Unclaimed deposits with banks have seen a notable 28% year-on-year increase, soaring to Rs 42,270 crore by March 2023, up from Rs 32,934 crore in the fiscal year 2022.Among the unclaimed deposits, public sector banks hold a significant share, amounting to Rs 36,185 crore, while private sector banks account for Rs 6,087 crore as of March 2023.RBI’s Involvement: Banks follow a practice of transferring unclaimed deposits from dormant accounts of 10 or more years to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. RBI’s Directive: In an effort to tackle the issue, the RBI has instructed banks to publish lists of unclaimed deposits from accounts inactive for a decade or longer on their official websites. Centralised Web Portal (UDGAM): The RBI has introduced a centralised web portal called Unclaimed Deposits Gateway to Access Information (UDGAM). This portal facilitates the search for unclaimed deposits across various banks.‘100 Days 100 Pays’ Campaign: The RBI has initiated a campaign named ‘100 Days 100 Pays,’ urging banks to identify and settle the top 100 unclaimed deposits of each bank in every district within a 100-day timeframe. Refunds under Campaign: At the conclusion of the ‘100 Days 100 Pays’ campaign, 31 major banks, constituting over 90% of unclaimed deposit balances with the DEA Fund, have successfully refunded Rs 1,432.68 crore.

A specially designed INSPIRE membership card will allow senior citizens to access healthcare benefits, enhanced banking services and special interest rates on fixed deposits (FD).This all-in-one product is packed with multiple benefits to help seniors retire with confidence. As part of the INSPIRE programme, Bandhan Bank also plans to set up dedicated senior citizen help desks at its branches to ensure personalised service. The fee discounts include doctor consultations, medical check-ups and dental care through its partner healthcare providers. The bank also plans to have additional features like direct access to phone banking officers to ease senior citizens while availing banking services. In addition, trained executives will be assigned to handhold senior citizen customers who wish to avail of banking services through the mobile app, internet, SMS and missed call facilities round the clock. Regarding preferential fixed deposit rates for senior citizens, Bandhan Bank offers 8.35 per cent interest on 500-day FDs. It provides 7.5 per cent annual interest to seniors for tax-saver FDs. In August, 2023 the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) authorised the bank to disburse civil pensions to the central government employees on behalf of the Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) under the finance ministry, marking a major milestone in its journey.

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has given the green light to a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fortifying urban water and sewerage systems for approximately 2 million people in Tamil Nadu, one of India’s most urbanised states. According to the World Bank, the newly approved USD 300 million Tamil Nadu Climate Resilient Urban Development Program is set to enhance access to quality water and sewerage services, promoting climate-resilient cities in the face of escalating climate shocks such as floods and droughts. The program will target 21 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), upgrading their delivery systems to ensure efficient water supply and sewerage services. The $300 million loan from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will use the blended financing instrument of Program-for-Results (PforR) with Investment Project Financing (IPF) to link disbursement of funds directly to the achievement of results while providing technical assistance. The Program loan has a maturity of 32 years with a grace period of 7 years.

India will launch an app that will enable companies to track their live cargo across land, rail, sea, and air. The app has garnered interest from over 700 companies across courier, logistics, shipping, and manufacturing. These companies have signed up on the app which the government will launch soon. provide real-time tracking details and vehicle visibility. The aim of the app is to enhance tracking capabilities, providing real-time visibility into the movement of trucks, trains, and air couriers. The initiative is part of India’s plan to streamline logistics and reduce costs. India’s logistics cost was 7.8-8.9% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in fiscal year 2022. India wants to reduce it to 5-6%.The app also aligns with India’s broader plan to improve its ranking in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index, from 38 currently down to 25.

The MSE Scheme for Promotion and Investment in Circular Economy (MSE SPICE Scheme) is the first-ever scheme in the Government to support circular economy projects which will be done through credit subsidy and will lead to realising the dream of MSME sector towards zero emissions by 2070The MSE Scheme on Online Dispute Resolution for Delayed Payments is a first of its kind scheme to synergise legal support with modern IT tools and Artificial Intelligence to address the incidences of delayed payments for Micro and Small Enterprises. The Support for Commercialisation of IP Programme (MSME – SCIP Programme) will enable the innovators in the MSME sector to commercialize their IPR. In addition, the ZED Scheme of the Ministry has now been made completely free for women led MSMEs. The government guarantees payment of 100 percent financial support for the certification cost. These two interventions were also launched by the Union Minister .The Ministry exchanged Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with the implementing agencies SIDBI (for MSME GIFT and MSME SPICE schemes) and with National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (for NICSI) for MSE ODR scheme. The Raising & Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) programme is assisted by the World Bank. It aims to improve the performance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It was launched in 2022.Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for MSME GIFT and MSME SPICE schemes and National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (for NICSI) for MSE ODR scheme.

The Karnikara Mandapam at Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple, in Kerala, India; Pipal Haveli, in Punjab, India; and Sikami Chhen, in Kathmandu, Nepal, were awarded the Special Recognition for Sustainable Development for their transformative heritage practices which contribute to larger principles of sustainable development. Every year, since 2000, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation programme has been recognizing the efforts of private individuals and organizations in restoring, conserving, and transforming structures and buildings of heritage value in the region. This year, the awards panel recognised twelve projects from China, India, and Nepal. Five projects are from China, six are from India, and one is from Nepal.

Incorporation of Diverse Mobility Options: The collaboration aims to incorporate a diverse range of transportation modes, including local trains, autorickshaws, cabs, and metro services, into the Google Maps interface to offer users comprehensive and integrated mobility solutions. The company has tied up with open network mobility app Namma Yatri to bring the schedule, booking and all other related services of Kochi Metro for Google Maps users.

Indian hockey players Hardik Singh and Savita Punia have won major awards at the FIH Hockey Star Awards for the 2023 season.  Singh was named the men’s player of the year while Punia won the best women’s goalkeeper of the year award.
