The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹6.77 crore on Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Limited for non-compliance with the “Non-Banking Financial Company-Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking Company and Deposit taking Company (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2016”.

The statutory inspection of the company was conducted by RBI with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2019 and March 31, 2020.

Meanwhile, the RBI imposed a fine of Rs 55 lakh on Indian Bank for non-compliance with certain provisions of the Reserve Bank of India (Know Your Customer) Directions, 2016.

This penalty has been imposed in the exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (4) (i) and 51 (1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Also, the RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹10.50 lakh on Muthoot Money Limited, Ernakulam, Kerala for non-compliance with certain provisions of the ‘Monitoring of Frauds in NBFCs (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2016’.

Fairfax-backed, leading Mumbai-based non-banking financial company (NBFC), IIFL Finance Limited (IIFL), has secured USD 100 million in long-term funding, jointly, from Export Development Canada (EDC) and Deutsche Bank.

The NBFC secured USD 50 million from EDC and USD 50 million from Deutsche Bank, respectively.

Key Highlights :

The deal was structured under the aegis of Deutsche Bank as mandated lead arranger, book runner and co-financier.

This would also be IIFL’s second loan from EDC.

Previously, it had secured funding of USD 100 million from EDC in 2019.

IIFL Finance had raised USD 400 million through its maiden dollar bond issue in February 2020.

FY23 credit growth is highest since 2011-12, when it was 19.3%.

Bank deposits expanded 9.58% YoY in FY23, against 8.9% YoY growth seen in the FY22.

The RBI data showed that bank deposit mobilisation lagged behind credit disbursements in FY23.

They raised Rs 15.78 trillion through deposits in FY23, against Rs 13.51 trillion raised in FY22.

The credit in absolute terms rose Rs 17.83 trillion in FY23, up from Rs 10.43 trillion in FY22.

According to the RBI’s Scheduled Bank’s Statement of Position in India, the outstanding credit stood at Rs 136.75 trillion at the end of FY23 (March 24, 2023), up from Rs 118.91 trillion a year ago (March 25, 2022 — FY22).

Outstanding deposits stood at Rs 180.43 trillion, against Rs 164.6 trillion a year ago.

The interest rate on one-year term deposits was in the range of 5-5.6% around the end of March 2022 and moved up to 6-7.25% by the end of March 2023.

The savings deposit rate remained in the range of 2.7-3% in March 2022 and March 2023.

The Union Cabinet approved a project to build an advanced gravitational-wave detector in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of Rs 2,600 crore.

LIGO-India is scheduled to begin its scientific operation from 2030.

LIGO India will be the fifth detector after Virgo of Italy and KAGRA of Japan.

It will be made with the exact specifications of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave \Observatories (LIGO) in Louisiana and Washington in the U.S.

The LIGO-India project is a collaboration between a consortium of Indian research institutions, U.S. observatories, and other international partners.

It will be built by the Department of Atomic Energy and the Department of Science and Technology, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Science Foundation, the US, along with several national and international research and academic institutions.

A special 3 months campaign has been launched by DFS at Gram Panchayat Level covering all districts in the country to saturate all eligible persons under the PMJJBY and PMSBY w.e.f 1st April 2023 to the 30th June 2023.

Under the campaign, camps are going to be organise d at the Gram Panchayat level across all districts in the country by the banks with active participation of the State administration and other Ministries of the Government of India to ensure that benefits of the two Jan Suraksha schemes reach the masses.

The Budget assures to double the UT’s GDP within five years and has themes of good governance, strengthening grass-root democracy, promoting sustainable agriculture, facilitating investment and industrial growth, employment generation, accelerated development and inclusive growth, and women empowerment and social inclusion.

All 18.36 lakh households of Jammu and Kashmir will have functional tap connections by 2023-24.

He also announced a new talent support scheme, ThiranariThervuThittam, for state-run school students that carries a Rs 1,000 monthly stipend.

ThiranariThervuThittam means a scheme to spot and nurture talent.

A stipend of Rs 1,000 would be provided every month until the students complete Class 12.

The Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) has introduced its first solar-powered tourist vessel named ‘Sooryamshu’ in Kochi backwaters, Kerala.

The ₹3.95-crore vessel that can carry up to 100 passengers was built at a yard in Sri Lanka and is among the few in Kochi whose safety and allied features are certified by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

The vessel will have a 6-hour day cruise priced at ₹799 per person in which it will operate in the Marine Drive-Kadamakudy corridor and later 10 km into the sea.

The Union Cabinet gave its nod for inking an agreement with the German development bank, KfW, for securing a loan for the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) project being implemented by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The tripartite agreement will be signed by the State government, KSEB and KfW.

The Central government and KfW had signed an agreement on November 11, 2022 for the ₹1,457-crore Kerala GEC project.

At the current rates, the project will be eligible for a KfW loan of €102.11 million (approximately ₹916 crore) at 3% to 4% interest.

A sum of ₹138.71 crore will be available as a Central government grant.

Both the Law and Finance departments had given the go-ahead for the proposal.

Kerala needs to award the works before November 23, 2023, for securing the Central grant.

Reliance Industries Ltd and its telecom arm Jio Infocomm have raised a total of USD 5 billion in back-to-back foreign currency loans, the largest syndicated loan in India’s corporate history.

Reliance raised USD 3 billion last week from 55 banks and Reliance Jio Infocomm secured additional credit of USD 2 billion from 18 banks.

The USD 3 billion financing closed on March 31 and the add-on facility of USD 2 billion was secured.

Reliance will mainly deploy the funds raised towards its capital expenditure, while Jio would put the money to finance its nationwide 5G network rollout.

The USD 2 billion add-on will be split equally between Reliance and Jio and is likely to be wrapped up by the end of April.

Eighteen banks, including the 15 senior MLABs of the USD 3 billion loan and others joining in the senior phase, are expected to form the syndicate for the USD 2 billion add-on, which is split equally for Reliance and Jio, and is likely to be wrapped up by the end of the month.

MLAB refers to Mandated Lead Arranger and Book Runner.

Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) last syndicated offshore borrowing was a USD 1.45 billion dual-currency financing completed in 2020.

Volodymyr Zelensky has been awarded Poland’s highest Order of the White Eagle award.

He has received the award for his service to security, resilience and the defense of human rights.

Polish President Andrzej Duda presented the award to Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Order of the White Eagle is Poland’s oldest and highest decoration.

It is given to the most eminent persons of Poland and the highest-ranking representatives of foreign countries.

This award was officially instituted on 1 November 1705 by Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland.

The Congress was held during April 3-6 in Washington, USA.
