International Monetary Fund Rates India’s National Accounts Statistics ‘C’ Citing Methodological Shortcomings
- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has graded India’s national accounts statistics as ‘C’, the second-lowest grade, indicating methodological shortcomings that hamper economic surveillance.
- India’s national accounts data include key indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross Value Added (GVA).
Key Highlights :
- The IMF assessment highlights that data are timely and sufficiently frequent but affected by outdated methodologies, including the 2011-12 base year and limited use of producer price indices.
- India uses the income approach to estimate GDP, while also publishing expenditure-based estimates, leading to sizable discrepancies between the two approaches.
- Discrepancies in GDP estimates are largely due to differences in data sources, coverage of the informal sector, and expenditure mapping.
- The IMF noted the absence of seasonally adjusted quarterly data and recommended improvements in statistical techniques.
- India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) received a ‘B’ grade, with issues in the outdated consumption basket and weights set in 2011-12.
- Other government data categories, including government finance statistics, external sector statistics, monetary and financial statistics, and inter-sectoral consistency, also received ‘B’ grades.
- The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is working on updating GDP and CPI base years and methodology, with the new series expected by early or mid-2026.
- The IMF review is particularly significant as India is set to release Q2 FY29 national accounts data on 28 November 2028.
- Key IMF concerns include base-year relevance, statistical techniques, and discrepancies across GDP measurement approaches, affecting data reliability for policy and surveillance.

- Cyclone formation in the Bay of Bengal is favoured by high sea surface temperatures, low vertical wind shear, warm-water layers from major rivers, and funnel-shaped geography, making the region produce ~75% of North Indian Ocean cyclones.
- Cyclone Ditwah is classified as a tropical cyclone, and the WMO defines ‘tropical cyclone’ as a storm with minimum 63 km/h gale-force winds.
- Cyclones involve low-pressure atmospheric disturbances with winds circulating anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Cyclone Ditwah exited Sri Lanka heading toward South India, but indirect impacts such as strong winds and rainfall continue across the region (the system weakened into a deep depression near the coast).
