The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has instructed regulated entities, including banks and Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs), to offer personal loan borrowers the choice to switch from a floating interest rate to a fixed rate when resetting interest rates. In a circular on ‘Reset of floating interest rate on equated monthly instalments (EMI) based personal loans the RBI stated the borrowers will also be given the choice to opt for enhancement in EMI or elongation of the tenor. RBI has set a deadline for banks and lenders to implement these personal loan instructions by December 31, 2023.Both existing and new loans will need to follow these instructions.
