- The growth in deposits is supported by Direct Benefit Transfers (DBTs), various government welfare schemes, and an increase in account activity due to reactivation drives.
- To address inactive accounts, the Department of Financial Services (DFS) launched a Financial Inclusion Saturation Programme (July–September 2025) to promote enrollment under PMJDY, PMJJBY, PMSBY, and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), and to re-verify KYC for dormant accounts.

- The scheme continues to serve as a cornerstone of inclusive growth, ensuring that almost 90% of Indian households now have a bank account.

- Eligibility: Indian nationals aged 18–59 years can apply; minors above 10 years can open accounts with guardian supervision.

- Zero-balance account feature allows individuals to open accounts without maintaining a minimum balance, though chequebook facility requires meeting balance criteria.
- Account holders receive a RuPay debit card that can be used at ATMs for cash withdrawals.

India’s Richest 1% Boost Wealth by 62% Since 2000, Says G20 Report
- India’s richest 1% expanded their wealth by 62% between 2000 and 2023, according to a G20 report commissioned by the South African Presidency.
- The study, led by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, warned that global inequality has reached “emergency” levels, threatening democracy, economic stability, and climate progress.
Key Highlights :
- The top 1% globally captured 41% of all new wealth created between 2000 and 2024, while the bottom 50% received only 1%, highlighting a sharp wealth disparity.
- The report noted that inter-country inequality has declined due to rising incomes in populous nations like India and China, reducing the GDP share of high-income countries.
- In India, the top 1% grew their wealth share by 62%, compared to 54% in China, placing India among countries with the steepest rise in wealth concentration.
- The report emphasized that “extreme inequality is a choice”, not an inevitability, and can be reversed with strong political will and global cooperation through the G20 framework.
- It proposed establishing an International Panel on Inequality (IPI), modelled after the IPCC, to monitor global inequality trends and guide policymaking.
- Since 2020, global poverty reduction has nearly stalled, with 3 billion people facing food insecurity, an increase of 335 million since 2019.
- Half of the world’s population lacks access to essential health services, and 1.3 billion people are impoverished by healthcare expenses.
- In India, the top 1% hold around 27% of total national wealth, nearly seven times more than the bottom 50%, showing severe inequality.
- Note : South Africa assumes the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2024 through to November 2025, approximately five years before the deadline of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda.

- The total estimated investment potential exceeds USD 150 billion, with the capacity to create around 2 lakh new jobs.
- The projects together hold a CO₂ abatement potential of 160–175 million tonnes per year, supporting India’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and positioning it as a major clean manufacturing hub globally.
- The chemicals sector dominates with nearly 80% of the total projects, including around 50 clean ammonia and methanol initiatives, capable of producing 30–35 million tonnes of clean chemicals annually.
- The steel sector has four major projects focusing on hydrogen-based iron reduction and carbon capture technologies.
- Sectors like cement, aluminium, and aviation are piloting low-emission fuels, clinker substitutes, and clean propulsion technologies, though these are still in early stages.
- The clean industrial projects are concentrated across seven key states—Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu—which provide strong policy support, infrastructure, and renewable energy access.

- Trust in AI systems
- People-first approach
- Innovation over restraint
- Fairness and equity
- Accountability
- Understandable by design
- Safety, resilience, and sustainability

- Two key mechanisms proposed under the framework include:
-
- AI Risk Assessment Framework – tailored to assess real-world harm, especially in sensitive applications.
- National AI Incident Database – to record, analyse, and track AI-related incidents through a federated data network.
- The guidelines encourage the use of regulatory sandboxes for safe testing of innovative AI solutions and require organisations to offer grievance redressal mechanisms under the Grievance Appellate Committee process.
- To address deepfakes and copyright issues, MeitY has proposed amendments to the IT Rules, requiring disclosure of AI-generated content and mandating platforms to deploy verification tools.
-
- Copyright laws will also be reviewed to enable AI model training while maintaining legal and ethical standards.
- The guidelines were developed through consultations with over 2,500 stakeholders, including IIT-Madras, think tanks, industry leaders, and government agencies.
-
- The drafting sub-committee was chaired by Professor Balaraman Ravindran (IIT-Madras), under the guidance of Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
