Gujarat launches India’s first trading programme to combat particulate air pollution

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani launched India’s first trading programme to combat particulate air pollution on World Environment Day 2019, which has air pollution as its theme.
  • The programme is a market-based system where the government sets a cap on emissions and allows industries to buy and sell permits to stay below the cap.

Delhi Metro becomes India’s first project to receive power from waste-to-energy

  • To establish an environment-friendly network, the Delhi Metro has become the first ever project in the country to receive power generated from a waste-to-energy plant.
  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started receiving 2 MW power from a 12 MW capacity waste-to-energy plant set up in Ghazipur.
  • DMRC will take approximately 17.5 million units per annum from this plant. However, the energy offtake will depend upon the actual generation of the plant.
  • The waste-to-energy plant set up by East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited (EDWPCL) is based on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Delhi government and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), besides the EDWPCL.

Jharkhand CM inaugurates Haj House

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das inaugurated the Haj House on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
  • Inaugurating the Rs-50 crore Haj House, which can accommodate about 1,000 people for offering Namaaz.
  • This is the reason that the state government has fulfilled an old demand of members of the Muslim community – constructing a modern and grand Haj House.

  • Repo rate reduced by 25 bps to 5.75 per cent for third time in a row
  • Reverse repo rate now stands at 5.50 per cent, marginal standing facility (MSF) rate 6 per cent

  • Cuts GDP growth forecast to 7 per cent from 7.2 per cent for FY20
  • Raises retail inflation forecast for April-September to 3-3.1 per cent and 3.4-3.7 per cent in October-March
  • Projects upward bias in food inflation in near term due to rising prices of food items
  • Forecast risks to inflation trajectory from monsoon uncertainties, unseasonal spike in vegetable prices, crude oil prices, financial market volatility and fiscal scenario
  • Waives RTGS and NEFT charges to promote digital transactions
  • Sets up a panel to review ATM charges, fees levied by banks
  • To issue draft guidelines for ‘on tap’ licensing of small finance banks by August

RBI enters top-10 list of gold holders with 52.3-tonne purchase in FY19

  • The Reserve Bank of India purchased 52.3 tonnes gold in FY19 to augment its foreign exchange reserves, according to the latest data released by the World Gold Council.
  • It has entered league of world’s top-10 gold holding central banks. RBI currently holds 612.6 tonnes of the metal as part of its foreign exchange reserves.
  • The United States is the top holder of Gold Reserves.

LIC revises rule to increase maternity leave to 15 months

  • Female employees of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will now get three more months of maternity leave during their service period.
  • According to the revised rules for maternity leaves notified by the Finance Ministry, an employee will get a maximum of 15 months of maternity leave during her service period.
  • As of March 31, 2018, out of LIC’s total employee strength of nearly 1.12 lakh, 24,000 were women.

Tamil Nadu Health System reform programme gets $287 mn loan from World Bank

  • The central government, Tamil Nadu and the World Bank have signed a $287 million loan agreement for the state’s Health System Reform Programme that aims to improve the quality of health care, reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and fill equity gaps in reproductive and child health services.
  • Tamil Nadu ranks third among all Indian states in the NITI Aayog Health Index.

Bank of Baroda tags Dighi Port chairman Vijay Kalantri as wilful defaulter

  • State-owned lender Bank of Baroda (BoB) has declared Vijay Goverdhandas Kalantri, chairman and managing director of Dighi Port, as a “wilful defaulter” for not repaying his loans.
  • The leading industrialist Vijay Goverdhandas Kalantri and his son Vishal Kalantri, director of Dighi Port, owe nearly Rs 3,334 crore to a consortium of 16 Indian banks, including BoB, and Bank of India is the lead lender.
  • The bank had reportedly placed a public notice in a Mumbai-based newspaper, with photographs of Dighi Port Limited (borrower), Vishal Vijay Kalantri (Director) and Vijay Kalantri (Director and Guarantor), declaring them as “wilful defaulters”.

UDIN mention now mandatory for audit reports

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has mandated the mention of the Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) in audit reports starting July 1.
  • The UDIN would help to verify online whether a certificate or audit report that has been submitted has actually been signed by a chartered accountant.
  • DIN is a unique number, which will be generated for every document certified/attested by Practising Chartered Accountants and registered with the UDIN portal. The portal is available at https://udin.icai.org/.

Sunder Pichai, Nasdaq’s Friedman to receive 2019 Global Leadership Award

  • In United States, Google’s India-born CEO Sundar Pichai and Nasdaq president Adena Friedman have been chosen for the prestigious Global Leadership Awards 2019 by business advocacy group USIBC in recognition of the two companies’ contribution as the leading technology-driven platforms.
  • The award by Washington-based US-India Business Council (USIBC) would be conferred upon Indian-American Pichai, 46, and Friedman, 50, during the next week’s ‘India Ideas Summit’.
  • USIBC Global Leadership Awards recognise top corporate executives from the United States and India whose companies play a major role in catalysing growth in the US-India commercial corridor.

  • Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the American Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo opened the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in The Hague.
  • Some 2 thousand entrepreneurs, investors and representatives of government organizations from 134 countries will meet and make deals at the business summit.
  • The Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2019 is an initiative of the government of United States of America to bring together global leaders in entrepreneurship, innovation, investment and policy to support deals that matters to everyone.

Thaawarchand Gehlot leaves for Buenos Aires to participate in 2nd Global Disability Summit

  • The 2nd edition of the Global Disability Summit will be held at Buenos Aires, Argentina from 6-8 June 2019.
  • Social Justice and Empowerment minister Thaawarchand Gehlot has left for Buenos Aires in Argentina to participate in 2nd Global Disability Summit.
  • The objective of the three-day summit is to deliberate on issues across the world concerning empowerment and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities and to work out a mechanism for enabling them to live an independent and dignified life.
  • The 1stGlobal Disability Summit was held in London in July 2018.

Army’s training exercise “Kharga Prahar” in Punjab ends

  • The exercise “Kharga Prahar”, which began on May 27, was undertaken in the plains of Punjab by various units and formations of Army’s Kharga Corps.
  • A major training exercise conducted by the Indian Army in Punjab ended.
  • The components of the Indian Air Force also participated in the exercise.
  • The exercise setting also incorporated aspects of joint training wherein para drops from Indian Air Force aircraft were carried out and simulated battlefield air strikes were conducted in support of ground forces

Veteran Bollywood actor Dinyar Contractor passes away

  • Veteran actor and theatre legend Dinyar Contractor, who appeared in films such as Baadshah and Khiladi, passed away. He was 79.
  • The actor was best known for his comic roles in films and was awarded a Padma Shri, earlier this year.
