Government keeps small savings scheme interest rates unchanged for seventh straight quarter starting October 2025

  • The Government of India has kept interest rates unchanged for various small savings schemes, including Public Provident Fund (PPF) and National Savings Certificate (NSC), for the seventh consecutive quarter beginning October 1, 2025.

Key Highlights :

  • The Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme will continue to offer an interest rate of 8.2%, while a three-year term deposit will earn 7.1%.
  • The Public Provident Fund (PPF) interest rate remains unchanged at 7.1%, and post office savings deposits will continue at 4%.
  • The Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) will offer 7.5% interest with a maturity period of 115 months.
  • The National Savings Certificate (NSC) will continue to offer 7.7% interest for the October–December 2025 quarter.
  • The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) will provide 8.2% interest, ensuring regular income for retirees.
  • The Monthly Income Scheme will earn 7.4% for investors during the third quarter of FY 2025-26.
  • The PPF interest rate is reviewed quarterly by the Ministry of Finance and remains linked to the 10-year G-Sec yield plus a 25 basis points spread as per the Shyamala Gopinath Committee
  • PPF deposits can range from a minimum of ₹500 to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, and the scheme enjoys Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status.
  • The PPF account matures after 15 years, with options for withdrawal or extension, and interest earned is fully tax-free under the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • Accounts not receiving a minimum deposit of ₹500 in a financial year are discontinued but can be reactivated by paying a default fee of ₹50 per inactive year.
  • The interest on PPF is calculated monthly and credited annually at the end of each financial year.
  • In case of the death of the account holder, the nominee or legal heir can claim the amount, but further deposits are not permitted.

Reserve Bank of India data shows industrial credit growth moderating to 6.5% in August 2025

  • According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, bank credit to industry grew at a slower pace of 6.5% in August 2025, compared to 9.7% in the same period last year.
  • The RBI released data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for August 2025, collected from 41 select Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs), which account for about 95% of total non-food credit.
  • On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, non-food bank credit grew 9.9% as of the fortnight ended August 22, 2025, compared to 13.6% in the previous year.
  • Credit to agriculture and allied activities recorded an annual growth of 7.6%, down from 17.7% in the same period last year.

Securities and Exchange Board of India extends deadline for full rollout of retail algorithmic trading framework

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has extended the timeline for full implementation of its framework for safer retail participation in algorithmic (Algo) trading, initially mandated under the February 2025 circular.
  • Stock brokers ready with systems may begin implementation of the retail algo framework from October 1, 2025, while others have been given a glide path for compliance.
  • Full registration of API-based retail algo products must be completed by November 30, 2025, as per SEBI’s revised schedule.
  • To ensure readiness, brokers must participate in at least one mock trading session by January 3, 2026.
  • Brokers failing to meet deadlines will be barred from onboarding new retail clients for API-based algo trading starting January 5, 2026.
  • These measures are part of SEBI’s efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight, transparency, and risk control in retail algorithmic trading.

Bandhan Bank integrated with NPCI Bharat BillPay’s Bharat Connect platform

  • NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited. (NBBL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has announced the integration of Bandhan Bank on its Bharat Connect
  • This integration allows Bandhan Bank customers to repay overdue EMIs across multiple loan categories such as personal loans, auto loans, and two-wheeler loans.
  • Customers can repay EMIs digitally through Bandhan Bank’s mobile app (mBandhan), Retail Internet Banking (RIB), or via over 700 apps and websites powered by Bharat Connect.
  • The Bharat Connect integration by NBBL expands the digital repayment ecosystem, enabling convenient and timely loan payments.

India’s outward remittances under Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme fall 10.9% YoY to $2.45 billion in July 2025

  • Outward remittances under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) declined 10.9% year-on-year (YoY) in July 2025, amounting to $2.45 billion.
  • According to RBI data, remittances for travel stood at $1.4 billion in July 2025, down from $1.6 billion last year, marking a 13% decline.
  • Remittances for studies abroad fell 16% to $0.22 billion in July 2025, compared to $0.27 billion in July 2024.
  • Total outward remittances for April–July 2025 were $6.9 billion, showing a 28% decline from the same period in 2024.

Key Highlights :

  • The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) allows resident individuals to remit up to USD 2,50,000 per financial year for permissible current or capital account transactions like education, travel, and investments abroad.
  • The LRS was introduced on February 4, 2004, with an initial limit of USD 25,000, and has been revised upward over time based on macroeconomic conditions.
  • Under LRS, minors can also remit funds, but the declaration form must be countersigned by their natural guardian.
  • The scheme excludes entities such as corporates, partnership firms, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and trusts.
  • Prohibited remittances include those for lottery tickets, sweepstakes, margins, trading in foreign exchange abroad, or investments in FCCBs of Indian companies in overseas secondary markets.
  • Remittances are not allowed to FATF “non-cooperative” countries or terror-linked entities.
  • Residents using LRS can retain and reinvest income earned from overseas investments.
  • Unused or unspent foreign exchange must be repatriated within 180 days, unless reinvested abroad.
  • PAN is mandatory for all LRS transactions, and there is no limit on frequency, provided the total annual cap of USD 2,50,000 is not exceeded.
  • Remittances can be made in any freely convertible currency, not limited to USD.
  • Family members can combine remittances if each complies with LRS terms, but clubbing is not permitted for capital account transactions, unless they are co-owners.
  • Residents not permanently in India may remit their net salary, but for other income beyond USD 2,50,000, RBI approval is required.

Reserve Bank of India fines Indian Overseas Bank ₹31.8 lakh for violations in Priority Sector Lending norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of ₹31.8 lakh on Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) for non-compliance with directions related to Priority Sector Lending (PSL) – Targets and Classification.
  • The penalty was imposed after supervisory findings revealed lapses and a show-cause notice was issued to the bank.
  • RBI clarified that the action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and does not affect the validity of any transaction or agreement between the bank and its customers.

Artificial Intelligence could boost global trade by nearly 40% by 2040 with supportive policies, says 2025 World Trade Report

  • Paytm Money has partnered with JioBlackRock to launch India’s first Systematic Active Equity (SAE) fund aimed at retail investors, marking a major innovation in the mutual fund industry.
  • The JioBlackRock Flexi Cap Fund is available exclusively on the Paytm Money app, with the New Fund Offer (NFO) open from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

  • With a budget outlay of ₹60,000 crore, the scheme aims to modernize 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across India to make them industry-ready, addressing the skill gap and enhancing employability.
  • The initiative aligns with the national vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047”, focusing on creating a skilled, innovation-driven workforce to meet global industry demands.

About PM SETU Scheme (Skill Enhancement and Technical Upgradation):

  • The scheme seeks to revamp India’s vocational training ecosystem by transforming ITIs into modern, aspirational, and industry-integrated institutions.
  • Key focus areas:
    • Modernizing infrastructure and curriculum to match global standards.
    • Promoting industry partnerships for practical learning.

    Each cluster will specialize in key industrial domains such as manufacturing, IT, electrical engineering, and automotive technology.

India’s First Cooperative Multi-Feed Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant Inaugurated in Maharashtra

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah inaugurated India’s first cooperative multi-feed Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Kopargaon, Ahilyanagar district, Maharashtra.
  • The event was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, and Union Minister of State for Cooperation Shri Murlidhar Mohol.
  • The CBG plant has been established at the Maharshi Shankarrao Kolhe Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana.

  • Shri Amit Shah announced that the Government of India will support 15 cooperative sugar mills through the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) to establish CBG and potash granule production units.
  • The CBG plant, with an investment of ₹55 crore, will produce 12 tonnes of CBG and 75 tonnes of potash per day from jaggery and molasses, reducing India’s dependence on imports and promoting Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) on several agricultural items such as tractors, sprinklers, drip irrigation systems, and organic pesticides has been reduced to 5%, benefiting millions of farmers.

  • Singapore has reportedly renamed an island as “Zubeen Garg Island” on Google Maps in honour of late Assamese singer, composer, and actor Zubeen Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 following a scuba diving accident.
  • Zubeen Garg died during a yacht outing in Singapore, after facing breathing difficulties while swimming; the preliminary death certificate cited drowning as the cause of death.
  • The renaming of the island is a symbolic tribute, reflecting Zubeen Garg’s global influence and enduring cultural legacy beyond India.
  • Zubeen Garg began singing at the age of three and released his debut Assamese album “Anamika” in 1992.
  • He delivered several Assamese hits, including Maya, Zubeenor Gaan, Xabda, Pakhi, Shishu, and Jantra.
  • In Bollywood, he rose to prominence with songs in films like Dil Se, Vaastav, Fiza, Asoka, Kaante, Gangster, and Krrish 3.

  • The Sea Phase will feature complex maritime operational drills focusing on anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, along with flying operations and seamanship evolutions.
  • Both navies are deploying frontline assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and air assets (both integral and shore-based).

  • The two-day event will involve participation from central ministries, coastal state governments, major ports, oil handling agencies, and maritime organizations, ensuring wide inter-agency collaboration.
  • Over 100 national delegates and 40 foreign observers from 32 countries will attend, showcasing the international significance of India’s efforts in marine pollution response.
  • The biennial flagship exercise aims to evaluate and enhance national preparedness to respond to marine oil spill incidents and test inter-agency coordination under the NOSDCP framework.

Indigenously Built Fast Patrol Vessel Indian Coast Guard Ship Akshar Commissioned into Indian Coast Guard

  • Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Akshar, the second in a series of eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), was commissioned at Karaikal, Puducherry on October 4, 2025.
  • The 51-metre-long vessel was designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), reflecting the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
  • The ship has over 60% indigenous content, showcasing India’s growing maritime self-reliance and technological capability.

Key Highlights :

  • ICGS Akshar displaces approx. 320 tons and is propelled by two 3,000 KW diesel engines, enabling a maximum speed of 27 knots and an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles at economical speed.
  • It is fitted with indigenously developed Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) and gearboxes, providing superior maneuverability, operational flexibility, and enhanced performance at sea.
  • The vessel’s weaponry includes a 30 mm CRN 91 gun and two 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCG), both integrated with fire-control systems for improved accuracy.
  • It is equipped with advanced systems such as an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and Automated Power Management System (APMS), enhancing automation and operational efficiency.
  • ICGS Akshar will be based at Karaikal, Puducherry, under the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) through Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 13.
  • The name ‘Akshar’ meaning ‘imperishable’, symbolises the ICG’s steadfast resolve and commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and clean seas.
