Securities and Exchange Board of India proposes to add definitions of algorithmic and proprietary trading in stock broker regulations

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has proposed to officially include the definitions of “algorithm” and “proprietary trading” in its stock brokers’ regulations.
  • The current rules do not have any definition for such trades done by brokers.
  • Algorithmic trading would be defined as any order generated or placed using automated execution logic.
  • In July 2025, Sebi had temporarily barred US-based Jane Street from accessing the securities market for allegedly manipulating stock indices.
  • In a related move, SEBI has proposed to allow stock brokers to access the Negotiated Dealing System-Order Matching (NDS-OM) platform, which is currently used mainly by banks and primary dealers for trading in government securities.
  • The regulator also intends to define Execution Only Platform (EOP) as any digital or online platform that facilitates transactions like subscriptions and redemptions in direct plans of mutual fund schemes.
  • Furthermore, SEBI has proposed to discontinue defining “small investors” based on a trade size of a market value not exceeding ₹50,000 in a single day.

HDFC ERGO teams up with PhonePe to introduce low-cost health insurance plan

  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company has partnered with PhonePe to launch an affordable health insurance product.
  • The product is designed to serve the ‘missing middle’, which refers to individuals who are typically not covered by health insurance.
  • The affordable premiums start from as low as ₹12 per day, or around ₹4,380 annually, for a coverage of ₹3 lakh.
  • The policy can be purchased instantly through the PhonePe app.
  • The target demographic for this new solution is primarily first-time insurance buyers aged 18-30 years.

  • The partnership covers the issuance of smart cards for regular commuters, as well as paper tickets and QR-based ticketing solutions.
  • The collaboration is expected to boost commuter convenience and promote digital payments in public transport.
  • Mumbai Metro Line 1 connects the Varsova-Andheri-Ghatkopar areas of the city.

Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025

  • Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025 on 17th August 2025, marking the first-of-its-kind draft legislation in the State.
  • The Bill will be introduced in the Legislative Assembly session beginning on 19th August 2025.
  • It aims to extend benefits previously available only to Muslim institutions to Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist, and Parsi educational institutions.

Key Highlights:

  • Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board Act, 2016 and Uttarakhand Non-Government Arabic and Persian Madrasa Recognition Rules, 2019 will be repealed from 1st July 2026.
  • Study of Gurmukhi and Pali will also be recognised in minority educational institutions.
  • Minority status will be granted by the Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education, which will ensure compliance with Uttarakhand Board of School Education standards and fair student evaluations.
  • Institutions must be registered under the Societies Act, Trust Act, or Companies Act and hold land, bank accounts, and assets in the institution’s name.
  • Recognition can be withdrawn in cases of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, or actions against religious/social harmony.
  • The Bill ensures a transparent recognition process, safeguards Constitutional rights of minorities, and maintains quality and excellence in education while not interfering in institutional administration.

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the Bhagirath mobile app as part of the state’s Jal Sanrakshan Abhiyan (Water Conservation Campaign) 2025. The initiative, aligning with the campaign’s theme “Dhara Mera, Naula Mera, Gaon Mera, Prayas Mera,” aims to involve citizens in reporting endangered water sources in their areas.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Inaugurates Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II Projects Worth ₹11,000 Crore in Delhi

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated two major National Highway projects worth nearly ₹11,000 crore at Rohini, Delhi.
  • The projects — Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — mark a significant step in easing congestion and boosting connectivity across Delhi-NCR.

Key Highlights:

  • The 10.1 km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway was inaugurated, built at a cost of ₹5,360 crore. It provides multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi, DMRC Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and Dwarka cluster Bus Depot.
    • Package I: 5.9 km from Shiv Murti intersection to Dwarka Sector-21 Road Under Bridge.
    • Package II: 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 RUB to Delhi–Haryana Border, linking directly to UER-II.
  • The 19 km Haryana section of the expressway had already been inaugurated in March 2024.
  • The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II, along with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, built at a cost of around ₹5,580 crore.
    • These links will decongest Inner and Outer Ring Roads, Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09.
    • They will provide direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, boost industrial connectivity, cut travel time, and ease goods movement across NCR.
  • Over the last 11 years, Delhi-NCR has seen unprecedented connectivity improvements with modern expressways, expanded metro networks, and advanced systems like Namo Bharat rapid rail.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab rail bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir. This marks the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 42-year-old project aimed at integrating the Kashmir Valley with the national railway network.

National Anubhav Awards 2025 Celebrates 10 Years of Contribution

  • Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) launched the  ‘Anubhav’ portal in 2015 to document the administrative history of India through memoirs of retired employees.
  • To encourage participation, 05 National Anubhav Awards were instituted in 2015.
  • Eligibility: Any employee retiring within the next 8 months or retired within the last 3 years can submit their write-up on the portal.
  • The published write-ups are evaluated by DoPPW for 05 Anubhav Awards or 10 Anubhav Jury Awards.

Key Highlights

  • 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of National Anubhav Awards with 12,500+ memoirs published on the portal.
  • The Awards are governed by the National Anubhav Awards Scheme, which has undergone several reforms:
    • 2022Anubhav Awardees’ Speak webinar series launched for motivating soon-to-retire employees.
    • 2023 – Introduction of 10 Jury Awards (total 15 awards); awards assigned across pay levels (1–6, 7–12, 13 & above) to ensure wider participation.
    • 2024Marking system introduced for objective evaluation; employees of 12 PSBs & CPSEs included in the scheme.
    • 2025Marks assigned for feedback/suggestions in the marking system under the National Anubhav Awards Scheme 2026.
  • Till date: 59 Anubhav Awards and 19 Jury Awards conferred across 7 ceremonies (2016 onwards, except 2020–21 due to COVID).
  • Top contributors of write-ups: CRPF, CISF, DRDO.
  • Maximum awards won by: DRDO, CRPF, and Ministry of Railways.
  • 2025 Awards:
    • Write-ups from 42 Ministries/Departments/Organizations published.

  • The 8th Ceremony of National Anubhav Awards will be held on 18 August 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, with Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoS (PP) felicitating 15 awardees from 11 Ministries/Departments.
  • One-third of awardees are women, showing their growing contribution in governance.

Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025 Introduced in Lok Sabha

  • The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal introduced the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025 in Lok Sabha, after approval by the Union Cabinet.
  • The Minister also requested the Hon’ble Speaker to refer the Bill to a Select Committee, which will submit its report by the first day of the next Session.

Key Highlights :

  • The Bill builds on the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023, which decriminalised 183 provisions in 42 Central Acts administered by 19 Ministries/Departments (notified on 11th August 2023).
  • The 2025 Bill expands the reforms to cover 16 Central Acts administered by 10 Ministries/Departments.
  • A total of 355 provisions are proposed to be amended:
    • 288 provisions decriminalised to foster Ease of Doing Business.
    • 67 provisions amended to facilitate Ease of Living.
  • The Bill also proposes 67 amendments under the New Delhi Municipal Council Act, 1994 (NDMC Act) and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to support Ease of Living.
  • Key features of the Bill:
    • First-time contraventions: Advisory or warning for 76 offences under 10 Acts.
    • Decriminalisation: Imprisonment clauses for minor, technical, or procedural defaults replaced with monetary penalties or warnings.
    • Rationalisation of penalties: Proportionate penalties with graduated punishment for repeated offences.
    • Adjudication mechanisms: Designated officers empowered to impose penalties through administrative processes, reducing judicial burden.
    • Revision of fines/penalties: Automatic 10% increase every three years to maintain deterrence without new legislative amendments.
  • Four Acts already covered under Jan Vishwas Act, 2023 — Tea Act, 1953; Legal Metrology Act, 2009; Motor Vehicles Act, 1988; Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 — are proposed for further decriminalisation in the 2025 Bill.
  • The Bill reflects the Government’s vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance”, aiming to boost Ease of Doing Business, Ease of Living, and sustainable economic growth.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla assigned additional charge as Nagaland Governor after L. Ganesan’s demise

  • Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been given the additional charge of performing the duties of the Nagaland Governor following the death of L. Ganesan.
  • L. Ganesan, who was serving as the Governor of Nagaland since February 2023, passed away on August 15, 2025.
  • The appointment of Ajay Kumar Bhalla was made by the President of India on August 16, 2025.
  • Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a retired IAS officer and former Union Home Secretary, was appointed as the Governor of Manipur in 2024.
  • This type of additional charge appointment is a common constitutional practice in India to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of a gubernatorial office during a sudden vacancy.

Note :

  • According to Article 155 of the Indian Constitution, the Governor of a State is appointed by the President of India.
  • Article 157 outlines the eligibility criteria for the role, stating that the appointee must be a citizen of India and at least 35 years old.

Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan nominated as NDA’s candidate for Vice President election

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan was the ruling NDA’s candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, scheduled for September 9, 2025.
  • C. P. Radhakrishnan is a former president of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit and an RSS veteran.
  • He is currently serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, a position he assumed on July 31, 2024.
  • He previously served as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024, and also held additional charge as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry (March-July 2024).
  • The Vice-Presidential post became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, citing health reasons.
  • Radhakrishnan is credited with “laying the foundation of the party in the south” during his tenure as Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2004 to 2007.

Odisha names Madhuri Dixit as brand ambassador for handloom sector                                                 

  • The Odisha government has appointed Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador for the state’s handloom industry.
  • The announcement was made by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the inauguration of ‘EKTA’ (Exhibition-cum-Knowledge Sharing for Textile Advantage), an initiative to promote handloom products.
  • The event was held to mark the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations in the state.
  • The ‘EKTA’ initiative is designed to provide market access, training, and financial support to local handloom artisans.
  • During the Odisha Textile Conclave, 33 MoUs were signed, valued at ₹7,808 crore, with the potential to create 53,300 employment opportunities in the textile sector.

China hands over third of eight advanced Hangor-class submarines to Pakistan                    

  • China has delivered the third of eight new “advanced” Hangor-class submarines to Pakistan.
  • This delivery is part of China’s efforts to enhance Pakistan’s naval strength and support its presence in the Indian Ocean.
  • The launching ceremony for the third submarine took place in Wuhan, Hubei province, Central China.
  • The second Hangor-class submarine was delivered in March of the current year.
  • The Hangor-class submarines are based on China’s Type 039B Yuan-class diesel-electric attack submarine.
  • They are equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which provides extended underwater endurance.
  • This order for eight submarines is one of China’s largest military export transactions.
  • According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China supplies over 81% of Pakistan’s military hardware.
  • The remaining five submarines are scheduled for delivery by the end of the decade.

Deep Ocean Mission: India’s Pathway to Exploring the Ocean Floor                             

  • The Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) was launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on September 7, 2021.
  • The mission aims to develop technologies for the exploration and sustainable utilization of the deep ocean’s resources.
  • It has a total investment of ₹4,077 crore over a period of five years.
  • The mission is part of India’s broader strategy to advance its Blue Economy, which includes marine-based industries like fishing, shipping, and tourism.
  • The United Nations (UN) has named the 2021-2030 decade as the ‘Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development’.
  • India has a significant advantage with its 7,517 km of coastline and a vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Key components of the mission include:

  • Development of a Manned Submersible (Matsya 6000) to carry a three-person crew to a depth of 6,000 meters.
  • Development of an Integrated Mining System to extract polymetallic nodules from the deep sea.
  • Development of Ocean Climate Change Advisory Services.
  • Technological innovations for deep-sea biodiversity exploration and conservation.
  • Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration for identifying multi-metal hydrothermal sulphide sites.
  • Research on generating energy and freshwater from the ocean (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion – OTEC).
  • The Samudrayaan Project is an initiative to work on the deep-sea exploration component of the mission.
  • India has already made progress with successful trials of indigenous deep-sea technologies.
  • For example, the Ocean Mineral Explorer (OMe 6000), an autonomous vehicle, reached a depth of 5,271 meters in December 2022.
  • The successful completion of the DOM would place India among a small group of nations with advanced deep-sea exploration capabilities.

Russia set to launch Venera-D mission for fresh exploration of Venus    

  • Russia is preparing to launch the Venera-D interplanetary mission to revisit the planet Venus.
  • The launch is planned to take place before 2036 as part of Russia’s new national space program.
  • Preliminary design work is scheduled to begin in January 2026.
  • The Venera-D mission will consist of a lander, a balloon probe, and an orbital spacecraft.
  • The mission is a follow-up to the Soviet Union’s Venera probes of 1975 and 1982, which provided the only images of Venus’s surface.
  • The project is being developed in collaboration with the Lavochkin Association.

  • The Udyam Sakhi Portal is an initiative of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME).
  • Its main purpose is to support women entrepreneurs in starting, building, and growing their businesses, helping them become self-reliant.
  • The portal provides information on various financial schemes (like PMEGP, CGTMSE, MUDRA, TReDS), policies, and programs for women entrepreneurs.
  • It also offers details on preparing a business plan, information about exhibitions and trade fairs, and contact details for nodal offices and supporting organizations.
  • The portal was developed in 2018 at an expenditure of ₹43.52 lakhs.
  • As of the report, a total of 4,535 women have registered on the portal.

  • Reliance, founded in 1957, continues to dominate energy, telecom, retail, and digital platforms.
  • The Ambanis’ wealth rose 10% year-on-year, reflecting resilience amid global uncertainties.

  • Birla Family secured the 2nd position with a valuation of ₹6.47 lakh crore.
    • Led by Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Aditya Birla Group is a fourth-generation conglomerate with interests in cement, telecom, aluminium, and financial services.
    • The group’s valuation expanded by ₹1.1 lakh crore in 2025.

India to Host Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2025

  • India will host the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2025 for the first time, the country’s biggest international winter sports event.
  • The event will be held from 20 to 23 August 2025 at Maharana Pratap Sports College, Raipur, Dehradun.

  • Amitabh Sharma, President of the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI), announced the competition details.

Australian cricket legend Bob Simpson, former player, captain and coach, passed away at 89                               

  • Bob Simpson, a highly influential figure in Australian cricket as a former player, captain, and coach, has died at the age of 89.
  • He represented Australia in 62 Tests and two One-Day Internationals between 1957 and 1978.
  • Simpson coached the Australian team from 1986 to 1996.
  • Under his coaching, Australia achieved significant victories, including winning the 1987 World Cup, four Ashes campaigns, and the 1995 Frank Worrell Trophy (ending a 17-year drought against the West Indies).
  • He is one of only seven Australians to have scored a triple-century in Test cricket.
  • His contributions were recognized with several honors, including being made a Member of the Order of Australia (1978) and an Officer of the Order of Australia (2007).
