Goa has become the first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified State and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu are the first Union Territory in the country. In this State and UT, people from all the villages have declared their village as Har Ghar Jal through a resolution passed by the Gram Sabha.

All two lakh 63 thousand rural households of Goa and over 85 thousand of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have access to safe drinking water through tap connection. Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship program of the Central Government which aims at making provision of potable tap water supply to every rural household in the country by 2024.

The Bengaluru-based Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh government for setting up a regional testing laboratory in the Raipur district.

As per the agreement, the national-level testing unit will be established on an area of 10 acres in sector-30 of Nava Raipur Atar Nagar which will have test facilities for transformers, energy meters, transformer oil, switch fuse units, and other electricity-related equipment. Power companies will get a 20 percent rebate in the testing of equipment.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) canceled the license of Deccan Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd, Vijayapur, Karnataka due to inadequate capital and no earning prospects.

It is prohibited from conducting the business of ‘banking’ which includes, among other things, acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits as defined in Section 5(b) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 with immediate effect. Consequently, the bank has ceased to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business.

SEBI came out with new guidelines for Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) and Venture Capital Funds (VCFs) for investing abroad, under which overseas investee firms won’t need to have an Indian connection.

Under the rules, AIFs can invest in securities of companies incorporated outside India. Besides, VCFs are allowed to make investments in off-shore venture capital undertaking, subject to certain conditions. It will have to furnish the divestment details of the overseas investments to the capital markets regulator in a specified format within three working days for updating the overall limit available for overseas investment by these entities.

In a major medical science breakthrough, Israeli scientists have developed the world’s first synthetic embryo outside the womb using stem cells cultured in a petri dish. These cells were cultured without the use of fertilized eggs, bypassing the need for sperm.

The study published in the journal Cell highlights the potential of naïve pluripotent cells to self-organize and functionally reconstitute and model the entire mammalian embryo. The synthetic embryos continued to develop for 8.5 days nearly half of the mouse’s 20-day gestation at which stage all the early organ progenitors had formed.

The Centre has extended the tenure of Drug Controller General of India VG Somani by three months. His term was set to end on 14 August 2022. During the pandemic, the incumbent DCGI has played a key role from the approval of covid-19 vaccines to the approval of lifesaving drugs and ensuring their quality in combatting the covid-19 pandemic.

Before this in 2018, Dr. S. Eswhara Reddy, joint drug controller, was holding the charge of DCGI on Adhoc-basis. Presently, Reddy is in judicial custody over the alleged charges of corruption in the Biocon bribery case.

Life insurance company Aegon Life Insurance has rolled out the #PlayForOurHeroes campaign. It is a digital campaign that uses a game called ‘The Game of Life on the company website — to spread awareness about the importance of life insurance.

This initiative is a small step towards fulfilling that mission of simplifying insurance so that more people understand the importance and urgency to buy insurance – and easily find the right product, without getting overwhelming sales calls.

For the welfare of its troops, the Indian Coast Guard signed MoUs with eight banks to get customized banking services for its personnel deployed across the country.

Along with the IDFC First bank, the MoU was inked with seven other banks including ICICI, Axis, HDFC, Yes Bank, and Punjab National Bank. These MoUs have been signed with the banks keeping in view the welfare of the troops and getting them special salary accounts from the banks.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) fined fintech firm Obopay Mobile Technology INR 5.93 Lakh for noncompliance with the central bank’s rules. The fine was imposed for failing to follow certain master directive provisions concerning prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) and knowing your customer (KYC).

The penalty was imposed under Section 30 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. The RBI issued a show-cause notice to the fintech firm after the central bank observed certain lacunae about KYC compliance.

The Directorate of Agriculture, Jharkhand, and global blockchain technology company, SettleMint has jointly announced the successful launch of seed distribution to farmers based on blockchain technology.

The move is aimed at bringing transparency and authenticity to seeds that the farmers receive under the seed exchange scheme and other schemes. The blockchain platform tracks seed supply distribution from issuing of supply orders from the Directorate of Agriculture, placing of seed demand by District Agriculture Officer, tracking seed distribution from the registered government seed producing agency to distributors, retailers, LAMPS/PACS, FPOs, and finally to the farmers.

IndiGo retained its first position with a 58.8 percent share in the domestic airline market even as it witnessed a drop of 2.5 lakh in the count of total passengers ferried and Vistara finished as the second largest airline in domestic market share.

In terms of occupancy, SpiceJet claimed the top spot with 84.7 percent followed by Vistara at 84.3 percent occupancy. However, SpiceJet’s volumes slipped to 0.8 million passengers from one million in the previous month. In the best on-time performance at four metro spots – Delhi Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, Tata Group airlines showed dominance, grabbing three of the top five spots.

The Border Security Force (BSF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to ensure the safety and security of booking data under its air e-ticket service for the troops of India’s border guarding force.

The MoU is significant in terms of providing better facilities to the personnel of the BSF, which guards 3,323 km of India-Pakistan and 4,096 km India-Bangladesh borders. This service will provide a dedicated online portal with a credit facility of 60 days.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari inaugurated India’s first AC double-decker electric bus in Mumbai. Manufactured by Switch Mobility Ltd (Switch), the electric double-decker has more capacity and can carry nearly twice the number of seated passengers as compared to a single-decker bus.

The electric bus has contemporary styling with feel-good interiors and exteriors. With wide front and rear doors, two staircases, and an emergency door, the bus boats of the latest safety standards. The minister also said the initiative will give a dynamic boost to the sustainable transport sector.

Similar to the key role played by Mastercard’s brand ambassador MS Dhoni, the badminton stars will be a part of Mastercard’s Team Cashless India campaign, which works with merchants and cardholders to create awareness of safety, security, and convenience of digital payments.

Ratan Tata announced an undisclosed investment into startup Goodfellows which offers companionship to senior citizens as a service. The octogenarian industrialist has been an active backer of startups ever since retiring from the helm of the salt-to-software Tata Group and has invested in over 50 companies till now.

Tata said no one minds getting old till you actually get old and also added that getting a good-natured companionship, which we take for granted, is a challenge. Addressing Tata as a boss, a mentor, and also a friend, Naidu said there are 15 million elders who are by themselves. Tata said he would be delighted for this service to grow and mature into something which innovatively changes people’s lives.

Edelweiss Mutual Fund is scheduled to launch India’s first scheme that offers exposure to gold and silver. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for silver were introduced to the Indian market by MF companies with permission from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

The new strategy from Edelweiss aims for equal exposure to the two metals and will periodically adjust. The scheme would invest in shares of gold and silver ETFs managed by other fund houses or Edelweiss since the AMC lacks a single gold or silver fund.

The day was instituted by Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States, after he signed a Proclamation on 19 August 1988. On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 21 August as World Senior Citizen’s Day. It’s a day to remember and celebrate their life journey and thank them for their contribution to society.
