10) A train overtakes two persons who are walking in the same directions in which the train is going, at the rate of 2kmph and 4 kmph respectively and passed them completely in 9 and 10 seconds respectively. The length of the train is?

  1. 50 m
  2. 60 m
  3. 65 m
  4. 70 m
  5. None of these

Answers:

1) Answer b

4.5 km/hr = (4.5 x 5/18) m/sec = 5/4 m/sec = 1.25 m/sec, and
5.4 km/hr = (5.4 x 5/18) m/sec = 3/2 m/sec = 1.5 m/sec.
Let the speed of the train be x m/sec.
Then, (x – 1.25) x 8.4 = (x – 1.5) x 8.5
=> 8.4x – 10.5 = 8.5x – 12.75
=> 0.1x = 2.25
=> x = 22.5
Therefore Speed of the train = (22.5 x 18/5) km/hr = 81 km/hr.

2) Answer c

Relative speed = (40 – 20) km/hr = (20 x 5/18) m/sec = 50/9 m/sec.
Therefore Length of faster train = (50/9 x 5) m = 250/9 m = 27 7/9 m.

3) Answer a

Let the speeds of the two trains be x m/sec and y m/sec respectively.
Then, length of the first train = 27x metres,
and length of the second train = 17y metres.
(27x + 17y)/(x + y) = 23
27x + 17y = 23x + 23y
4x = 6y
x/y = 3/2.

4) Answer c

Speed of train relative to jogger = (45 – 9) km/hr = 36 km/hr.

= [36 x (5/18) m/sec

= 10 m/sec.

Distance to be covered = (240 + 120) m = 360 m.

Time taken = (360/10) sec = 36 sec

5) Answer c

L = S × T
L = 18 × 5/18 × 30
(in same direction Speed = first train – second train)
= 150m

6) Answer c

Relative speed = (60+ 90) km/hr

= [150 * (5/18)] m/sec

= (125/3) m/sec.

Distance covered = (350 + 200) m = 550 m

Required time = [550 x (3/125)] sec = 13.2 sec.
7) Answer c

In 50 minute Sangam nagri can cover 50 km.

So, the rest distance = 650 km, which will be jointly covered by both trains.

Time taken = 650/(60 + 70) = 5 h

Distance from Meerut = 5 * 70 = 350 km

8) Answer a

When distance is kept constant then speed and time are in inverse relations.

So if speed is S then

s/(s – 5) = 16/15 so we get

Speed = 80 kmph and

Distance = 60 km

9) Answer b

Relative speed = 50 – 40 = 10 kmph = 50 18 m/s

Time taken = Sum of length of the trains/Relative speed = (200 *18)/50 = 72 sec

10) Answer a

Let the speed and length of train be‘s’ and ‘l’ respectively.

Speed of one person =  2 km/hr = 2*(5/18) = 5/9 m/s

Speed of another person = 4 km/hr = 4*(5/18) = 10/9 m/s

So the equation as per the question becomes

(s – 5/9) = l/9 ——–1)

(s – 10/9) = l/10 ——2)

1) – 2) we get l = 50 m
