World Human Rights Day

  • Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December annually across the world, as it was on this day in 1948 that United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
  • This day is observed to protect the fundamental human rights of all people and their basic human freedom.
  • The theme of 2019 is Youth Standing Up for Human Rights.

International Mountain Day

  • International Mountain Day is celebrated on 11 December every year to educate children and people about the role that mountains play in providing fresh water, clean energy, food, and recreation.
  • The theme of 2019 is ‘Mountains matter for Youth’.

Abu Dhabi selected as world’s leading sports tourism destination

  • Abu Dhabi has been selected as the world’s leading Sports tourism Destination at the 26th edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA) being held in Muscat.
  • This is the seventh time in a row that Abu Dhabi has been selected for this coveted award.
  • The award is the latest in several prestigious accolades gained by Abu Dhabi this year, including being selected as the West Asia’s Leading Business Tourism Destination at the West Asia edition of WTA and Best City Break at the UK’s Selling Travel Agents’ Choice Awards.

Government bonds launches interest rate options on 10-year government bonds

  • Stock exchange major NSE has launched interest rate options on 10-year government bonds to provide institutional investors ability to manage risk through a non-linear product.
  • Interest rate options will provide institutional investors the ability to manage risk through a non-linear product, which is otherwise not available to them.
  • Market participants can use options to trade and hedge interest rate risk on a transparent platform.
  • Interest rate options are based on the underlying government 10-year bonds — the 7.26 per cent 2029 bond and the 6.45 per cent 2029 bond.
  • The unit of trading is set at Rs 2 lakh face value of government securities, corresponding to 2,000 units.

J&K Lt Governor Girish Murmu inaugurates Rajouri bridge

  • Lt Governor Girish Chandra Murmu dedicated the 72-metre-long Multi Cell Box Type Load Class 70 bridge to the Nation in Rajouri.
  • The bridge spans over Draj nallah and connected Draj Area to Tehsil Kotranka area under District Rajouri.
  • Lt Governor praised Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for their dedication and nation building through infrastructure development and war preparedness through construction of roads, bridge and tunnels.
  • Draj bridge is an important bridge for military as well as for socio-economic development of the Rajouri district as a whole.  This bridge will facilitate all weather and speedy movement of Army troops as well as locals.

HP government decides to sell water of Yamuna

  • The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet approved signing of an MoU to sell water from the Yamuna.
  • The state government would earn Rs 21 crore per annum from this decision.
  • The cabinet also decided to fill up as many as 3,636 posts of JBT, Classical and Vernacular (C&V) and TGT categories of teachers in elementary education department.
  • These posts will be filled up on contract basis as per the Recruitment and Promotion Rules. These include 684 posts of TGT Arts, 359 of TGT Non-Medical, 261 of TGT Medical, 1,049 of Shastri, 590 of language teachers and 693 posts of JBT.

UP Cabinet gives nod to setting up 218 fast-track courts for rapes, crimes against children

  • The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Monday cleared a proposal to set up 218 fast-track courts for hearing cases pertaining to crimes against children and rapes.
  • The UP Cabinet has decided that for hearing of cases of rapes and crimes committed on children, 218 fast-track courts will be set up. Of these, 144 courts will hear cases of rape, while 74 courts will hear cases in which POCSO Act has been slapped
  • For these fast-track courts, 218 posts of additional session judge have been created, and staff posts for the court will also be created.
  • An estimated expenditure of Rs 63 lakh will be incurred on each of the new fast-track court.

Dhanlaxmi Bank’s Board appoints V Viswanathan as additional director

  • V Viswanathan has been appointed as Additional Director on the Board of Dhanlaxmi Bank.
  • Viswanathan, who retired as Chief General Manager of State Bank of Hyderabad in 2017.
  • The Bank had appointed G Venkatanarayanan as Additional Director with effect from October 31, 2019.
  • T Latha had resigned as MD & CEO and Director of Dhanlaxmi Bank due to personal reasons.

MOU signed Between NSIC & ARAMCO Asia for development in Oil & Gas Sectors

  • An MoU has been signed recently between NSIC and Aramco Asia for the development of MSME Ecosystem in India in Oil & Gas Sector. This MoU will pave a way for accredited Indian MSMEs to carve out a space as vendors in the Global space.
  • NSIC is the flagship Mini Ratna PSU under Ministry of MSME in the business of facilitating MSMEs in India and  Aramco  is world’s largest Oil & Gas Company from Govt. of Saudi Arabia having reported revenue of USD 355 Billion Dollar (2018) and estimated market value of 1.5 Trillion Dollars.

Right Livelihood Award honours four activists working for justice

  • The award ceremony took place at Stockholm, Sweden at the end of a Final event of a ten day long program of celebrations in Germany, Switzerland and Sweden.
  • This year’s new Right Livelihood laureates are Aminatou Haidar of Western Sahara; Guo Jianmei of China; Davi Kopenawa and the Hutukara Yanomami Association of Brazil; and Sweden’s own Greta Thunberg.
  • Aminatou Haidar has defended human rights in Western Sahara for decades. For this, Morocco imprisoned and tortured her for years.
  • Guo Jianmei was honoured for her pioneering and persistent work in securing women’s rights in China.
  • She is the first public interest lawyer working in legal aid in China, with a strong focus on women’s issues, like domestic violence and equal pay for equal work.
  • Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist who is actually from Stockholm. In September, she travelled across the Atlantic in a zero-emissions sailboat, arriving in New York City in time for the United Nations Climate Action Summit.
  • The fourth and final of this year’s Right Livelihood Award recipients is a leading defender of the Amazon from Brazil, Davi Kopenawa, along with the organization he co-founded, the Hutukara Yanomami Association.

Abanindranath Tagore’s Book ‘Nalak’, translated in English by Urbi Bhaduri

  • A book by Rabindranath Tagore’s nephew Abanindranath which parallelly examines the journey of the Buddha through various stages of his life as well as that of a young village lad has been translated into English.
  • “Nalak” in its English translation has no chapters. Another feature is a bunch of new illustrations in the pen-and-ink style.
  • The illustrations present a well-researched theme, apparently inspired by the style of Buddhist tankha paintings while depicting the details of clothing, environment, buildings, paths and gardens, cities and villages, mythical figures, animals, objects and people.
  • The illustrations along with the lyrical narrative also trace the restless spirit of Nalak, who cannot put his mind to school work and feels imprisoned at home.

UAE, US joint military exercise ‘Iron Union 12’commences

  • ‘Iron Union 12’, a joint military exercise between the ground forces of the UAE and the United States, commenced.
  • ‘Iron Union 12’ will see the two sides take part in joint military cooperation to enhance combat and tactical capabilities.
  • The joint military exercises of the UAE Armed Forces with fraternal and friendly countries takes place in a manner consistent with latest developments, and reflects the UAE Armed Forces’ determination to stand firmly against all threats and challenges facing the region.

13th South Asian Games concludes

  • 13th South Asian Games concluded held at historic Dasaratha Rangshala in Kathmandu Nepal.
  • India finished on top with 312 medals comprising 174 gold, 93 silver and 45 bronze.
  • Host Nepal remained second and Sri Lanka got third place.
  • In the women’s section, Pinki Rani brought first gold in 51 kg category. She defeated Mala Ravi of Nepal in the final. In 57 kg, Sonia Lather won gold by defeating her Sri Lankan opponent. Manju Bamboriya also clinched gold in 64 kg. She beat Nepal’s Punam Rawal. In men’s Sparsh Kumar brought gold. He defeated Mohd. Asif Syed of Pakistan in 52 kg. Varinder Singh lost his bout to Nepal’s Sanil Shahi in 60 kg.
  • Krishan Vikas clinched gold in 69 kg beating Gul Zaib of Pakistan. In 91 kg Narendra brought sixth Gold for the country. He defeated Ashish Duwadi in the final. In Squash India won gold in women’s team event and silver in men’s. Indian girls defeated Pakistan in the finals by 2-1, while men team lost to Pakistan by 1-2.
  • In Basketball Indian men’s and women’s teams clinched gold each. Men team defeated Sri Lanka in the final by 101-62. In Women’s final Indian girls crushed host Nepal by 127-46.
  • In Judo mixed event India won gold. During 10 day long biggest sporting event of South Asia, over 2700 athletes from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Maldives competed for 1119 medals.
