  • Every year, on 31 May, World Health Organization and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is “Tobacco and heart disease.”

Ministry of Railways organizes a one day workshop ‘Mission Raftar’

  • Ministry of Railways conducted a one day workshop “Mission Raftaar” aimed at raising the average speed of freight trains and coaching trains in New Delhi.
  • The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Rajen Gohain, Minister of State for Railways & Shri Ashwani Lohani, Chairman,Railway Board.

India Releases Rs33.10 Cr To Nepal For 2 Road Projects

  • India has released 33.10 Crore rupees to Nepaltowards the cost of two road packages of Birgunj-Thori Road being implemented under Postal Highway Projects in Nepal with Government of India’s grant assistance.

Rajasthan Government is the ‘First to launch health schemes for tribal poor’:

  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Wednesday claimed that her State government is the first in the country to launch ambitious health schemes for the benefit of poor tribal people.
  • Raje said this while addressing a public rally in Gadi Assembly constituency of Banswara district.

Milk in midday meals in Rajasthan

  • The students of the government primary and upper primary schools in Rajasthan will get milk in the midday meals thrice in a week under a new scheme for improving nutritional status of children.
  • Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje will inaugurate an “Annapurna Doodh Yojana” on July 2 for supplying milk to schools.

SBI hikes deposit rates by 5-15 bps:

  • State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, has raised retail fixed deposit rates by 5 to 15 basis points on two maturities.
  • Deposit rates (less than Rs. 1 crore) from one year to less than two years have been raised by 15 bps to 6.65%, while those for two years to less than three years have been increased by 5 bps to 6.65%. The new rates came into effect from May 28, 2018. Senior citizens will get 50 bps more than these rates.

Moody’s Slashes India Growth Forecast To 7.3%

  • Moody’s Investors Service reporthas cut India’s GDP growth forecast to 7.3% in 2018,from the previous forecast of 7.5% due to higher oil prices and tighter financial conditions. It, however, kept growth expectation for 2019 remains unchanged at 7.5%.

Microsoft Is Now Third Most Valuable Firm Globally

  • Microsoft has surpassed Alphabet, the parent company of Google, in the market capitalisation for the first time in three years, becoming the third most valuable firm after Apple and Amazon globally.
  • Microsoft had a market cap of $753 billion at the close of trading, almost $14 billion ahead of Alphabet.

  • HDFC Bank MD Aditya Puri has been named in Barron’s list of top 30 Global CEOs, for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway, Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan Chase, Satya Nadella of Microsoft and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook figure in the list.

Kamaljit Bawa first Indian to receive Linnean Medal

  • Indian botanist Kamaljit S. Bawa, president of Bengaluru-based non-profit Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), received the prestigious Linnean Medal in Botany from the Linnean Society of London on May 24.

Yuvraj Singh Awarded ‘Most Inspiring Icon Of The Year For Social Welfare’

  • Indian star cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been awarded the ‘most inspiring icon of the year for Social Welfare” award by the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival (DPIFF) for his exemplary contribution in the field of social welfare.

  • The joint military exerciseSURYA KIRAN-13 between India and Nepal began at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. The military exercise is a biannual event which is conducted alternatively in Nepal and India every six months.

World’s Largest International Maritime Exercise RIMPAC

  • As many as 26 countries, including India, will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific, RIMPAC military exercisefrom June 27 to August 2, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The announcement was made by the Pentagon.

Patanjali Launches New Messaging App ‘Kimbho’:

  • Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali launched a new swadeshi messaging application called ‘Kimbho’to compete with WhatsApp.  Kimbho caters to private and group chats with free phone and video calling.
  • The tagline of Kimbho is “Ab Bharat Bolega”. Patanjali has recently tied up with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)to enter the telecom sector by launching Swadeshi Samriddhi SIM cards.
