Reserve Bank of India Increases Agency Commission for Banks Handling Government Transactions

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased agency commission for banks conducting government business such as revenue receipts and payments, pension payments, and other related transactions.
  • The move aims to encourage agency banks to improve efficiency in handling government-related transactions.
  • For revenue receipt and payment transactions in electronic (e-) mode, the agency commission has been raised from ₹9 to ₹12 per transaction.
  • For physical mode transactions related to revenue receipts and payments, the commission remains ₹40 per transaction (unchanged).
  • For pension payments relating to Central/State Governments, the commission has increased from ₹75 to ₹80 per transaction.
  • For other payments (non-pension), the commission rate has been raised from 5 paise to 7 paise per ₹100 turnover.
  • The revised commission rates will be effective from April 1, 2025.
  • RBI clarified that commission may be paid on all payment transactions handled by agency banks, except those that are pre-funded or where the government provides some compensation to the banks.

RuPay JCB Cards to Provide Cashback on In-Store Purchases Across 8 Asian Nations

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in partnership with JCB International, announced a limited-time 25% cashback offer for RuPay debit and credit cardholders.
  • The offer aims to expand RuPay card usage in eight Asian countries: Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
  • The cashback is valid for in-store (point of sale) transactions until August 31, 2025.
  • To be eligible for cashback, a cardholder must complete a minimum of two transactions in the eligible countries during the offer period.
  • The maximum cashback per transaction is ₹1,500.
  • The total cashback cap per card during the offer period is ₹15,000.

Securities and Exchange Board of India Urges Investors to Use CeFCoM Platform for Payments to Advisers and Research Analysts

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is encouraging investors to make payments to investment advisers and research analysts through the Centralized Fee Collection Mechanism (CeFCoM) to protect against financial fraud and unauthorized fund collections.
  • Use of CeFCoM is optional, but SEBI highlights its benefits in enhancing transparency, security, and trust in the investment advisory ecosystem.
  • CeFCoM was launched on October 1, 2024, and is operated by BSE Ltd. in collaboration with MF Utilities India Pvt. Ltd.
  • CeFCoM supports multiple digital payment modes including Net Banking, UPI/UPI Autopay, Debit/Credit Cards, IMPS/NEFT/RTGS, eNACH, and cheques.
  • As of June 10, 2025, investors have paid over ₹5 crore through CeFCoM.
  • The platform helps investors distinguish between SEBI-registered advisers/analysts and unregistered fraudulent entities, reducing the risk of deception via misleading schemes and payment links.
  • SEBI plans to launch a digital verification tool called ‘SEBI Check’ from October 1, 2025, allowing investors to verify authenticity of UPI handles and bank account details before making payments.
  • The new structured UPI handle system will use readable usernames with category-specific suffixes like ‘brk’ (brokers), ‘mf’ (mutual funds), and an ‘@valid’ tag issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • Verified UPI handles will have a green triangle with a thumbs-up icon as a visual indicator of legitimacy.
  • SEBI also intends to collaborate with online app stores to ensure only validated apps for investment-related payments are listed, enhancing digital trust.

Andhra Pradesh’s Belum Caves declared Geo Heritage Site by Geological Survey of India (GSI)

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a crucial meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney to “reset” bilateral ties.
  • The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
  • PM Modi will also hold bilateral talks with leaders from Germany, Italy, and Ukraine.
  • No meeting is scheduled between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump at the G7, as Trump left the summit early due to tensions in West Asia.
  • A meeting was expected in light of the pending India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which both countries aim to conclude before July 9, ahead of higher US tariffs taking effect.
  • This would have been their first meeting after the Pulwama terror attack and India’s Operation Sindoora against terror infrastructure in Pakistan.
  • Despite not being a G7 member, India was invited due to its global importance and role in representing the Global South.
  • PM Modi arrived in Calgary, marking his first visit to Canada in over a decade.

  • Saurav Goyal joined Swiggy in June 2020 and was earlier serving as head of business finance.
  • In his previous role, Goyal contributed significantly to aligning financial planning with business outcomes and advancing Swiggy’s strategic objectives.
  • The appointment reflects Swiggy’s emphasis on developing internal talent and building a future-ready organisation.
  • As head of the Driver and Delivery Organisation, Goyal will lead initiatives to empower delivery partners, a key pillar of Swiggy’s ecosystem.

Anuradha Thakur to Succeed Ajay Seth on SEBI Board; RBI Board Notification Expected Soon

  • Anuradha Thakur, Economic Affairs Secretary designate, will join the Board of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), effective July 1, 2025.
  • She will replace Ajay Seth, the outgoing Finance and Economic Affairs Secretary, who retires on June 30,2025.
  • A notification for her inclusion in the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is also expected soon.
  • Ajay Seth was an ex-officio member on both the SEBI and RBI Boards; Thakur will succeed him in both roles.
  • The SEBI Board consists of a Chairman, four full-time members, and three part-time ex-officio members — including the RBI Deputy Governor, Economic Affairs Secretary, and Corporate Affairs Secretary.
  • Apart from Thakur, Corporate Affairs Secretary Deepti Gaur Mukerjee is another government representative on SEBI’s Board.
  • The RBI Central Board includes two ex-officio government nominees from the Finance Ministry — the Economic Affairs Secretary and Financial Services Secretary.
  • Thakur will join as the new Economic Affairs Secretary member.

India Names New Ambassador to North Korea After Four-Year Gap                               

  • India has appointed Aliawati Longkumer as the next Ambassador to North Korea, marking the resumption of diplomatic engagement after a four-year gap.
  • Aliawati Longkumer is a 2008-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and is currently serving as Charge d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Asuncion, Paraguay.
  • He will take charge in Pyongyang shortly, as per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  • India reopened its embassy in Pyongyang in December 2024, after its closure in July 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions.
  • The last ambassador to North Korea before the closure was Atul Malhari Gotsurve.
  • Before reopening, India conducted security assessments and implemented anti-surveillance measures.
  • India halted all trade with North Korea in 2017 to comply with United Nations sanctions, but did not sever diplomatic ties.
  • India–North Korea relations are shaped by strategic concerns, especially North Korea’s historical support to Pakistan’s missile programme.
  • In 2018, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh visited North Korea.
  • India has extended humanitarian assistance, including food and medical aid, and provided training to North Korean diplomats and scientists.

Indian Army Troops Depart for India-France Joint Military Exercise Shakti

  • The Indian Army contingent has departed to participate in the 8th edition of Exercise SHAKTI, a biennial India-France Joint Military Exercise.
  • The exercise will be conducted at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie, France, from 18th June to 1st July 2025.
  • The Indian contingent includes 90 personnel, primarily from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, along with troops from other arms and services.
  • The French contingent, also comprising 90 personnel, will be represented by the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).
  • Exercise SHAKTI is held biennially and aims to enhance interoperability, operational coordination, and military-to-military cooperation between the two armies.
  • The 2025 edition will focus on joint operations in a sub-conventional environment, under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, conducted in semi-urban terrain.
  • The exercise will enable troops to:Rehearse tactical drills, Share best practices in Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs), Train on contemporary military technologies, Strengthen physical endurance
  • It also fosters esprit-de-corps, mutual respect, and professional camaraderie between the Indian and French forces.

  • Chiefs’ Chintan is a structured two-day interaction between the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, and former Chiefs of the Army Staff (CsOAS) held in New Delhi.
  • The conclave is held after Operation SINDOOR and aims to leverage institutional knowledge and experience of former Chiefs to guide the transformation and future direction of the Indian Army.
  • A key highlight was a detailed operational briefing on Operation SINDOOR, including the joint conduct of operations with the Indian Air Force and Navy.
  • The operation’s execution, strategic impact, and jointmanship model were presented to provide context and invite inputs from former Chiefs.
  • Updates were shared on the induction of niche technologies and modernisation initiatives aimed at enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities.

UGRO Capital to Acquire Profectus Capital for ₹1,400 Crore

  • UGRO Capital Limited, a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), has proposed to acquire 100% shares of Profectus Capital Pvt Ltd for a cash consideration of Rs 1,400 crore.
  • The acquisition aims to expand UGRO’s MSME loan business.
  • UGRO has signed a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) with existing shareholders of Profectus for the deal.
  • The all-cash deal will be paid in a single tranche at closing, funded by proceeds from UGRO’s recent equity raise.
  • Post-acquisition, Profectus Capital will become a wholly owned subsidiary of UGRO Capital.
  • The acquisition is expected to add approximately Rs 150 crore of annualised profit to UGRO.
  • It is a capital adequacy accretive transaction, meaning it strengthens UGRO’s capital base.
  • The deal is estimated to generate:Rs 115 crore in cost savings through operational efficiencies, Incremental profitability of Rs 150 crore, Boost in Return on Assets (ROA) by 0.6-0.7% post-merger.
  • The combined entity will have a strengthened asset mix with a higher share of secured assets, supporting growth in emerging market and embedded finance businesses.

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the proposed combination involving the acquisition of SML Isuzu Limited by Mahindra and Mahindra Limited.
  • The deal pertains to Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (Acquirer) acquiring SML Isuzu Limited (Target).
  • Mahindra and Mahindra Limited is the flagship company of the Mahindra Group, a leading Indian conglomerate with diversified interests across sectors such as:Automotive, Farm equipment, Agricultural products and services, Power generation equipment, Financial services, Information technology, Logistics, Alternative energy, Aerospace, Steel processing, Trading, Insurance broking, Real estate and infrastructure, Hospitality
