The Ministry of Defence announced that the 12th edition of the Defence Expo, India’s flagship exhibition on Land, Naval, and Homeland Security systems, will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The exhibition is being planned with events such as Bandhan for forging partnerships between companies; seminars and webinars showcasing start-ups/MSMEs, including cutting-edge technology solutions for future battlefield; Artificial Intelligence in defense. The exhibition is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to achieve self-reliance in defense and achieve an export of $5 billion by 2025.

Maharashtra Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari inaugurated the 22nd ‘Bharat Rang Mahotsav’ at Rabindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai. The five-day drama festival is being jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Culture and P.L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Akademi in the city to pay tribute to our freedom fighters.

Bharat Rang Mahotsav was established two decades ago by the National School of Drama. It aims to stimulate the growth and development of theatre across the country. It is a national festival to showcase the creative works and art theatre workers in India, but it has evolved so much in the past years, that it has reached international stages.

Serena Williams, one of the greatest athletes of all time and a 23-time grand slam singles champion, has announced that she is retiring from professional tennis, indicating she could step away after the upcoming US Open.

Williams has won an Open era record of 23 grand slam singles titles, earning a total of $94,588,910 in prize money and much more in endorsements. She has additionally won four Olympic gold medals, three of them in doubles, and two mixed doubles grand slam titles in 1998.

Sharath Kamal and boxer Nikhat Zareen have been named India’s flagbearers for the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in Birmingham. Sharath, in combination with Sreeja Akula, won the elusive gold in table tennis mixed doubles and a silver in the men’s doubles event while Nikhat clinched boxing gold in the women’s 50kg flyweight category.

Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh were the Indian flagbearers for the opening ceremony.

Nepal wants India to build a hydroelectric project, which was conceived about six decades back, but could not be implemented although it was taken up and abandoned twice by China.

The proposed 1200 MW “West Seti and SR 6” hydropower project is likely to be discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lumbini in Nepal. Modi will have a meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in the birthplace of Buddha. The Deuba government has of late linked the 750 MW West Seri project with the 450 MW SR 6 project and initiated discussion with New Delhi to develop both as a joint storage project with a combined generation capacity of 1250 MW.

James Marape is elected Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea unopposed, as the country’s 11th National Parliament sits for the first time. The victory can be interpreted as an acceptance by the electorate of the policies Marape introduced when he replaced previous Prime Minister Peter O’Neill following a vote of no confidence in May 2019.

Marape highlighted the government’s commitment to the Connect PNG infrastructure program and reform of state-owned enterprises, to ensure they are not all always depending on cash from our national budget, but sometimes in the distant future, they can stand on their own two feet and serve our country better in their functions.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has appointed Pramod Kumar as the chief financial officer (CFO) of the company. Before his appointment to the new position, Kumar served as Executive Director (Finance) of Power Grid Corporation.

Pramod Kumar is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), having experience of 35 years in the power sector involving almost all areas of finance and accounting functions i.e. finalization of corporate accounts, formulation of the capital budget.

The 13th edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise — Ex Vajra Prahar 2022, began at the Special Forces Training School in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh.

The US contingent is represented by personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) and Special Tactics Squadron (STS) of the US Special Forces while the Indian Army contingent is formed by drawing Special Forces personnel under the aegis of SFTS. P V Kamaraj, 68 part of the 4x400m Indian men’s relay team that won bronze at the 1979 Asian Championships in Tokyo, passed away following a massive heart attack in Chennai. Kamaraj retired as a Chief Reservation Officer with the Indian Railways and had contributed immensely to athletics in his hometown Tiruchi and was active in the athletic tournaments of Tamil Nadu.

He won several medals, including gold, silver, and bronze in 400m hurdles in the national inter-state meets and Open nationals from 1977-80. He was a NIS-trained coach and had trained the Tamil Nadu state team for several years.

Former South African international umpire Rudi Koertzen passed away due to a car crash at the age of 73. One of the most respected umpires in world cricket from the late 1990s till 2010, Koertzen officiated in nearly 400 international games.

Koertzen joined the ICC’s Elite Panel in the year 2002. He remained a part of it for eight years. During his tenure, he officiated as an on-field and TV umpire in as many as 397 games, including 128 Test matches, a record 250 ODIs, and 19 T20 Internationals.

Former MP K Maya Thevar, 88 who played a key role in the AIADMK embracing the two-leaves symbol, died owing to age-related ailments at his residence in Dindigul’s Chinnalapatti.

Maya Thevar was the candidate for the first-ever Lok Sabha election faced by the AIADMK after former chief minister MG Ramachandran floated the party in 1972. He chose the two-leaves symbol for seeking a mandate from the Dindigul constituency and won the polls with a margin of over 1.45 lakh votes against DMK’s Pon Muthuramalingam in May 1973.

A Russian rocket successfully launched an Iranian satellite into space named Khayyam, which was launched by a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan.

Iran says the satellite is designed for scientific research including radiation and environmental monitoring for agricultural purposes and no other country will have access to the information it gathers. The satellite fitted with the high-resolution camera will be used for environmental monitoring and will remain fully under its control.
