World Tuna Day

  • The World Tuna Day is held on 2 May since 2017 to highlight the importance of Tuna fish to the marine ecosystem and the global economy and raise awareness about proper conservation and management to prevent them from crashing.
  • The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized the Day in December 2016.

World Press Freedom Day

  • World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.
  • The 26th celebration of World Press Freedom Day is jointly organized by UNESCO, the African Union Commission and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The main event will take place in Addis Ababa.

UK Becomes First Parliament to Declare Climate Emergency

  • The UK Parliament has passed a declaration for Environment and Climate Emergency on May 01, 2019. Hence the Parliament of the UK has become the first parliament, or the UK has become the first country to pass a declaration on climate emergency.
  • This was a lot of pressure from the opposition Labour leaders for “rapid and dramatic action” to protect the environment for generations to come.
  • The fight for this Climate Emergency was lead by a group called Extinction Rebellion.
  • What does Climate Emergency mean: It means that from now climate and the environment would be at the very centre of all government policy, rather than being on the fringe of political decisions.

VP Venkaiah Naidu releases postage stamp to commemorate 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a postage stamp to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan in New Delhi.
  • Sri Vedanta Desikan called for world peace and said that peace and humanity formed the basis of the spiritual teachings of great saints.

LIC HFL launches Udyam centre

  • LIC Housing Finance (LIC HFL) has launched ‘Udyam’, a skilling centre in Bengaluru.
  • It was launched in association with Lok Bharti Education Society, the implementing partner.
  • Centres of Excellence (CoE) have been launched in Delhi and Bengaluru, and later on will expand to other cities

India biggest recipient of funds from ADB last year

  • India was the biggest recipient of funds from Asian Development Bank last year and would continue to get sovereign loans in excess of USD 3 billion in 2019.
  • ABD will continue to make investment in rural connectivity, urban development and skill development, among others.
  • India received nearly 25 per cent of the total loans sanctioned last year. New commitments included USD 21.6 billion in loans, grants and investments from ADB’s own resources, exceeding the target of USD 19.71 billion and up 10 per cent from 2017.

PNB Housing Finance to mop up USD 1 bn from foreign markets

  • PNB Housing Finance stated that it will raise up to USD 1 billion (around Rs 6,954 crore) from foreign markets, and additional Rs 10,000 crore by issuing bonds.
  • The fund raising move comes days after CARE Ratings placed various facilities of the housing finance company under “credit watch”
  • The housing arm of the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) stated that it will consider raising up to $1 billion through external commercial borrowings (ECB) and issuing non-convertible debentures worth up to Rs. 10,000 crore

  • The Netherlands has emerged as the third largest foreign direct investor in India during 2017-18, with investments pegged at about $2.67 billion across sectors.

BSNL launches ‘Bharat Fibre’ broadband service in Kashmir Valley

  • State-owned telecom firm BSNL has become the first operator to start optical fibre-based high-speed broadband service in Pulwama with the launch of ‘Bharat Fibre’.
  • This is the first such FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) service deployment in the (Kashmir) Valley under this unique revenue share model. Since the Bharat Fibre services are provided on the optical fibre right up to the customer premises, reliable and high-speed internet services are delivered to the customers.

  • Kadiresan has taken charge as Zonal Manager of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in the south
  • He will oversee the operations of 13 divisional offices, 261 branch offices and 262 satellite offices covering Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
  • Prior to this posting, he was the executive director (pension and group schemes), LIC, Central Office, Mumbai.

Rapper Drake breaks record for most wins of all time at Billboard Music Awards

  • The Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
  • The 32-year-old Drake has broken yet another record for his album ‘Scorpion’, as he now has the distinction of having won the most Billboard Music Awards ever.
  • After taking home 12 awards, Drake’s number of wins reached a total of 27.
  • He surpasses Taylor Swift, who has won 23 BBMAs overall.

India retains top spot in ICC Test rankings

  • India retained its top position in the ICC Test rankings, while England remained the number one ODI side in the latest annual d rankings released in Dubai.
  • India also moved two points in second position in the ODI rankings behind England.

Bajrang Punia wins gold at Ali Aliev tournament

  • World number one Bajrang Punia won the gold medal as he defeated Viktor Rassadin in the finals of men’s 65kg freestyle in the Ali Aliyev wrestling tournament in Kaspiisk, Russia.
  • The 25-year-old Indian grappler had won a gold medal at the Asian Championships in Xi’an, China.

Kumar Sangakkara to become first non-British president of MCC

  • Kumar Sangakkara namedas first non-British President of MCC.
  • Kumar Sangakkara, theformer Sri Lanka captain, has been announced as the first non-British President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and will take up his one-year post on October 1, 2019.
  • Sangakkara’s nomination was announced by current president, Anthony Wreford, at the MCC annual general meeting at Lord’s.

Kannada theatre personality Master Hirannaiah passes away

  • Noted Kannada theatre personality Master Hirannaiah died.
  • He was 85 years old and was suffering from a liver complication.
  • His mega hit play ‘Lanchavatara’ had a free form where Master Hirannaiah included a commentary on the day’s politics making the play new with every staging.
