree last year that overturned the world’s only ban on women drivers.

Saudi women were also granted the right to officially register childbirth, marriage or divorce and to be recognized as a guardian to children who are minors – same as men.

Iran unveiled its new home-grown air defence system at a time of increased tensions with the United States.

Iranian officials have previously called Bavar-373 the Islamic republic’s first domestically produced long-range missile defence system.

Tehran began making Bavar — which means “believe” — after the purchase of Russia’s S-300 system was suspended in 2010 due to international sanctions.

The long-range Bavar-373 missile system is suited to Iran’s geography with a range of more than 200 kilometres (124 miles) … and competes with Russian and American systems such as S-300 and Patriot.

The President of India, Shri Ram NathKovind inaugurated the first World Youth conference on kindness at VigyanBhawan in New Delhi.

The president addressed the event celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on the theme ‘VasudhaivaKutumbakam: Gandhi for the Contemporary World’.

To impart empathy, compassion, mindfulness and critical enquiry to inspire, empower and enable youth to transform building a long-lasting peace in their communities and finding pathways to achieve Sustainable Development Goals(SDG).

The conference was organised by UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

In a bid to eliminate single-use plastic in the country, Indian Railways on Wednesday directed all units to enforce a ban on single-use plastic, with less than 50-micron thickness, from October 2 onwards in its premises and trains.

The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Development Corporation (IRCTC) will implement the return of plastic drinking water bottles as part of extended producer responsibility and 1,853 plastic bottle crushing machines will be installed at 360 major railway stations in the 1st  phase of this initiative.

It also urged all vendors and railway staffs across Indian Railways to use reusable bags to reduce plastic footprint.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a memorial in the honour of the victims of two Air India crashes at the foothills of the Mont Blanc mountain in France in which several Indians, including Homi J Bhabha, regarded as the father of India’s nuclear programme, were killed.

The memorial at Nid d’Aigle, at the foot of Mount Blanc, was dedicated to Bhabha and several other Indians who were among the passengers and crew of the two Air India planes that crashed in 1950 and 1966.

In order to provide quality housing to army personnel, Tata Realty & Housing and Indian Army signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The MoU would enable the personnel to immediately take over dwelling units in 13 ‘Ready to Move in’ projects of Tata Realty pan India spread over 10 cities including Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune among others at a discount ranging from 11-27 per cent.

This also heralds a new era for Army Welfare Housing Organization (AWHO), which has always endeavored to provide quality housing for Army personnel who are deployed in remote locations across the country.

AWHO will now facilitate acquisition of homes from reputed private builders at discounted rather than building them for the soldiers.

General insurance company Digit Insurance announced its first Bancassurance tie-up with Karur Vysya Bank.

Digit Insurance to provide Digit Insurance’s suite of products to its SMEs(Small and medium-sized enterprises) customers.

Digit Insurance’s products will now be available in KVB’s customers spread across 750 plus branches in India.

The product portfolio comprises Digit Insurance’s flagship health, car& Bike, accident, home content, critical illnesses, and particularly SME (Small and medium-sized enterprises) insurances, which is hugely underinsured in India.

Through this partnership, Digit Insurance will deepen the penetration of its product offers and enable more customers to access their risk solutions.

Globally, DBS has become the first bank to concurrently hold three global best bank awards. This was achieved after DBS was named “World’s Best Bank” by leading global financial publication Euromoney in its 2019 Awards for Excellence.

It follows the bank’s wins of Global Finance’s “Best Bank in the World” in August 2018 and The Banker’s “Bank of the Year – Global” in November 2018.

This is the first time an Asian-headquartered bank has been named “World’s Best Bank” by Euromoney since the award was launched in 1993.

Moody’s Investors Service has cut India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate to 6.2 per cent for calendar year 2019 against its earlier projection of 6.8 per cent.

The rating agency scaled down India’s economic growth to 6.7 per cent for 2020, a cut of another 0.6 percentage points.

Conservationist Vivek Menon, head of Delhi-based conservation non-profit, Wildlife Trust of India was awarded the prestigious Clark R Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Award for the year 2019 in Geneva.

Menon was presented the award by Ivonne Higuero, the secretary general of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The eighteenth meeting of Conference of Parties to CITES is currently being held at Geneva.

The Bavin award is instituted by the Animal Welfare Institute for wildlife law enforcement officers, law enforcement agencies, agency administrators, criminal investigators, forensic scientists, attorneys, informants, and others who have gone beyond the call of duty and demonstrated a commitment and dedication to combating wildlife crime

Russia has successfully carried out the launch of its first humanoid robot in space. The unmanned Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft took off for the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, carrying the humanoid robot Fedor to space alongside medical and food supplies for the human crew presently residing in the ISS. Fedor, whose name stands for Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research, is a Skybot F-850 humanoid that is roughly the size of an average adult, and is capable of emulating specific movements of the human body.

Vikram Rathour is set to become the new batting coach of India men’s cricket team after the All-India Senior Selection Committee of BCCI shortlisted the candidates for each criteria of support staff of Team India in Mumbai.

The five-member committee comprising MSK Prasad, Sarandeep Singh, Gagan Khoda and Jatin Paranjape and Devang Gandhi decided to shortlist Vikram Rathour ahead of Sanjay Bangar as the batting coach. Meanwhile, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar are to be retained as the bowling and fielding coaches.
