Tata Group’s Tata Steel is planning to spend Rs 3,000 crore on R&D by FY26 and is set to roll out the ‘First in India’ seating system for Vande Bharat Express trains. Tata Steel’s Composites division bagged a Rs 145 crore bulk order for seating systems of the Vande Bharat express that includes the supply of complete seating systems for 22 train sets, with 16 coaches in each train set.

Vande Bharat Express, also known as Train 18, is the second fastest train in India, which operates at a speed of 130 km/hr. The company is targeting to be among the ‘Top 5 in technology in steel industry globally by 2030.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the country’s largest online herbarium database, the ‘Indian Virtual Herbarium’ web portal. The portal (https://ivh.bsi.gov.in) has been developed by the Botanical Survey of India under the framework of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Digital India’.

The portal aims to provide complete information on herbarium specimens about the floral diversity of India and other countries stored in the cabinet of the herbarium building through online access. The database created is the largest storage of information about plant diversity in India.

Ministry of Women and Child Development has issued Operational Guidelines regarding the implementation of ‘Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0′.   The scheme has been approved by the Government of India for implementation during the 15th Finance Commission period 202l-22 to 2025-26.

Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 is an Integrated Nutrition Support Programme. It seeks to address the challenges of malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers through a strategic shift in nutrition content and delivery and by the creation of a convergent eco-system to develop and promote practices that nurture health, wellness, and immunity.

The Government announced the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for sugar season 2022-23 (October-September). The FRP of sugarcane has been fixed at Rs 305/quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25%. The decision will benefit around 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their dependents, as well as about 5 lakh workers employed in sugar mills and related ancillary activities.

The cost of production of sugarcane for the 2022-23 marketing year is Rs 162 per quintal. A premium of Rs 3.05 per quintal will be provided for each 0.1 percent increase in recovery over and above 10.25 percent, while there will be a reduction in FRP by Rs 3.05 per quintal for every 0.1 percent decrease in recovery.

The proportion of employed persons working part-time in the 46-59 years age group at all India levels was more than 10 percent between 2017-18 to 2019-20 while in the age group above 60 years, the proportion of employed persons working part-time was more than 15 percent according to the National Statistics Office.

The proportion of employed persons who are employers in the 15+ age group stood at 2.02 percent in 2019-20, down from 2.17 percent in 2018-19 but up from 1.91 percent in 2017-18. In both rural and urban areas, part-timers as a proportion of total employed are more in the 60+ age group among males and urban females.

Digital platform for registration of businesses as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) Udyam portal is nearing the 1-crore mark in its two years of operations.

Aadhaar number-based registration on the Udyam portal is free, paperless, and based on self-declaration. PAN and GST details on investment and turnover of enterprises are sourced automatically from government databases by the portal. Under a single registration, MSMEs can add multiple activities including manufacturing or service, or both unlike under the UAM framework that sought multiple registrations for multiple factories.

LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy Council (K-DISC) and the Kerala ICT Academy (ICTAK) as part of the Connect Career to Campus (CCC) campaign under the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission (KKEM) initiative.

Kerala government aims to boost employability skills with this partnership among the youth of Kerala to get relevant jobs using LinkedIn. K-DISC is a strategic think tank and advisory body established by the Kerala government. ICTAK is a social enterprise created as a public-private partnership (PPP) to teach ICT skills to young people in Kerala.

The character artiste had delivered memorable performances in Hindi films such as ‘Taal’, ‘Fiza’, ‘Asoka’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Krrish’, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ and the web series ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’. filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who collaborated with Mithilesh on Scam 1992, was one of the first from the film industry to pay tribute to the actor.

China launched a terrestrial ecosystem carbon monitoring satellite and two other satellites into the planned orbit from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China’s Shanxi Province. Other satellites launched in this mission include one that collects information related to global ship navigation and flight status and another that provides services for students to participate in space science research and engineering practice.

The carbon monitoring satellite is used for monitoring terrestrial ecosystem, ecology, and resources, evaluating national major ecological projects, as well as providing services for surveying and mapping, meteorology, environment protection, agriculture, and disaster reduction.

South Korea’s first lunar orbiter successfully launched on a year-long mission to observe the Moon with the payload including a new disruption-tolerant network for sending data from space.

The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, nicknamed Danuri, meaning “enjoy the Moon”, launched on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Florida’s Cape Canaveral U.S. Space Force Station. The launch comes as South Korea accelerates its space program, seeking to send a probe to the moon by 2030 and join nine countries working on the Artemis project aimed at returning to the moon by 2024.

Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) were successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun by DRDO and the Indian Army at KK Ranges with the support of Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.

The all-indigenous Laser Guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) protected armored vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from the 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.

Five officers of the Indian Navy’s INAS 314 based at the Naval Air Enclave, Porbandar, Gujarat created a name for themselves by completing the first all-women independent maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission in the North Arabian Sea onboard a Dornier 228 aircraft.

The Navy stated that the first-of-its-kind military flying mission was, unique and is expected to pave the way for women officers in the aviation cadre to assume greater responsibility and aspire for more challenging roles.

Justice Uday U Lalit is set to take over as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on August 27 with the incumbent, NV Ramana, recommending the former as his successor. The Supreme Court will have 30 judges with Ramana’s retirement against a sanctioned strength of 34.

Lalit will have a short tenure of fewer than three months. He is only the second judge after justice SM Sikri elevated directly from the bar who will go on to become the CJI. Sikri was CJI between 1971 and 1973. Lalit was appointed a judge in the Supreme Court in August 2014.

Ravinder Takkar, the managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of telecom operator Vodafone Idea Limited replaces Himanshu Kapania as the telco’s new chairman.

The telco said that Takkar would bring in his 30 years of experience in guiding the company, in his role as chairman. Vi had announced that its chief financial officer Akshaya Moondra would replace Takkar as the firm’s new CEO. The telco’s revenue from operations rose 14% to ₹10,410 crore as against ₹9,152 crores in Q1FY22.

Ranjit Rath has taken over as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of state-run Oil India Ltd (OIL). He replaces Sushil Chandra Mishra who retired on 30 June.

An alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur and with an experience of more than 25 years in the field of geosciences, Rath, before he was appointed the Oil India CMD, Rath was the CMD Mineral Exploration & Consultancy Ltd. For the financial year 2021-22, Oil India had reported its highest ever net profit of ₹3,887.31 crores, rising by 123.20% from the profit of ₹1,741.59 crores of the previous fiscal.

The government has approved an extension in service to Rajiv Gauba as cabinet secretary for a further period of one year beyond 30 August 2022. This is the second extension for the 1982 batch, Jharkhand cadre IAS officers. Gauba was appointed cabinet secretary, a tenured post for two years, in August 2019.

Gauba’s extension, which is meant to provide continuity in the top bureaucracy under the Modi administration, comes at a time when pressure points are developing in the economy over global cues and high inflation has kept food and fuel prices high.

A rescue center, the first of its kind by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in the heart of the city, has been helping injured and rescued wild animals. The government of Tamil Nadu recently announced that the remodeling of Guindy National Park will be done at a cost of ₹20 crores.

 Located inside Guindy National Park, the center currently has an injured pelican and a monkey undergoing rehabilitation in two separate enclosures. While the pelican was found with an injured wing, the monkey was rescued after being bitten by dogs and sustaining foot injuries.

The decisive campaign against British rule was launched this day in 1942 on Mahatma Gandhi’s call at the Bombay session of the Congress on August 8 in his famous “do or die” speech. Although the movement was suppressed by 1944, it played an important role in uniting the common people across the country against British rule.

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family of viruses that causes smallpox.

India has reported four Monkeypox cases so far, three cases in Kerala and one in Delhi. A youth in Kerala presenting monkeypox-like symptoms died, following which state Health Minister Veena George initiated a high-level inquiry.
