National Youth Day 2023 is observed on the 12th of January 2023.

On January 12, 1984, the Indian government declared Swami Vivekananda’s birthday as National Youth Day for the first time.

Since then, the day is celebrated nationwide as National Youth Day.

The government’s primary motivation for making the decision was to improve the quality of life for the people of the country by urging young people to draw inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s life and accomplishments to revive youngsters’ enduring vitality and boost the economy of the country.

The National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on 28 February to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’.

The government of India designated 28 February as National Science Day (NSD) in 1986.

On this day Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.

On this occasion, theme-based science communication activities are carried out all over the country.

Gujarat Chief Minister (CM) Shri Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2023 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The festival is being organised by Gujarat Tourism on the G20 theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.

The event is organised after a gap of two years due to the covid 19 pandemic.

Key Highlights:

The International Kite Festival has been held in Ahmedabad annually since 1989 on the occasion of the official celebration of uttarayan.

Apart from Ahmedabad, the festival will also be organised in Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Dwarka, Somnath, Dhordo, and Kevadia.

More than 800 kite flyers from across India and the world will participate and display their unique creations in this Festival.

Axis Bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Karnataka to establish a Centre for Mathematics and Computing at the Institute.

Note:

The Axis Bank Centre for Mathematics and Computing is India’s first comprehensive Academic Research Centre on Mathematics and Computing.

Key Highlights:

It will be spread across 1.6 lakh square feet and will have state-of-art labs and programs for faculty and students from different departments of the institute.

It is expected that over 500 engineers and scientists will benefit from the Centre every year.

The Centre will play a vital role in building the nation’s future as many contemporary and futuristic areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science rely on the foundations of mathematics and computing.

Standard Chartered China has just become the first foreign-invested bank in China to engage in Chinese Treasury bond futures trading.

The move comes as China steps up efforts to draw global investors amid months of foreign money outflows from its $20-trillion bond market.

Standard Chartered Bank (China) Ltd had completed its first treasury bond futures transaction in China, with the permission of regulators.

Treasury bond futures are a key tool to manage interest rate risks, and China’s opening up of the market will allow foreign investors to better participate in its onshore bond market and promote yuan internationalisation.

In February 2022, Standard Chartered Group would invest USD$300 million in its China-related operations over three years, to double its relevant profit contribution by the end of 2024.

Veteran actor-director Aparna Sen was honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the opening ceremony of the 15th edition of the Jaipur International Film Festival.

After receiving the honour, Sen said the Lifetime Achievement Award is not the end road of her journey as a creative person.

Grammy award winner Ricky Kej, film script writer Kamlesh Pandey, screenplay writer-film producer Haider Hale and others were present at the opening ceremony.

More than two hundred producers, directors, and scriptwriters attended the event.

e-NAM, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has won the Platinum Award in the Digital Empowerment of Citizens Category in Digital India Awards 2022 held in New Delhi.

The President of India, Ms. Droupadi Murmu, as Chief Guest of the event, has conferred the Digital India Awards, 2022 to Dr. N. Vijaya Lakshmi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture.

e-NAM is a digital platform integrating 1260 APMC mandis across 22 States and 3 UTs to facilitate online trading of 203 agriculture and horticulture commodities to enable farmers to realize better remunerative prices for their produce.

e-NAM is catalyzing the digital transformation of mandi operations and e-trading of agricultural commodities.

More than 1.74 Crore farmers & 2.39 Lakh traders have been registered on the e-NAM portal.

A total trade consisting of 69 million metric tonnes worth Rs. 2.42 lakh crore has been recorded on the e-NAM platform.

Recent data from Central Pollution Control Board claimed Delhi to be India’s most polluted city in 2022 with PM 2.5 levels more than double the safe limit and the third highest average PM10 concentration.

PM2.5 pollution in the national capital has reduced by over 7 per cent in four years, from 108 micrograms per cubic metre in 2019 to 99.71 micrograms per cubic metre in 2022, reported PTI citing the report by NCAP Tracker.

NCAP Tracker is a joint project of news portal Carbon Copy and a Maharashtra-based start-up ‘Respirer Living Sciences’ and is designed to track India’s progress in achieving clean air targets.

The Centre launched the National Clean Air Programme on January 10, 2019 to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 levels in 102 cities by 20 per cent to 30 per cent by 2024 (with 2017 being the base year).

Some more cities were added to the list, while some were dropped subsequently.

Now there are 131 cities which are called non-attainment cities, as they did not meet the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for the period of 2011-15 under the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme.

In September 2022, the government set a new target of a 40 per cent reduction in particulate matter concentration by 2026.

For the fifth straight year, the Japanese passport is the most powerful among all passports in the world, as it allows visa-free access to as many as 193 countries, according to Henley Passport Index 2023.

India, on the other hand, improved its position by 2 spots from last year, and is currently ranked 85th on the index.

A holder of an Indian passport can travel visa-free to 59 countries (60 in 2022); Mauritanian and Uzbekistan passports are as powerful as that of India.

According to Henley Passport Index, Japanese passport holders can visit 193 out of 227 destinations visa-free.

An Indian passport holder, on the other hand, can visit 59 destinations without a visa.

The Khelo India Senior Women National Kho Kho league is set to take place at Chandigarh University, Punjab.

The league is being organized by the Kho Kho Federation of India and will be held over three phases with full financial support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

A total of 12 teams and close to 200 players are slated to participate.

The Kho Kho women’s league for junior and sub-junior age groups is scheduled from January 16 to 19 at the Alberta Ekka Kho Kho stadium in Hotwar, Ranchi.

The Khelo India women’s leagues, which are being held across multiple sports since 2021, is an initiative taken by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to develop the overall sports ecosystem of the country.

India and Japan are all set to hold the joint Air Exercise, ‘Veer Guardian-2023’ involving the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) at Hyakuri Air Base, Japan from 12 January 2023 to 26 January 2023.

To promote Air Defence cooperation between the countries.

The decision to enhance bilateral defence cooperation and address the emerging security needs of the two countries was made during the second 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial meeting held in Tokyo, Japan, in September 2022.

The Indian contingent participating in the air exercise will include 4 Su-30MKI Sukhoi aircraft , 2 C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft and 1 Ilyushin Il-78 in-flight refuelling tanker, will participate in the exercise.

Meanwhile, the JASDF will deploy its 4 F-2 multi-role attack fighters and 4 F-15 Eagle aircraft.

Virgin Orbit is a carrier company, providing the launch service.

About Keshri Nath Tripathi:

Tripathi was born on 10 November 1934, in Allahabad, UP.

He was governor of West Bengal from July 2014 to July 2019.

A senior advocate of Allahabad high court, he served as a member of the UP Legislative Assembly 6 times.

He represented the Jhunsi seat between 1977-1980 and Allahabad South seat for 5 consecutive terms between 1989-2007.

He was a cabinet minister during the Janata Party regime from 1977 to 1979.

He also served as the Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly thrice between 1991 and 2004.

The father of Laparoscopic surgery in India, Dr. Tehemton E Udwadia passed away at the age of 88 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

About Dr Tehemton Erach Udwadia:

Dr. Tehemton E Udwadia was born on 15 July 1934, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

He is an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital.

Udwadia was the founder and president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons and presided over the association from 1993 to 1998.

He has served as the president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India, the Association of Surgeons of India, and the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia.

He has been the president of the Indian chapter and the World body of the International College of Surgeons.

He is the author of two books, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and Laparoscopic Surgery in Developing Countries.

Kashmir’s renowned poet and first Jnanpith awardee Professor Abdul Rehman Rahi Passed away at the age of 98 in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

Awards & Honors:

Rahi was the youngest Indian to be given the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for “Nawroz-i-Saba”, a collection of his outstanding poems.

In the year 2000, he was also honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri award for Literature & Education.

The Sahitya Akademi also honoured Rahi with the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, India’s highest literary honour in 2000 for recognition of his long contribution to Kashmiri literature and culture.

He received the highest literary award in the country, the Jnanpith award (for the year 2004) in 2007 for his collection ‘Siyah Rood Jaeren Manz’ (In Black Drizzle).
