1) Answer: A

Let the speed of the boat be x kmph

Speed of stream = 1.5 kmph

Downstream speed = x+1.5

Upstream speed= x-1.5

(x+1.5) + (x-1.5) = 9

2x = 9

x = 4.5kmph

Downstream distance = 3 * (4.5+1.5) = 6*3 = 18 km

Upstream distance = 6 *(4.5-1.5) = 6 *3 = 18 km

Total distance = 18+18 = 36 km


2) Answer: A

Speed of stream =6 kmph

Speed of boat = x kmph

75/(x+6) = 5

75 = 5x+30

5x = 45

x= 9 kmph

Required time = 75/(9-6) = 75/3= 25 hours


3) Answer: D

Speed of boat = 4y

Speed of current = 4y * 25/100 = y

150/(4y – y) = x

150/3y = x

xy = 50

175/(4y + y) = (x – 3)

175/5y = (x – 3)

35 = xy – 3y

y = 5

Downstream speed = 5 * 5 = 25 kmph

Boat speed = 4x

Water speed = 3x

Downstream speed = 4x+3x = 7x

Upstream speed = 4x – 3x = x

According to the question,

70/7x + 30/x = 8

(70+210)/7x = 8

280/7x = 8

x= 5 kmph

Downstream speed = 7x = 7*5 = 35 kmph


5) Answer: D

Upstream speed = 228/19 = 12 kmph

Speed of boat = x

Speed of stream = y

216/12 + 216/(x + y) = 27

216/(x + y) = 9

x + y = 24

Speed of the boat = (24 + 12)/2 = 18 kmph

Speed of upstream = 96/6 = 16 kmph

Speed of boat = 5x

Speed of stream = x

5x – x = 16

x = 4

Downstream speed = 6 * 4 = 24 kmph

Required time = 228/24

= 9.5 hours

The time ratio of Upstream to downstream = 5 : 4

The speed ratio of upstream to downstream = 4 :5

Boat speed = 36 kmph = (4x+5x)/2 = 4.5x

4.5x = 36

According to the question

x/15 + (x/2)/5 = 8

Speed of the boat along the stream = 450/15 = 30 kmph

Speed of the boat against the stream = 140/7 = 20 kmph
