This is in honour of Slovenian Anton Jansa, who was born on this day in 1773 and is widely known as the pioneer of beekeeping.To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.

The Meghalaya government approved setting up of a commission to look into the problem faced by farmers. State cabinet approved the proposal made by the Agriculture Department to set up the Farmers’ Commission in line with the resolution passed at the ‘farmers’ parliament’, The ‘farmers’ parliament’, first of its kind in the country, was organised last December and was attended by scientists, bureaucrats, apart from farmers, to discuss issues related to the agri situation in the state

United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has conferred the Sasakawa Award 2019 for Disaster Risk Reduction to Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra. He is an Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India. The award was announced  at the Award Ceremony during the ongoing 6th Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2019 at Geneva. The United Nations Sasakawa Award is the most prestigious international award in the area of Disaster Risk Management. The theme of the 2019 Sasakawa award was “Building Inclusive and Resilient Societies”. Dr. P. K. Mishra from India received the 2019 Sasakawa award in recognition of his long-term dedication to improve the resilience of communities most exposed to disasters and his personal commitment to social inclusion as a critical principle to reduce inequality and poverty, enhancing the safety net of the socially and economically marginalized.

The National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) has been awarded a World Bank-funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) project.The project, which is referred to as component 2A, calls for investments in Indian Council of Agricultural Research Leadership in Agricultural Higher Education. With a budget outlay of Rs. 69.41 crore, the three-year project is aimed at establishing partnerships with globally recognised agricultural higher education institutions. It is also for establishing career development centres at agriculture universities. Besides NAARM, Indian Agricultural Statistical Research Institute (IASRI) and National Institute of Agricultural Economics and Policy Research of Indian Council of Agricultural Research will take part in the implementation of the project.

With 400 young Indian men participating across the country to learn laundry lessons to share the responsibility of cleaning clothes along with the female members of their homes, India achieved the Guinness World Records certificate for the largest laundry lesson.National award-winning actor Anil Kapoor joined the function which was initiated by Ariel India and hosted by Mandira Bedi. The event was part of the #sharetheload campaign. Earlier, the largest laundry lesson involved 318 people, achieved by Lion NANOX Team (Japan) at Lion Hirai Research Laboratory, in Edogawa, Tokyo, Japan, on November 29, 2017.

The Indian Navy has successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM), achieving a significant milestone to enhance its anti-air warfare capability.The test-firing of the missile was undertaken on the western seaboard by Indian naval ships Kochi and Chennai. The test-firing of the missile was carried out jointly by the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries.

The Second India Open International Boxing Tournament begins at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati. India has fielded a strong contingent of 38 men and 37 women in the tournament including Mary Kom in 51-kilogram category. 16 countries will participate in the tournament where nearly 200 boxers will vying for the podium. The gold medalist will get 2500 US dollar and Silver medalist will earn 1000 US dollar. The competition will be held in a total of 18 categories, 10 in men and 8 in women.

According to the communique, Indian Naval Ships (INS) and submarines have been visiting Spanish ports during overseas deployments. The visit by the Spanish Navy ship to Mumbai would further strengthen the existing bonds between the two navies
