The Government has set the target to eliminate Kala-azar by next year from the country. In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar said, out of 633 Kala-azar endemic blocks, 625 blocks have achieved the elimination target last year.

Dr. Pawar said World Health Organisation (WHO) Neglected Tropical Diseases Road map has the target set for Kala-azar elimination in 2030. She informed the House, that the Government has taken several remedial steps for Kala-azar elimination.


2) Answer: (a)

Maharashtra government will take a loan of 4,000 crore rupees from the Asian Development Bank for setting up medical colleges in 12 districts of the state. There are 12 districts in the state without a single medical college.

These districts include Jalgaon, Satara, Alibaug, Sindhudurg, Usmanabad, Parbhani, Amravati, Ratnagiri, Gadhchiroli, Bhandara, and Ambernath. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had called a meeting of the Medical Education department on August 20, which was also attended by the representatives of the Asian Development Bank.

Uttarakhand’s education department launched an e-governance portal “Samarth” which will provide all administrative and educational updates, including information on entrance examinations, salary structures, and appointments from 5 state universities and 140 public schools.

The portal also provides access to 40 academic study modules.200 assistant professors of science subjects will be sent to the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Bengaluru for special training, while state university teachers receive training in IIM Kashipur.

Alappuzha has become the fifth fully digital banking district in the State of Kerala. This was declared by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Kerala. The places where banking services became digital before Alappuzha are Thrissur, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Kasaragod.

As part of the initiative, at least one digital transaction facility, such as debit-credit card, Internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, etc, has been enabled in 26 lakh bank accounts in 29 banks in the district. Banking services in Thrissur, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Kasaragod have already become digital.

Indian Railways have set up ‘Meghdoot’ machines at Dadar, Thane, and other stations of the Mumbai Division. The unique ‘Meghdoot’ machines use innovative technology to convert water vapor in the air into potable water.

An Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) is a device that extracts water from ambient air. The technology utilizes the science of condensation to extract water vapor from the surrounding atmosphere. Maithri Aquatech’s MEGHDOOT – AWG uses innovative technology to convert water vapor in the air into fresh and clean drinking water.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a two-day National Security Strategies (NSS) Conference in New Delhi, the national capital in pursuance of the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure a safe and secure nation by strengthening all aspects of national security mechanism.

The Conference is being attended by 600 officers from across the country, physically and virtually. Shah emphasized the importance of human intelligence in countering terrorism, underscoring the crucial role of District Level Police officers in identifying emerging terror hotspots.

Indigo Airlines, the country’s largest airline had joined a sustainability initiative led by the World Economic Forum. The airline has become a signatory to India’s “Clear Skies for Tomorrow” India coalition campaign. IndiGo flew its brand new A320 neo aircraft from Toulouse, France, to New Delhi, 10% of which were a Singapore Armed Forces hybrid.

Clean Skies for Tomorrow launched in 2019  provides senior managers and public leaders within and outside the aviation value chain an important mechanism to coordinate the transition to sustainable aviation fuels as an industry component for carbon-neutral flying.

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, in the 45th AGM, announced to build of India’s first and one of the world’s largest Carbon Fibre plants at Hazira, Gujarat.

The plants will have a capacity of 20,000 MTPA based on Acrylonitrile feedstock. Acrylonitrile production will start next year and aim to complete the first phase of the carbon fiber plant in 2025. The company will further integrate its composites business with Carbon Fibre to produce Carbon Fibre composites.

Indian oil explorer and producer Oil and Natural Gas Corp signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with global petroleum giant ExxonMobil Corp for deepwater exploration in India’s East and West coasts.

The collaboration areas focus on the Krishna Godavari and Cauvery Basins in the eastern offshore and the Kutch-Mumbai region in the western offshore. Through the discovery route, ONGC hopes to move to development wherein the inherent strength of ExxonMobil would be beneficial for efficient fast-track monetization.

In Rajasthan, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games have started in more than 11,000 panchayats. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the games at the state-level function organized at Pal Panchayat of Luni block in Jodhpur district.

About 2 lakh 25 thousand teams are participating in these games, in which about 30 lakh players are showing talent. The special feature of these games is that more than one lakh participants are above 50 years of age. At the same time, more than 1,500 players are above 70 years of age.

The ‘Doni Polo Express’ departs from the new ‘Shokhuvi Railway Station’ in Nagaland. Chief Minister Nephiu Rio flagged off the ‘Doni Polo Express’ at the new ‘Shokhuvi Railway Station. After more than 119 years, Nagaland has got its second railway station.

Doni Polo Express was earlier running between Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. Increasing the number of stops of this express, now this express will also stop at Shokhuvi railway station, which is a few kilometers away from Timapur.

The Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) has revealed that four of its startups have been selected by MeitY to represent India at the G20 Digital Innovation Network (DIN). T-AIM is an initiative of the state Government supported by NASSCOM. The four startups – Arficus, Edubuk, Eunimart, and MayaMD supported by the Revv Up program.

Revv Up is a free-of-equity-or-cost acceleration program by T-AIM that is exclusively designed for early-stage AI startups. These startups have been receiving mentorship and knowledge sessions from industry experts, access to global pathways, and technology and IP resources to build scalable businesses.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the J&K Police has launched an online Mobile application “JK Ecop”, an easy way-to-use interface to facilitate common people the Mobile App enables the citizens to use a host of services ranging from registering a complaint to downloading a copy of FIR.

These services range from reporting a traffic violation to reporting an accident. Information about the Highway status in the app will help the citizens to plan their travel. Paying a challan online through this app will not only help the citizens but will also ease the burden of the department.

Nagesh Singh, presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to Thailand. Singh will be replacing ambassador Suchitra Durai and is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

Nagesh Singh is a 1995 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) who has served as Consul General of India in Atlanta. He holds a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics. Bilateral relations between India and Thailand continued to strengthen during 2021, marked by cooperation at regional and sub-regional levels within the framework of ASEAN, Mekong Ganga Cooperation, and BIMSTEC as well as at other multilateral fora.
