Government amends anomaly, all CAPF personnel to now retire at 60 years

  • All personnel working in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) will now retire at a uniform age of 60 years, a government order.
  • The Union home ministry order, the ranks of Constable to Commandant ( Senior Superintendent of Police equivalent) in four forces — Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police force and Sashastra Seema Bal — superannuated at the age of 57, rather than 60.
  • Officers from the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) upto the top-most rank of Director General (DG) in these four forces retired after attaining the age of 60.
  • Thus the government has taken such decision to overcome this discriminatory and unconstitutional practice.

SERB Launches New Scheme ‘SUPRA’ For High Quality Research Funding

  • The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, GOI, has come up with a new scheme named Scientific and Useful Profound Research Advancement (SUPRA), with the sole objective of funding exploration of new scientific and engineering ideas having global impact.
  • The scheme is launched as a part of the Modi government’s 100-day transformative ideas.
  • Supra scheme has been designed to attract high quality research proposals consisting of new hypotheses or challenge existing ones and provide ‘out-of-box’ solutions leading to new areas of study, new scientific concepts, new products and technologies.
  • SERB has launched a very similar scheme to Supra two years ago called Scheme for funding High Risk-High Reward (HRHR) Research, meant for funding conceptually new and risky projects. However, the HRHR Scheme has now been withdrawn since classification of high risk projects was unclear.

Ravinder Takkar replaces Balesh Sharma as CEO of Vodafone Idea

  • The Board of merged telecom operator Vodafone Idea announced that it had accepted Balesh Sharma’s request to step down as chief executive officer (CEO) of Vodafone Idea for personal reasons.
  • Ravinder Takkar, currently Vodafone Group’s representative in India, will be appointed as his successor with immediate effect.

Prasar Bharati will introduce 2 awards namely ‘Neelum Sharma Tejaswini award’ & ‘Achyutananda Sahoo Award’ in honor of Neelum Sharma

  • India’s largest public broadcasting agency, Prasar Bharti’s Chairman A Suryapakash stated that the agency will introduce 2 awards namely ‘Neelum Sharma Tejaswini award’ & ‘Achyutananda Sahoo Award’ in memory of Doordarshan(DD) News (Former anchor), Neelum Sharma who passed away due to cancer.
  • She was known for her programmes like ‘Tejaswini’(Through this show, she focused on woman achievers of India) and ‘Badi Charcha’.

Wipro ties up with IISc Bengaluru for innovative solutions in AI, robotics, 5G

  • Wipro Limited, a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company, announced a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
  • India’s premier institute for research and higher education in science and engineering, to conduct advanced applied research in autonomous systems, robotics and 5G space.
  • The two organisations have jointly set up the Wipro IISc Research and Innovation Network (WIRIN), a hybrid industry-academia collaboration unit, to drive idea discovery, research and innovation in technology and product design.

Sreesanth’s ban to be reduced to seven years, ends next year

  • Tainted Indian pacer S. Sreesanth’s ban for alleged spot-fixing will end next August, BCCI Ombudsman D.K. Jain has ordered, observing that the cricketer is well past his prime having already served six years.
  • His ban period is now lowered to 7 year by the Supreme Court(SC) which will end by september 2020 setting aside the BCCI disciplinary committee’s order banning him for a lifetime.
  • The BCCI(Board of Control for Cricket in India) banned Sreesanth, for life time in August 2013 after he, along with his Rajasthan Royals(RR) teammates of the 6th IPL(Indian Premier League) Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were caught for spot fixing in the match. They were arrested by the Delhi police in 2013.

Former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson elected MCC honorary life member

  • Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, who was widely known for sending shiver down the spine of batsmen, has been elected as an honorary member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
  • The announcement was made by the club during the second Ashes Test which ended in a tense draw at Lord’s.

Virat Kohli  retains top spot in the latest ICC Test rankings

  • The latest test batsmen rankings were released by the ICC (International Cricket Council). The list was topped by India’s Virat Kohli followed by Australia’s Steve Smith at the second spot overtaking New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.
  • England all-rounder Ben Stokes improved by six places to achieve the 26th position while wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow(England) moved seven places up to take the 30th spot.
  • Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne,climbed four places to the 8th position.

India’s junior women boxers win 4 gold medals at Serbian tourney

  • India’s junior women boxers clinched 12 medals at the third Nation’s Cup in Vrbas, Serbia. The team won four gold, four silver and four bronze medals and claimed the runners-up trophy.
  • Tamanna clinched gold in 48 Kilogram category along with Ambeshori Devi in 57 Kilogram, Preeti Dahiya in 60 Kilogram and Priyanka in 66 Kilogram category.
  • In 50 Kilogram, Karnataka’s Anju Devi settled for silver along with Maharashtra’s Simran Verma in 52Kilogram, Haryana’s Manshi Dalal in 75 Kilogram and Punjab’s Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu in 80 Kilogram category.
  • In addition, Goa’s Aashreya Naik picked up a bronze medal in 63 Kilogram category along with Neha in 54 Kilogram category, Khushi in 70 and Alfiya Akram Khan Pathan in plus-80 Kilogram category. Over 160 boxers from 20 countries participated in this tournament, for which India sent a 13-member squad.

Legendary Music Composer Khayyam Passes Away

  • Noted Indian music director Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi, famous as Khayyam, passed away due to health related issues. He was 92.
  • Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi had composed music in iconic movies like Kabhie Kabhie and Umrao Jaan. His illustrious career spanned over four decades. He was a Padma Bhushan awardee.
