Siddi Tribal Community Achieves Over 72% Literacy Rate – Lauded by the President of India
- In a notable recognition of tribal advancement, the President of India praised the Siddi tribal community for achieving a literacy rate exceeding 72%, marking a major milestone in educational inclusion among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
- The Siddis are an Indo-African tribal community in India, descended from the Bantu people of East Africa, and are distinct from other Scheduled Tribes (STs) due to their unique ethnic and cultural heritage.
Key Highlights
- Historically, the Siddis arrived in India in two main waves — during the 7th century CE with Arab merchants and later in the 16th century CE with Portuguese and British colonialists, often as slaves, servants, blacksmiths, and artisans.
- Over centuries, they have assimilated into Indian society while maintaining elements of their African cultural identity.
- The community primarily resides in Gujarat (Junagadh and Gir forest areas), Karnataka (Uttara Kannada district), Maharashtra, and Telangana, often living in remote and forested regions with a relatively small population.

- As a PVTG, Siddis receive special developmental schemes, including educational support and livelihood assistance aimed at improving their living standards.
- The community speaks Konkani, Urdu, and Marathi, depending on the region, and their main occupations include agriculture, manual labour, and collection of minor forest produce.
