India Exports First Consignment of Fortified Rice Kernel to Costa Rica
- India has achieved a major milestone by exporting its first-ever consignment of Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) to Costa Rica, marking a new era in nutrition-based agricultural exports.
- The 12-metric tonne shipment originated from Chhattisgarh and was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Key Highlights
- This initiative aligns with India’s national mission Kuposhan Mukt Bharat (Malnutrition-Free India) and contributes to global efforts to fight micronutrient deficiency.
- Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) is made by blending rice flour with essential micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, followed by an extrusion process that reshapes it to resemble normal rice grains. It is then mixed with regular rice at a fixed ratio to enhance nutritional value.
- Fortified rice is already distributed domestically through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) under the Poshan Abhiyan.
- Chhattisgarh, known as the “Rice Bowl of India,” has emerged as a leading player in fortified rice production and export, thanks to the coordinated efforts of farmers, millers, exporters, and The Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREA-CG).
- The export marks a strategic advancement for India by:
- Promoting nutrition-oriented trade and positioning India as a global food security contributor.
- Enhancing foreign exchange earnings through value-added agricultural products.
- Integrating public health goals with international trade objectives.
- For Chhattisgarh, this milestone:
- Encourages investment in fortification technology and processing infrastructure.
- Creates new income opportunities for local producers.
- Strengthens its position as a hub for value-added agri exports.
India to Receive Eight More Cheetahs from Botswana under Project Cheetah
- India will welcome eight more cheetahs from Botswana by the third week of December 2025, marking another major step in Project Cheetah, India’s initiative to reintroduce the species to its natural range after being declared extinct in 1952.
- The cheetahs are currently in quarantine in Botswana and will be shifted to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where they will be kept under observation before release.
Key Highlights
- Project Cheetah is the world’s first intercontinental large carnivore translocation project, launched to restore cheetahs in India’s grassland ecosystems through collaboration with Namibia and South Africa.
- Since its launch, India has received cheetahs from Namibia (2022) and South Africa (2023). The total cheetah population now stands at 27, which includes 16 cubs born in India.
- The species has been successfully reintroduced to Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, and efforts are underway to expand to Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve to prevent overcrowding and improve survival rates.
- The upcoming batch from Botswana will arrive in two phases, and after reaching India, the animals will undergo 2–3 months of quarantine before being released into the wild.
- The initiative aims to improve genetic diversity and build a stable population of cheetahs across suitable Indian habitats.
- Despite its achievements, Project Cheetah faces several challenges:
- Mortality concerns: Nine adult cheetahs and ten cubs have died so far.
- Climatic and biological mismatch: Cheetahs from the Southern Hemisphere face differences in climate and daylight patterns in India.
- Ecological debate: Conservationists highlight ecological differences between African and Indian landscapes that may affect adaptability.
- The government, however, remains optimistic about the project’s long-term potential, citing successful local births, strengthening habitat infrastructure, and international collaboration as signs of progress.

University of California Scientists Discover New Trapdoor Spider Species “Aptostichus ramirezae” in California’s Coastal Dunes
- Scientists from the University of California, Davis have discovered a new species of trapdoor spider named “Aptostichus ramirezae” in California’s coastal dunes, previously mistaken for its close relative “Aptostichus simus.”
- The discovery was published in the journal Ecology and Evolution after a detailed genetic analysis confirmed distinct genomic differences between the two species.
- The new species was named after arachnologist Martina Giselle Ramirez for her contributions to spider genetics and mentorship.
- Trapdoor spiders, relatives of tarantulas, live in silk-lined burrows with camouflaged trapdoors, using surface vibrations to capture prey while remaining concealed from predators.
- The species thrives along the California coastline from Monterey to Baja California, making it one of only four known trapdoor spider species in the region.
- Aptostichus ramirezae has a broader range, whereas Aptostichus simus is mostly found around San Diego.
- Both species face serious threats from habitat loss, urbanisation, erosion, wildfires, and rising sea levels, posing risks to their long-term survival.
- Because these spiders rarely leave their burrows, they have low mobility and cannot easily relocate when habitats deteriorate.
