India’s First Wildlife-Safe Highway Launched on NH-45 in Madhya Pradesh

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced India’s first wildlife-safe road on National Highway 45 (NH-45) in Madhya Pradesh, marking a major step towards eco-sensitive infrastructure development.

  • Almost the entire 12-kilometre forest stretch has been covered to ensure consistent speed control.
  • Additional wildlife-friendly measures include the construction of 25 wildlife underpasses, enabling animals to cross safely beneath the road without disturbing traffic.
  • An eight-foot-high iron fence has been installed on both sides of the highway to guide animals towards designated crossing points.
  • The project is part of NHAI’s Green Highways Initiative, aligned with the Green Highways Policy, 2015 of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which promotes environmentally sustainable road development, wildlife protection, and use of eco-friendly practices.
  • The project has been built at a cost of INR 122 crore and is expected to be fully completed in 2025.
