RBI FAQs-Cheque Truncation System
- Truncation is the process of stopping the physical movement of cheques and instead transmitting their electronic images with relevant data (like MICR, date, presenting bank, etc.) to the paying branch through the clearing house.
- Cheque Truncation System (CTS) eliminates the need for physical cheque movement, reduces cost and collection time, and ensures efficient and secure processing.
- The presenting bank captures the cheque data and image using a Capture System that meets RBI’s technical standards under CTS.
- Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures data security, safety, and non-repudiation in CTS transactions.
- The collecting bank digitally signs and encrypts cheque images before sending them to the Centralised Clearing House (CCH) via Clearing House Interface (CHI) or Data Exchange Module (DEM).
Key Highlights :
- The Clearing House performs presentation clearing by processing cheque data and sending images to the paying bank, which can generate a return file for unpaid instruments.
- The clearing cycle is complete after presentation and return clearing sessions are processed successfully.
- Only CTS-2010 standard compliant cheques can be presented for clearing through CTS.
- CTS-2010 Standard Cheques include security features like watermark, invisible bank logo, and void pantograph, and standardised field placement for easier image recognition.
- Non-CTS cheques cannot be cleared under CTS but remain valid negotiable instruments; banks were advised to issue only CTS-2010 cheques from September 30, 2012.
- CTS benefits customers through faster and cheaper fund realisation, treating cheques within a grid as local cheques and eliminating outstation charges.
- Corporates can obtain cheque images from their banks for internal verification.
- CTS implementation began in New Delhi (2008), Chennai (2011), and Mumbai (2013), consolidating cheque clearing into three grids – Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
- Each CTS Grid covers multiple states:
- Chennai Grid: Southern & Eastern states
- Mumbai Grid: Western & Central states
- New Delhi Grid: Northern & Eastern states
- The One Nation, One Grid project aims to merge all three CTS grids into a single national grid, ensuring faster outstation cheque realisation and greater efficiency.
- Customers must use image-friendly permanent ink and avoid alterations or corrections (except date correction) on cheques under CTS.
- Altered cheques are not accepted under CTS; new cheque leaves should be used for corrections in payee name or amount.
- Positive Pay System (PPS) introduced by NPCI adds an additional security layer to prevent cheque frauds by verifying cheque details before payment.
- Banks must enable PPS for cheques of ₹50,000 and above, and may make it mandatory for cheques of ₹5 lakh and above.
- Banks must ensure that stamps or markings do not obscure key cheque details during scanning, ensuring image clarity and data integrity.
- Banks must also verify additional voluntary security features beyond CTS-2010 standards for enhanced protection.
- Physical cheques are retained at the presenting bank for 10 years; customers can request certified images or the original cheque (with possible service charges).

India Advances Global Spice Standards: 8th Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs Session Finalizes Codex Guidelines
- The 8th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) finalized Codex standards for vanilla, large cardamom, and coriander, bringing the total to 19 international spice standards since 2013.
- Codex standards, developed under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC)—a joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO)—protect consumer health and ensure fair international trade.
- While not legally binding, they serve as benchmarks under the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) Agreement of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Key Highlights
- India plays a central role in the CCSCH, which was established in 2013 at India’s initiative, chaired by India, with the Spices Board (Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Kochi) acting as the secretariat. India’s leadership has standardized 19 spices in over a decade, strengthening global spice trade harmonization.
- Vanilla is grown in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, with global production in Madagascar, Indonesia, and Mexico. It requires 21–32°C temperature, 2000–2500 mm rainfall, and light, porous soil. Large cardamom, indigenous to the Eastern Himalayan region, is used as a culinary and medicinal spice, and standardization improves export quality and consistency.
- Coriander, grown in India, Morocco, Russia, and Eastern Europe, benefits from enhanced international trade compliance and quality assessment.
- Codex standardization ensures harmonized quality definitions, consumer protection from adulteration, facilitated global trade, and a stronger scientific basis for food inspections and phytosanitary certification. For India, it strengthens spice exports and enhances its influence in international trade regulations.
