Indian Banks’ Advertising Expenditure Jumps 160% Over 5 Years

  • Indian banks have significantly increased their advertising and publicity expenditure, indicating a major strategic shift towards brand building and customer acquisition.
  • Over the last five years, 11 large-cap banks (public and private sector) reported a 2.5 times (160%) growth in ad spends.

India’s total demat accounts surpass 200 million, reaching 202.12 million in July 2025

  • The total number of demat accounts in India crossed the 200 million mark in July 2025, reaching 202.12 million, up from 199.14 million in June.
  • 98 million new demat accounts were added in July, marking the highest monthly increase in the last seven months.
  • Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) recorded a month-on-month increase of 2.47 million accounts, reaching 161.11 million in July.
  • National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) saw a rise of 0.51 million accounts, reaching a total of 41 million in July.

Securities and Exchange Board of India Plans Unified Access Portal for Verified Foreign Investors                         

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has proposed a single-window gateway for trusted foreign investors called SWAGAT-FISingle Window Automatic & Generalised Access for Trusted Foreign Investors.
  • The primary goal is to simplify regulatory compliance and boost foreign investment in India.
  • SWAGAT-FI will make India’s capital markets more accessible to a select group of foreign investors who are objectively verified as low-risk.
  • The initiative targets entities like government-owned funds, central banks, sovereign wealth funds, multilateral entities, and highly regulated public retail funds, which account for over 70% of foreign portfolio investors’ (FPI) assets under custody.
  • SWAGAT-FI aims to provide eligible investors a streamlined, single-window registration process for both FPIs and Foreign Venture Capital Investors (FVCIs), reducing paperwork, cost, and regulatory complexity.
  • Existing FPIs meeting SWAGAT-FI criteria will also be allowed to opt in for easier compliance.
  • A key feature is extending the registration continuance and KYC review period for these trusted investors from three years to ten years.

  • REPCO Bank presented a cheque of Rs 22.90 crore as dividend for 2024-25 to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on August 4, 2025.
  • REPCO Bank is a Government of India enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The bank posted a net profit of Rs 140 crore during FY 2024-25 and paid a 30% dividend, the highest in the history of the cooperative society.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and Reserve Bank of India Boost Rural Financial Literacy with 2,421 Financial Literacy Centres Established Across India

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have undertaken multiple interventions to promote financial literacy and awareness among the rural population, including microfinance borrowers.
  • NABARD provides financial support for conducting Financial and Digital Literacy Camps through rural bank branches and Financial Literacy Centres (FLCs) in areas with limited awareness.
  • The Centre for Financial Literacy (CFL) project, initiated by RBI in 2017, adopts community-led, innovative, and participatory approaches to financial literacy.
  • As of March 31, 2025, a total of 2,421 CFLs have been established across India, each covering an average of three blocks.
  • NABARD also sponsors Village Level Programmes (VLPs) with support from banks and State Rural Livelihoods Missions (SRLMs) to improve the interaction between bankers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
  • RBI has simplified the definition of microfinance loans and removed several quantitative restrictions on loans by NBFC-MFIs, such as limits on loan amounts and minimum tenure requirements.
  • Currently, all collateral-free loans to households with annual income up to ₹3,00,000 are classified as microfinance loans.
  • The rule requiring at least 50% of loans to be for income generation has been removed to allow credit for medical, education, and income smoothing needs.
  • RBI has enhanced borrower protection by capping monthly loan repayments at 50% of monthly income to prevent over-indebtedness, and mandates regulated recovery processes, including a grievance redressal mechanism for recovery complaints.
  • Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) like Sa-Dhan and Microfinance Industry Network (MFIN) play a crucial role in strengthening compliance among Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs), including NBFC-MFIs, and provide a platform for policy consultation.

  • Following the stake sale, One97 Communications’ shares declined by about 1.45% on NSE and 1.23% on BSE.
  • The stake was sold by Ant Group through its affiliate Antfin (Netherlands) Holding BV.
  • Ant Group, formerly known as Ant Financial, is an affiliate of the Chinese conglomerate Alibaba Group.

Rajasthan to Launch India’s First Drone-Based Artificial Rain Trial at Ramgarh Dam

  • Rajasthan will conduct India’s first drone-based artificial rain experiment at Ramgarh Dam, replacing traditional aeroplane-assisted cloud seeding with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
  • Around 60 drones will disperse special chemicals into rain-bearing clouds to stimulate droplet formation and potentially cause rainfall.
  • The initiative is a joint project between the state agriculture department and technology firm GenX AI, headquartered in the US and Bengaluru.

Indian Navy to Commission Advanced Stealth Frigates Udaygiri and Himgiri

  • The Indian Navy is set to commission two advanced frontline frigates, Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34), simultaneously on 26 August 2025 at Visakhapatnam.
  • This is the first time two major surface combatants from two prestigious Indian shipyardsMazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata—will be commissioned together.

Key Highlights :

  • Udaygiri is the second ship of the Project 17A stealth frigates and also the 100th ship designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
  • Both frigates are stealthy, versatile, and indigenous, displacing around 6,700 tons, about 5% larger than the predecessor Shivalik-class but with a sleeker form and reduced radar cross-section.
  • Powered by Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion, featuring diesel engines and gas turbines driving controllable-pitch propellers, managed through an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
  • Armed with supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, a 76 mm gun, 30 mm and 12.7 mm Close-in Weapon Systems, and Anti-submarine/Underwater weapons.
  • The construction involved an extensive industrial ecosystem with support from over 200 MSMEs, generating around 4,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs.
  • The commissioning reinforces the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance in ship design and construction, following other indigenous platforms commissioned in 2025 such as INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, INS Vaghsheer, INS Arnala, and INS Nistar.

  • Ashok Leyland will proceed with further steps like regulatory, shareholder, and other approvals for the merger.
  • The merger aims to strengthen the financial position with combined assets exceeding Rs 29,000 crore.
  • The merger supports Ashok Leyland’s plan for a public listing of Hinduja Leyland Finance via a reverse merger, enhancing shareholder value.
  • NDL Ventures has been registered as an NBFC with the RBI, a key step for merger completion.
  • Hinduja Leyland Finance continues to grow despite a slight delay in listing; its subsidiary, Hinduja Housing Finance, is the fourth-largest affordable housing finance company.

Adani Defence to Fully Acquire Indamer Technics via Subsidiary Partnership          

  • Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited. (ADSTL), through a partnership between its subsidiary Horizon Aero Solutions Ltd. and Prime Aero Services LLP, will acquire a 100% stake in Indamer Technics Private Ltd. (ITPL).
  • Horizon Aero Solutions is a 50-50 partnership between ADSTL and Prime Aero, which is owned by Prajay Patel.
  • ITPL is located in Nagpur’s MIHAN Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and operates a facility with 10 hangars and capacity for 15 aircraft bays.
  • The acquisition aims to provide comprehensive MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) services, including Lease Return Checks, Heavy C-Checks, Structural Repairs, and Aircraft Painting.
  • The facility holds key regulatory approvals from the DGCA (India) and the FAA (USA), among others.
  • This strategic move is intended to help position India as a global MRO hub and build an integrated aviation services ecosystem in the country.

  • Nelco will partner OneWeb India Communications to provide secure, low-latency LEO connectivity to customers.

  • Services will launch once OneWeb’s LEO commercial operations in India begin.

  • In the year 1990, the Left-Handers Club was established to promote research in lefthand usage and the evolution of new left-handed items.
  • This club also keeps members from all over the world in touch with new developments.
  • The Left-Handers Club launched International Lefthanders Day as an annual event on the 13th of August, 1992.
  • That day, lefthanders around the world can celebrate their uniqueness and create awareness in the public about the strength and weakness of being left-handed. Various events are included on this special day to aware of lefthanders experiences in everyday life.

World Organ Donation Day 2025: August 13

  • Every year World Organ Donation Day is celebrated on the 13th of August to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourage people to donate their organs after death.
  • This year, 2025, the theme for World Organ Donation Day is “Answering the Call”.

  • In 1954, the first successful organ donation took place in the United States.Ronald Lee Herrick donated his kidney to his twin brother Richard J. Herrick and he was the world’s first organ donor. Dr. Joseph Murray was the doctor who carried out this successful kidney transplantation.
  • The doctor was honored with Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for bringing advances in organ transplantation in the year 1990.
