NGT forms committee to stop illegal groundwater extraction

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has set up a committee to formulate steps required to prevent its unauthorised extraction.
  • A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the committee to evolve a robust mechanism to ensure that groundwater is not illegally extracted and to monitor manning and functioning of the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA).
  • The committee comprises joint secretaries of Ministry of Environment and Forests and Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR), Central Ground Water Board, National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, National Remote Sensing Centre and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Indian Railways signs MoUwith Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for facilitation of green initiatives

  • Indian Railways have undertaken some major Green initiatives as part of India’s contribution towards mitigation of global warming and combating climate change. To carry forward this green initiative, anMoU was signed between Ministry of Railways and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for facilitation of green initiatives in Indian Railways at New Delhi.

The objectives of the MoU:

  • Energy efficiency in manufacturing facilities and railway workshops.
  • Greening of Railway properties.
  • Demonstrative pilots of ‘net-zero energy buildings/ railway stations’.
  • Capacity and skill development by continuous sharing of best practices on energy and environment through training programmes.
  • Development of Green procurement policy, waste management policy, solid waste disposal, carbon neutrality, phytoremediation.

Centre to set up 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres across the country

  • Union Government has set a target of setting up 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres across the country. Out of which 4,000 will be set up during this year
  • AYUSH Minister ShripadYessoNaikannounced this during inauguration of a Unani Medical Centre and Siddha Clinical Research Unit at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launches Maritime Communication Services in Mumbai

  • Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched the maritime communication services at Mumbai
  • Maritime Connectivity will enable high-end support to those in sea by providing access to Voice, Data and Video services while traveling on sailing vessels, cruise liners, ships in India, using satellite technology.
  • Nelco, India’s leading VSAT solutions provider is the first Indian company that will now provide quality broadband services to the maritime sector.
  • He also launched a web portal for reporting stolen mobiles to help trace them.

India joins global antimicrobial resistance R&D hub

  • India has become a member of the Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research and Development (R&D) Hub. The announcement was made by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology in New Delhi.
  • The partnership works to address challenges and improve coordination and collaboration in the global antimicrobial resistance research and development. The issue of antimicrobial resistance requires global action with active participation from all world regions and One Health sectors.
  • The Global Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Development hub now has 16 member nations. The hub also has the European Commission, two philanthropic foundations as members and four international organisations as observers.

Union MoS for tourism launches projects under SwadeshDarshan scheme in Goa

  • The Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Prahlad Singh Patel applauded the state of Goa for utilising central funds under the first phase of SwadeshDarshan Scheme. Minister assured that further financial help will be provided to Goa.
  • Coastal areas of Sinquerim-Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim-Keri, Aguada Fort and Aguada jail will be developed under SwadeshDarshan Scheme.
  • On the occasion, the Union Minister also highlighted the achievements of the NDA government in the last 100 days.

Rawat launches Dal PoshitYojana

  • UttarakhandChief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat launched a scheme under which ration card holders in the state will get two kgs of pulses at subsidised rates every month.
  • Launching the ‘MukhyaMantri Dal PoshitYojana’ by distributing pulse packets among the beneficiaries.
  • 32 lakh ration card holders of the state will benefit from the scheme.
  • They will get two kgs of Chana dal (chickpeas split) at the rate of Rs 44 per kg this month. Chana dal comes at Rs 65-Rs 70 per kg in the open market.

Rajasthan government launches‘Jan Soochna’ Portal

  • Rajasthan government has launched ‘Jan Soochna’ public information portal was launched
  • The portal promising to provide information about government authorities and departments to the public in the true spirit of the Right To Information Act.
  • Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the portal at B.M. Birla Auditorium
  • The State government has collaborated with the civil society groups to develop the portal, the first of its kind in the country, initially giving information pertaining to 13 departments on a single platform.

Arunachal Pradesh CM dedicates Dikshi Hydroelectric Project to people of state

  • Arunachal Pradesh, CM PemaKhandu dedicated the Dikshi Hydroelectric Project to the people of the state.
  • The 24 Mega Watt Hydroelectric Project has been installed at Dikshi Village in West Kameng District. It was constructed on the river Phudung by Devi Energies Private Limited.
  • It was completed in a record time of four years with an investment of about 430 crore rupees.

World Bank to sanction Rs 3,000cr for food parks

  • The World Bank will provide Rs 3,000 crore funds to finance mini and mega food parks across the country, particularly in Northeast, and help boost farmers’ income.
  • 15th Indo-US Economic Summit organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce- North India Council (IACC- NIC).
  • The World Bank has agreed to sanction Rs 3,000 crore for the Ministry of Food Processing to enable it finance mini and mega food parks across the country.

RBI increases banks’ loan exposure limit to single NBFC

  • The RBI increased loan exposure limit of banks to a single NBFC (excluding gold loan companies) from 15% to 20% of its capital base, a move that will help increase credit supply to the crisis-ridden shadow banking sector.
  • According to the extant ‘Large Exposures Framework (LEF)’, banks’ exposure to a single non-banking financial company (NBFC) is restricted to 15% of their available eligible capital base, while general single counter-party exposure limit is 20%, which can be extended to 25% by banks’ boards under exceptional circumstances.
  • It has been decided that a bank’s exposure to a single NBFC (excluding gold loan companies) will be restricted to 20% of that bank’s eligible capital base.

RBI cuts risk weight on consumer credit, including personal loan, to 100%

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reduced the risk weight requirement for consumer loans to 100 per cent, a move that will reduce cost of such loans.
  • Currently, the risk weight requirement for such loans is 125 per cent.
  • The relaxed requirement would not be applicable to credit cards.
  • Risk weight refers to the capital banks keep aside as provisioning to cover any loan defaults.
  • It has been decided to reduce the risk weight for consumer credit, including personal loans, but excluding credit card receivables, to 100 per cent.

UN chief appoints Indian AbhijitGuha as new head of Hodeida mission

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of AbhijitGuha, a retired Indian lieutenant general as the head of the UN mission in Hodeida, Yemen.
  • Apart from this AbhijitGuha has also been made the chairman of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) that is tasked with redeploying forces of the Yemeni warring parties in accordance with their agreement.

PepsiCo India ropes in Hima Das as brand ambassador for Gatorade

  • PepsiCo India has roped in star athlete Hima Das as the brand ambassador for its sports drink brand Gatorade.
  • She joins ace shuttler PV Sindhu and javelin star Neeraj Chopra as the brand’s ambassadors in the country.
  • Gatorade India will be paying tribute to the ace sprinter by twisting the ‘Nothing Beats Gatorade’ philosophy into ‘Nothing Beats Hima’.
  • Moreover, Gatorade India will also work with Hima during the period of her partnership to understand her training and race-day nutrition better.

Australia’s Megan Schutt scripts history with maiden ODI hat-trick

  • Right-arm pacer Megan Schutt scripted history by becoming the only woman cricketer from Australia to claim a hat-trick in One Day Internationals (ODIs) in the third ODI against West Indies.
  • Schutt also became the first woman cricketer to claim to two hat-tricks in international cricket. She had claimed her first hat-trick in a T20I against India last year. She had dismissed SmritiMandhana, Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma in consecutive deliveries.
  • She scalped three wickets in the three balls of her final over to enter into the history books.

  • Yugandhar was an IAS officer of 1962-batch.Yugandhar served as a member of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2009.
