Answers :

1) Answer: B

The speed of boat upstream = 12/48*60 = 15 kmph

Boat’s speed : Stream’s speed = 6:1

Upstream’s speed : Downstream’s speed = (6-1) : (6+1)

= 5 : 7 = 15 : 21

Downstream’s speed = 21 kmph

Distance travelled by boat in 40 minutes downstream = 21*40/60

= 14 km

2) Answer: E

Distance = d

Speed of stream = x

Speed of boat = x * 300/100 = 3x

d/4x = 6

d/(3x – x) = 12

We cannot find the answer.

3) Answer: C

Sum of the speed of upstream and downstream = (u-v) + (u+v)

2u = 24km/hr

Speed of the boat u= 12km/hr

Boat can covers 240km downstream in 16 hours,

240/16= 12+v

15 = 12+v

v=3 km/hr

4) Answer: C

Let speed of stream = a km/h

Speed of boat in still water = 8a km/h

According to question

28/ (8a – a) + 45/ (8a + a) = 3/4

4/a + 5/a = 3/4

9/a = 3/4

a = 12

Speed of boat in still water = 96 km/h

5) Answer: D

Let the speed of boat in still water be x km/hr,

According to the question,

[240 / (x – 10)] – [240 / (x + 10)] = 16

[(x + 10) – (x – 10)] / [x2 – 100] = 16 * (1/240)

(20 / [x2 – 100]) = 1/15

x2 – 100 = 300

x2 = 400

x = 20

The speed of boat in still water = 20 km/hr

6) Answer: B

Speed of the boat = x

Speed of the stream = y

20/(x + y) = 10/60

x + y = 120———–(1)

40/(x – y) = 1

x – y = 40 —–(2)

From (1) and (2)

2x = 160

x = 80 kmph

Required time = 240/80 = 3 hours

7) Answer: C

Let the speed of boat = a km/h

Speed of stream = (a – 13) km/h

According to question,

221 / (a + a – 13) = 221 / (a –a + 13) – 4

221 = (2a – 13) x 13

2a – 13 = 17

a = 15

Speed of boat in still water = 15 km/h

Speed of stream = 15 – 13 = 2 km/h

Required time = 578 / (15 + 2) = 34 hours

8) Answer: A

Let the speed of the boat in still water and that of the stream be 6X kmph and X kmph respectively.

Downstream speed of the boat=7X

Upstream speed of the boat=5X

According to question,

98/7X + 70/5X=4

14/X +14/X=4

X = 7

Upstream speed = 6X – X = 5X = 5 * 7 = 35 kmph

9) Answer: E

Speed of boat A = 2x

Speed of boat b = 3x

Speed of steam = 6 kmph

Downstream speed of boat B = 120/5 = 24 kmph

Speed of boat B = 24 – 6 = 18 kmph

Speed of boat A = 18 * 2/3 = 12 kmph

Required distance = 8 * (12 – 6) = 48 km

10) Answer: A

Speed of the boat = 100x

Speed of stream = 100x * 75/100 = 75x

280/(100x + 75x) = 8

x = 0.2

Speed of the boat = 100 * 0.2 = 20 kmph

Speed of the stream = 75 * 0.2 = 15 kmph

Required difference = [420/(20 – 15)] – [420/(20 + 15)] = 72 hours

Answers :

11) Answer: D

(D-36)/2K=1/2  x  D/3K

3D – 108 = D

D = 108/2=54km

Upstream speed = (54-22)/2= 32/2 = 16 kmph

2K = 16

3K = 24

So, downstream speed = 24 kmph

Speed of the current= ½(24-16) = 4 Kmph

12) Answer: A

Speed of the current = C km/hr

Speed of the boat in still water = B km/hr

180/(B + C) = 180/24 – 2.5

180/(B + C) = 7.5 – 2.5

180/5 = B + C

B + C = 36 km/hr

Speed of the boat in still water = (36 + 24)/2 = 60/2 = 30 km/hr

13) Answer: A

D/(B + W) = x

D = x * (B + W)

D/(B – W) = 3x

D = 3x * (B – W)

x * (B + W) = 3x (B – W)

B + W = 3B – 3W

2B = 4W

B/W = 2/1

14) Answer: D

Let the speed of the stream = x

And the speed of the boat in still water = 4x

150/(4x+1x) + 120/(4x-1x) = 7

150/5x + 120/3x = 7

30/x + 40/x = 7

70 = 7x

x = 10

The speed of the boat in still water = 4*10 = 40 km/hr

110/11=x

x=10 km/hr

The speed of the boat in upstream =5*10=50 km/hr

The speed of the boat in downstream =6*10=60 km/hr

The speed of the boat in still water= (50+60)/2=110/2=55 km/hr

Required time=220/55=4 hours

16) Answer: D

Let speed of boat in still water be x kmph

Distance= Speed * Time

In upstream, D/(x-12) = 20

D = 20x – 240

In downstream, D/(x+12) = 8

D = 8x+96

20x- 240 = 8x + 96

12x = 336

x= 28kmph

D/(28-12) = 20

D/ 16 = 20

D = 320km

17) Answer: A

Let the speed of the stream = x

And the speed of the boat in still water = 5x

240/(5x+1x) + 240/(5x-1x) = 10

240/6x + 240/4x = 10

40 + 60 = 10x

x = 100/10

x = 10

The speed of the boat in still water = 5*10 = 50 km/hr

Required time = 150/50 = 3 hours

18) Answer: B

Speed of the current = 5y

Speed of the boat = 5y * 140/100 = 7y

(x + 14)/ (7y + 5y) = 1/5 * ((x – 10/ (7y – 5y)))

5x + 70 = 6x – 60

x = 130

19) Answer: D

Speed of the boat = x

Speed of the stream = y

Distance = D

Speed of upstream = 8 kmph

D/(x + y) + D/8 = 57

We cannot find the answer.

20) Answer: B

Upstream speed = 8/30 * 60 = 16 kmph

Downstream speed = 8/20 * 60 = 24 kmph

Boat’s speed = (16+24)/2 = 40/2 =20 kmph

Speed of current = (24-16)/2 = 8/2 = 4 kmph

Now new speed of current = 4*3 = 12 kmph

Required time = [8/(20+12)] * 60 = (8/32)*60 = 15 minutes

36) Answer: D

Downstream Speed = 5x and Upstream speed = 3x

25/5x + 30/3x = 7.5

=> x = 2

Speed of the boat in still water = ½ * (Downstream speed + Upstream speed)

= ½ * (5x + 3x) = (8*2)/2 = 8kmph

37) Answer: E

300/(5x – 4x) + 432/(5x + 4x) = 58

2700 + 432 = 58 * 9x

x = 6

Speed of current = 4 * 6 = 24 kmph

38) Answer: A

Downstream speed of boat A = 96/6 = 16 kmph

Downstream speed of boat B = 120/8 = 15 kmph

Speed of boat A = 16 – 5 = 11 kmph

Speed of boat B = 15 – 5 = 10 kmph

Required time = 180/(11 – 5) + 180/(10 – 5)

= 66 hours

39) Answer: D

Speed of downstream = d/9

Speed of upstream = d/13.5

(x + 5) * 9 = (x – 5) * 13.5

9x + 45 = 13.5x – 67.5

x = 25 kmph

40) Answer: A

Upstream speed = 84/7 = 12 kmph

Speed of boat = x

Speed of current = y

x – y = 12

x + y = 125/100 * x

4x + 4y = 5x

x/y = 4/1

4k – k = 12

k = 4

Speed of downstream = 4 * 4 + 4 = 20 kmph

Required distance = 6 * 20 = 120 km
