National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to Build Centralised Digital Lending Platform to Boost Regional Rural Banks’ Competitiveness Against non-banking financial companies and microfinance institutions

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is developing a centralised digital lending platform for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to strengthen their competitiveness against non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs).
  • The initiative follows the One State-One RRB Policy, effective from 1 May 2025, which consolidated 43 RRBs into 28 banks.
  • The Centralised Digital Credit Infrastructure (CDCI) will digitise, automate, and streamline credit processing for various loan products.
  • RRBs were established in 1975 under an Ordinance (26 Sept 1975) and later formalised by the RRBs Act, 1976, to support the rural economy and supplement the Cooperative Credit Structure.
  • The shareholding pattern of RRBs is as follows: Government of India – 50%, State Government – 15%, and Sponsor Bank (PSB) – 35%.
  • Currently, 28 RRBs operate through 22,158 branches across 26 States and 3 Union Territories (Puducherry, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh).

Securities and Exchange Board of India Cuts Trading Lot Size for Privately Placed Infrastructure Investment Trusts to ₹25 Lakh to Boost Liquidity and Investor Participation

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has reduced the trading lot size for privately placed Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) on stock exchanges to ₹25 lakh from ₹1 crore (or ₹2 crore earlier), with the aim of enhancing liquidity and broadening investor participation.
  • This change forms part of the amendments to the SEBI (Infrastructure Investment Trusts) Regulations, 2014, which were based on the consultation paper of May 2025.
  • As of March 2024, India had 27 registered InvITs with total assets worth ₹7 lakh crore and 5 Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) with assets amounting to ₹2.25 lakh crore.
  • SEBI has mandated that REITs and InvITs must complete distributions to unitholders within 5 working days from the date of declaration.
  • REITs and InvITs have also been allowed to call a unitholders’ meeting with less than 21 days’ notice, providing greater operational flexibility.

ICICI Bank Extends Amazon Pay Co-Branded Credit Card Partnership for 7 More Years

  • ICICI Bank has renewed its partnership with Amazon Pay for the co-branded “Amazon Pay ICICI Credit Card” for another seven years.
  • The Amazon Pay ICICI Credit Card has over 5 million users, making it the largest co-branded credit card offering in India.
  • The partnership between ICICI Bank and Amazon Pay for this card was first launched in 2018.
  • As of July 2025, ICICI Bank has over 18 million credit cards in force, according to RBI data.
  • ICICI Bank is the third-largest credit card issuer in India after HDFC Bank and State Bank of India (SBI).
  • Axis Bank, the fourth-largest issuer, has a co-branded credit card partnership with Flipkart.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi Inaugurates 1st Green Hydrogen R&D Conference; Launches ₹100 Crore Start-up Innovation Fund

  • Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the 1st Annual Green Hydrogen Research and Development (R&D) Conference in New Delhi and launched a ₹100 crore Call for Proposals to support start-ups in hydrogen innovation.
  • The scheme provides up to ₹5 crore per project for pilot projects in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and utilisation technologies.
  • Around 25 start-ups showcased innovations including electrolyser manufacturing, AI-driven optimisation, and biological hydrogen solutions.

Key Highlights:

  • The initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, based on four pillars – Policy and Regulatory Framework, Demand Creation, R&D and Innovation, and Enabling Infrastructure.
  • 23 R&D projects have already been awarded under the Mission in areas like hydrogen production from biomass, hydrogen applications, and safety & integration, with IITs, IISERs, CSIR labs, and industry partners implementing them.
  • The second round of R&D proposals (budgetary outlay ₹400 crore) opened on 14 July 2025 and remains open till 15 September 2025.
  • India is advancing in green hydrogen pilots:
    • First port-based Green Hydrogen Pilot Project launched at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tamil Nadu.
    • Five steel sector projects testing hydrogen-based decarbonisation.
    • Hydrogen buses and refuelling stations operational in the transport sector.
    • Green ammonia auction achieved record low price of ₹49.75 per kg (vs ₹100.28 in 2024), with supplies to begin at Paradeep Phosphates, Odisha.
  • Enablers include: Green Hydrogen Standard and Certification Scheme aligned with 140+ international standards, sanctioning of five new testing facilities, certification of 5,600+ trainees, and regulatory waivers like transmission charge exemptions.
  • Hydrogen hubs being developed at Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin Ports to strengthen India’s export competitiveness.
  • Both large enterprises (NTPC, Reliance, IOCL) and start-ups/MSMEs are investing, creating a robust value chain and lakhs of new jobs.
  • Targets by 2030: 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, 125 GW new renewable capacity, ₹8 lakh crore investments, six lakh new jobs, and 50 million tonnes CO reduction annually.
  • The conference also featured a Start-up Expo with 25 companies, interactive sessions, and expert roundtables.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah Opens 5th Rajbhasha Sammelan in Gandhinagar

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 5th All India Rajbhasha Sammelan at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar on Hindi Day (14 September 2025).
  • The event witnessed the participation of over 7,000 Central Government officials, focusing on promoting Hindi alongside regional languages and strengthening linguistic coexistence.

Key Highlights:

  • Launched two initiatives:
    • Sarathi Platform – Digital platform to promote Hindi in official communication and training in Central Government services.
    • Hindi Shabd Sindhu Kosh – A comprehensive digital encyclopedia of Hindi, targeted to be the world’s largest linguistic knowledge base by 2029, with standardised terminology for technical and scientific fields.
  • Sammelan objectives: coordination between Hindi & regional languages, multilingual administration, expansion of Hindi’s technical vocabulary, and review of Official Language policies.
  • Hindi Diwas is being celebrated across the country today.
  • It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the country.

  • Tirumala Hills: Home to the Eparchaean Unconformity, a visible geological boundary where rocks over 1.6 billion years old meet younger sedimentary layers; considered one of the world’s oldest unconformities.

  • India will host the 89th International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting from 15 to 19 September 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • The event will bring together 2,000+ global experts from 100+ countries to deliberate on electrotechnical standards for a sustainable, all-electric, and connected future.
  • This is the fourth time India is hosting the IEC General Meeting, after 1960, 1997, and 2013.

INS Trikand, Indian Navy Stealth Frigate, Arrives at Salamis Bay, Greece During Mediterranean Deployment

  • INS Trikand, a stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, called at Salamis Bay, Greece on 13 September 2025 during its deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The visit includes the maiden bilateral maritime exercise between India and Greece, aimed at enhancing interoperability, refining tactical skills, and strengthening operational synergy.
  • During the port call, activities include interactions with senior military officials, planning discussions, cross deck visits, and cultural exchanges to boost bilateral and multilateral cooperation and people-to-people connect.
  • The visit will be followed by the sea phase of the exercise.
  • After completion of the bilateral exercise, INS Trikand will proceed to the next phase of deployment in the region.

Indian Navy Launches Third Diving Support Craft ‘DSC A 22’ in Kolkata

  • The Indian Navy launched ‘DSC A 22’, the third ship of the 05 x Diving Support Craft (DSC) project, on 12 September 2025 at Titagarh, Kolkata (West Bengal).
  • The DSC project is being built by M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), Kolkata for the Indian Navy.
  • The contract for building 05 x DSCs was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and TRSL on 12 February 2021.
  • These DSC ships are designed to undertake diving operations in coastal waters and are fitted with state-of-the-art diving equipment.
  • The ships are catamaran hull vessels with a displacement of approximately 380 tons.
  • They are indigenously designed and built under the Naval Rules and Regulations of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
  • Hydrodynamic analysis/model testing was carried out at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam during the design stage.
  • The DSC ships are flag bearers of the Make in India initiative of the Government of India (GoI)/Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Ajay Kumar Srivastava’s Term as Indian Overseas Bank Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Extended by Govt Until October 2027

  • The Central Government has approved the extension of Ajay Kumar Srivastava’s tenure as Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB).
  • His tenure has been extended for about 21 months, starting January 01, 2026.
  • The extension is valid till October 08, 2027 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Srivastava’s current term ends on December 31, 2025, and the extension ensures completion of his 10-year tenure as Whole-Time Director.
  • Ajay Kumar Srivastava has been serving as MD & CEO of IOB since January 01, 2023.
  • Prior to this, he was Executive Director at IOB from 2017.

Ex-Diplomat Preeti Saran Elected Chair of UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

  • Former diplomat Preeti Saran has been elected as Chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).
  • The CESCR is a UN body responsible for overseeing the implementation of international covenants on economic and social rights.
  • The CESCR operates under the administrative control of the UN Human Rights Commission.
  • Preeti Saran’s election reflects recognition of India’s contribution and leadership in promoting human rights globally.
  • She had a 36-year career in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), serving in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
  • She retired as Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), serving from March 2016 to September 2018.

  • The Chiplet approach uses small integrated circuits as building blocks for larger chips, addressing bottlenecks in traditional transistor scaling.
  • The Indian Semiconductor Market is valued at $45–50 billion in 2024–25 and is projected to reach $100–110 billion by 2030.
  • Growth of the semiconductor sector is supported by the ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Centre Approves Five Indian Firms to Produce and Market AdFalciVax, Nation’s First Indigenous Multi-Stage Malaria Vaccine

  • The Union Government has granted licences to five Indian firms to manufacture and commercialise AdFalciVax, India’s first indigenous multi-stage malaria vaccine.
  • AdFalciVax, developed by ICMR, is a recombinant chimeric multi-stage malaria vaccine designed to block infection and transmission of Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest malaria parasite.
  • The licensed firms are Indian Immunologicals Limited, Techinvention Lifecare Pvt Ltd, Panacea Biotec Ltd, Biological E Ltd, and Zydus Lifesciences.
  • Malaria remains a major public health challenge in India, contributing to 1.4% of global malaria cases and 0.9% of global deaths.
  • India accounts for 66% of Southeast Asia’s malaria cases, highlighting the vaccine’s public health significance.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to Manufacture Small Satellite Launch Vehicle Following Technology Transfer Agreement

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL),Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) Technology Transfer Agreement in Bengaluru.
  • Under the contract, HAL will absorb the SSLV technology in the first 2 years, followed by a 10-year production phase.
  • The SSLV is a three-stage launch vehicle designed to place satellites under 500 kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • It can be launched from Sriharikota (inclined orbits) and the upcoming Kulasekarapattinam launch site (polar orbits).
  • The agreement grants HAL a non-exclusive, non-transferable license covering design, manufacturing, quality control, integration, launch operations, post-flight analysis, along with training and support.

PhonePe Signs MoU with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to Enable Digital Udyam Assist Registration

  • Fintech major PhonePe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to provide an end-to-end digital solution through the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP).
  • The initiative aims to formalise Informal Micro Enterprises (IMEs) by enabling seamless digital-first Udyam Assist registration, helping them access government schemes, credit facilities, and the digital payments ecosystem.

History

  • In 1985, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer was adopted and signed by 28 countries.
  • On 16th September 1987 the Montreal Protocol, on the substance that depletes the ozone layer was signed by the United Nations and Other Nations.
  • The Montreal Protocol was first implemented on 1 January 1989.
  • The purpose of the Montreal Protocol is to reduce the production of a substance that causes the depletion of the ozone layer.
  • In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided to organize World Ozone Day on the 16th of September.
