National Thermal Engineer Day is observed every year on 24 July to honor thermal engineers and their contribution to society. It also highlights the importance of thermal energy in our daily lives. The day was instituted to recognize the commitment and dedication of thermal engineers, without whom many hi-tech machines and devices would not function at all.

Thermal energy is vital for any country’s growth and technological

advancement. Thermal engineers are among the most important contributors to a country’s growth. They work with heat management systems and help in designing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems (which include heat transfer) into different types of energy.

Malayalam filmmaker KP Kumaran has been honored with Kerala’s highest film award, the JC Daniel Award. Kumaran won the award for his contribution to the Malayalam film industry. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation, and a plaque.

The filmmaker made his directorial debut with Athithi in 1975 and earned fame for his films like Rugmini, which won the National Award for a Best feature film in Malayalam and the Kerala State Film Award in 1989. He is also known for films like Thenthulli, Laxmivijayam, and Thottam.

The winners of the 68th National Film Awards were announced at the press conference at the National Media Centre, New Delhi. Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur announced the award winners. Soorarai Pottru won three of the four biggest awards of the night, while Tanhaji, The Unsung Warrior also took home major trophies.

The National Award for Best Actor was won by Suriya for Soorarai Pottru and Ajay Devgn for Tanhaji, while Aparna Balamurali won the Best Actress Award for her performance in Soorarai Pottru. E-commerce marketplace Flipkart announced it has inked a pact with the Bihar State Skill Development Mission to launch the initiatives of the Supply Chain Operations Academy (SCOA) in the state. The initiative is aimed at creating a pool of skilled supply chain operations talent and imparting relevant industry training and knowledge.

The program involves a 60-day skilling initiative that aims to empower the youth to build careers in various aspects of supply chain management and certify them to increase their employability. The students will be imparted skills through Flipkart’s Learning Management System, an online platform for learning programs, where they can pick up a diverse set of skills through courses developed by industry experts.

India’s spending on research and development (R&D) is among the lowest in the world, per a study conducted by government think-tank NITI Aayog and Institute for Competitiveness. R&D investment in India has declined from 0.8% of the GDP in 2008–09 to 0.7% in 2017-18.

Data shows that India’s gross expenditure on R&D (GERD)is lower than the other BRICS nations. Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa spend around 1.2%, 1.1%, above 2%, and 0.8% respectively. The world average is around 1.8%.

The Centre’s policy think-tank NITI Aayog has made a case for setting up digital banks, which would accept deposits and advance loans through digital means, and suggested a licensing and regulatory framework for such lenders.

Such a bank would be different from the 75 Digital Banking Units (DBUs) — announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Union Budget 2022-23 — which are being set up to push digital payments, banking, and fintech innovations in underserved areas. Banks and fintech businesses that offer digital banking services rely primarily on digital channels that organically have high-efficiency metrics relative to incumbent commercial banks.

India received 87 billion dollars in remittances in 2021, the top remittance recipient, and way ahead of countries like China and Mexico, according to a World Health Organisation report. The report by the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health said that in 2021 the top five remittance recipients in current US dollars were India, China, Mexico, the Philippines, and Egypt.

With $87 billion, India was the top remittance recipient among low- and middle-income countries, as per 2021 estimates, way ahead of China and Mexico’s 53 billion dollars, the Philippines (36 billion dollars), and Egypt (33 billion dollars).

India dropped three spots globally for mobile speeds to rank 118 in June, with median mobile download speeds falling to 14.00 Mbps from 14.28 Mbps in May, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index. India’s median fixed download speeds saw a slight increase to 48.11 Mbps in the previous month from 47.86 Mbps in May.

According to the June Speedtest Global Index, Norway retained the top spot for overall global median mobile speeds, while Chile reclaimed the number one position from Singapore, which came in second for overall global fixed broadband speeds.

The Border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh held talks on curbing trans-border crimes and taking necessary measures to ensure peace and tranquillity along the border at the 52nd Director General-level coordination conference.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a Deen Dayal Upadhyaya State Employees Cashless Medical Scheme to provide cashless medical facilities to more than 75 lakh people including 22 lakh state government employees, pensioners, and their dependents.

Under this, the eligible people will get cashless medical facilities at government-run institutions, medical colleges, and hospitals without any financial limit, and also, cashless medical facilities up to Rs 5 lakh will be available at hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Besides, medical insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh is also being provided to the registered workers of the Construction Workers Welfare Board.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government presented its maiden budget of ₹155,859.78 crores for 2022-2023 with no additional taxes and announced providing 300 units of free electricity to every household. Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who presented a paperless budget in the state assembly, said the state’s outstanding debt would rise from the current ₹283,756.82 crores to ₹305,361.44 crores in 2022-2023.

The government also announced the setting up of 117 mohalla clinics across the state in the first year and 16 new medical colleges over the next five years. It plans to set up 117 mohalla clinics for which an initial allocation of ₹77 crores and An amount of ₹450 crores will be given in the form of incentives to paddy growers who adopt non-conventional methods of direct seeding rice.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) slashed its growth forecast for India to 7.2 percent for FY23 from 7.5 percent estimated earlier citing higher than anticipated inflation and also raised its inflation forecast for India to 6.7 percent for FY23 from 5.8 percent projected earlier.

Bajaj Allianz General Insurance announced the launch of its add-on motor insurance cover, called ‘Pay As You Consume’ (PAYC) under the IRDAI’s Sandbox Regulations, and launched a full-fledged cover under motor insurance products.

The pay-as-you-consume add-on cover can be opted for by the customer along with the basic OD plan under Package Product, Bundled, and Standalone OD cover. Customers can choose coverage based on their vehicle usage, further to which the premium will be calculated, i.e., kilometers are driven annually. Customers can also avail of an additional benefit in premium for their safe driving.

NASA announced that it awarded a contract to SpaceX to launch Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on the company’s Falcon Heavy rocket in October 2026 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The contract is valued at $255 million for the launch and other mission-related costs.

Roman is the next large, or flagship, astrophysics mission after the James Webb Space Telescope. The spacecraft features a 2.4-meter primary mirror, donated to NASA a decade ago by the National Reconnaissance Office, with a wide field instrument and a coronagraph to conduct research in cosmology, exoplanets, and general astrophysics.
