India’s Retail Inflation Rises to 2.07% in August, Stays Within Reserve Bank of India’s 4% Target
- India’s retail inflation rose to 2.07% in August 2025, up 46 basis points from 1.61% in July, remaining within Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) target of 4%.
- Rural inflation increased to 1.69%, while urban inflation rose to 2.47% in August 2025.
- Food and beverages constitute the largest share in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 86%, followed by Housing – 10.07%, Fuel and Light – 6.84%, Clothing and Footwear – 6.53%, Pan, Tobacco & Intoxicants – 2.38%, and Miscellaneous – 28.32%.
- The CPI is currently calculated using 2012 as the base year.
- There are four types of CPI:
- CPI for Industrial Workers (IW)
- CPI for Agricultural Labourers (AL)
- CPI for Rural Labourers (RL)
- CPI (Rural/Urban/Combined)
- The first three CPIs are compiled by the Labour Bureau, Ministry of Labour and Employment, while the fourth is compiled by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

India’s Unemployment Rate Declines to 5.1% in August 2025
- According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), India’s overall unemployment rate (15+ years) fell to 5.1% in August 2025, the lowest in three months.
- The unemployment rate declined for the second consecutive month: 5.6% in June → 5.2% in July → 5.1% in August.
Key Highlights
- Male unemployment dropped to a five-month low of 5.0%; urban male unemployment fell from 6.6% in July to 5.9% in August, while rural male unemployment declined to 4.5%, the lowest in five months.
- Rural unemployment rate improved from 5.1% in May to 4.3% in August, driven by agricultural activities and rural job opportunities.
- Female participation increased notably:
- Worker Population Ratio (WPR – Female): 30.2% in June → 32.0% in August; rural female WPR: 33.6% → 35.9%; urban female WPR: 22.9% → 23.8%.
- Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR – Female): 32.0% in June → 33.7% in August; rural female LFPR: 35.2% → 37.4%; urban female LFPR: 25.2% → 26.1%.
- Overall WPR (all genders) improved from 51.2% in June to 52.2% in August; overall LFPR rose from 54.2% in June to 55% in August.
- The PLFS August 2025 estimates are based on a sample survey covering 5,92,734 individuals (3,76,839 rural and 2,15,895 urban).
- The decline signals labour market recovery, with rural employment and rising female workforce participation acting as key drivers, strengthening inclusivity and long-term growth prospects.

India Includes 7 New Sites in United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Tentative World Heritage List, Taking Total to 69
- Seven new sites from India have been added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, taking the total to 69 properties under consideration.
- The Tentative List now includes 49 cultural sites, 17 natural sites, and 3 mixed sites.
- The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO announced the update, highlighting India’s commitment to preservation and conservation of cultural heritage.
- Addition to the Tentative List is a mandatory requirement before any site can be inscribed as a World Heritage Site.
- The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) played a key role in compiling the submissions.
7 New Sites Added (Natural Category):
- Deccan Traps (Panchgani & Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra) – volcanic basalt formations.
- St Mary’s Island Cluster (Udupi, Karnataka) – columnar basalt rocks.

Oman to Establish Middle East’s First Green Ship Recycling Facility Under 2050 Net-Zero Plan
- Oman will build the Middle East’s first integrated green ship recycling facility as part of its 2050 net-zero emissions goals.
- The facility will dismantle and recycle over 70 ships annually and produce 2 million tonnes of low-carbon steel in its first phase.
- The project will comply with the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention on safe and sustainable ship recycling.
- The plant will be established at Khatmat Malaha, North Batinah, in partnership with Green Wheel Recycling Middle East.
- The project will supply millions of tonnes of low-carbon steel to Oman’s iron and steel sector, boosting non-oil GDP.
- Oman also aims to be the first Gulf country to provide electricity and green fuel to ships while docked, supporting sustainable maritime transport.

- Justice M Sundar was sworn in as the 10th Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court on September 15, 2025.
- The oath of office was administered by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan.
- Justice Sundar was appointed as Chief Justice on September 13, 2025, after the superannuation of Justice Kempaiah Somashekar.
- The swearing-in ceremony was attended by political leaders, high court judges, senior state officials, and bar association representatives.
- Before this appointment, Justice Sundar served as a judge of the Madras High Court.
Amit Khare Named Secretary to Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan
- The Government of India appointed Amit Khare as Secretary to Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on 14 September 2025.
- Amit Khare has been serving as Advisor to the Prime Minister since 12 October 2021, focusing on social sector matters in the PMO.

India and International Labour Organisation Sign MoU on International Reference Classification of Occupations
- Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, virtually attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of India and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Kalakshetra Stalwart Alladi Sarada Passed away
- Sarada Hoffman (Alladi Sarada), also known as Chinna Sarada or Sarada teacher, passed away on 14 September 2025 in California at the age of 96.
- She was born on 15 June 1929 at the Theosophical Society campus, Adyar (Chennai).
- She was a renowned Bharatanatyam exponent and a pillar of the Kalakshetra Foundation.
- She played a key role in codifying and standardising the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam under the guidance of Rukmini Devi Arundale.
- Some of her prominent disciples include Yamini Krishnamurthy, C.V. Chandrasekhar, V.P. Dhananjayan & Shanta Dhananjayan, and later alumni like Narendra, Sheejit Krishna, P.T. Narendran, Shijit Nambiar/Parvathi.
Awards & Honors :
- She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996 (one of India’s highest honours in the arts).
- She was the first recipient of the Rukmini Devi Medal for Excellence in the Arts, instituted by the Centre for Contemporary Culture, New Delhi.

- World Bamboo Day was recognized by the World Bamboo Organization in the year of 2009.
- World Bamboo Day was founded by Kamesh Salam who was the former president of the World Bamboo Organization.
- The World Bamboo Organization Headquarters was located in Antwerp, Belgium.
- The 8th World Bamboo Congress was held in Bangkok on 18 September 2009.
- So on this day, the World Bamboo Organization declared that every year the 18th of September is observed as World Bamboo Day.
- The World Bamboo Congress organized this day in order to achieve the protection of natural resources and to promote new cultivation of Bamboo for new industries in regions around the world.
