  • The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) launched India’s 1st ‘One Health’ consortium to carry out surveillance of important bacterial, viral and parasitic infections of zoonotic as well as transboundary pathogens.
  • India signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia for DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) fertilizer supply. 
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on a five day official visit to Israel at the invitation of Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel Yair Lapid. 
  • World Bank President David Malpass met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Washington and discussed India’s efforts on climate change action.
  • The second edition of Naval Commanders’ Conference of 2021 will be held in New Delhi from Oct 18th to 22.
  • Chairman of Indian Council for Cultural Relations ICCR Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, India will host young leaders from 75 democracies under the initiative Gen-Next Democratic Network.
  • India and UK held their inaugural maritime dialogue in a virtual format as agreed in the India-UK Roadmap 2030 for future relations.
  • Ministry of Steel, Government of India(GoI) and the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in the mining and steel sectors, with special focus on coking coal, in Moscow during the Russian Energy Week(REW)13-15 October 2021.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 7 newDefence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) that were carved out of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and dedicated them to the nation.
  • RailTel Corporation of India Ltd (RailTel), under the Ministry of Railways,has signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a research centre under the Department of Telecommunication, Ministry of Communications, to cooperate in diverse areas of telecom with a focus on boosting modernisation and expansion of community networks in India.
  • India will participate in the Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan & the meeting is being hosted by Russia.
  • Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh launched Web Based Project Monitoring Portal (WBPMP) for Military Engineer Services (MES) at New Delhi.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off Modi Van under the ‘Seva Hi Sangathan’ programme to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing 20 years as the Head of Government.
  • The Central Government has kept the interest rates on ‘Small Savings Schemes’ (SSS) unchanged for the third quarter of Financial Year 2022, ie; from 1st October 2021 to 31st December 2021.
  • The Minister of State (MoS) for Communication, Devusinh Chauhan, participated in the Ministerial Roundtable Session of the 50th-anniversary edition of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Digital World 2021, which was held in Vietnam and hosted by the government of Vietnam.
  • Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Cooperation inaugurated 14 projects worth Rs 299 crore and laid foundation stones of 12 projects worth Rs 643 crore from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 806-bedded Vishram Sadan at the National Cancer Institute in Haryana’s Jhajjar Campus of AIIMS, New Delhi.
  • The 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held in Goa November 20,the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has announced.
  • Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change, virtually participated in the Like-Minded Developing Countries (LMDC) Ministerial meeting titled “Preparations for COP 26 on Climate Change – Expectations and Challenges”.
  • The Central Government has constituted a Working Group (WG) to be headed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PMFBY, currently Ritesh Chauhan to roll out an overhauled Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) from Kharif 2022.
  • NITI Aayog along with ISRO has launched the Geospatial Energy Map of India which will provide a holistic picture of all energy resources of the country. 
  • UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Elizabeth Truss will arrive in New Delhi on a three-day visit to India. 

CURRENT AFFAIRS: INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  • The 8th Edition of joint military exercise MITRA SHAKTI between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army culminated in Ampara, Sri Lanka.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released the ‘Global Financial Stability Report-2021’, that discusses the adaptation of cryptocurrencies in emerging markets, the report mainly discusses ‘Cryptoization’.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Minister of Israel Yair Lapid, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Foreign Minister of United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a meeting through video conferencing.
  • India and Israel have agreed to resume negotiations on Free Trade Agreement next month and the confidence that negotiations will be concluded by June next year.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) released the ‘Global TB report’ for 2021, where it highlighted the effects of COVID-19 which led to a huge reversal in the progress of Tuberculosis (TB) elimination.
  • The union minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman made a week-long official visit to the USA (United States of America) to attend the Annual Meetings of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meetings, India-US Economic and Financial Dialogue, and other associated investment meetings.
  • In accordance with the ‘World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2021 report’ by International Energy Agency (IEA), almost USD 4 trillion investment into clean energy is required by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement pledge to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. 
  • In accordance with the report by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), there is dire need of cleaning up the transport sector to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contain global warming.
  • Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will not attend the UN COP26 (Conference of the Parties) climate summit in Glasgow, the Kremlin.
  • Bank of Maharashtra reported a 107 per cent year-on-year jump in second quarter net profit at ₹264 crore against ₹130 crore in the year ago quarter.
  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan on its Grey List.
  • The United Nations says more than 700,000 people have been displaced by the worst floods to hit South Sudan in decades.

  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated the 29th Hunar Haat at Rampur in Uttar Pradesh.
  • In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the J&K administration and the Dubai Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Srinagar and entered into an agreement that will help Jammu and Kashmir union territory to scale new heights in Industrialization and sustainable growth.
  • The Himachal Pradesh government has procured a record amount of apple this season in over a decade.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: BANKING AND ECONOMY

  • Kerala Bank has sought the permission of the Reserve Bank of India to collect deposits from NRI’s, eyeing the ₹1,50,000,000 crore NRI deposits credited to various commercial and PSU and private sector banks in the State.
  • Bank of India (BoI) has announced a 35 basis points (bps) reduction in home loan interest rate and a 50 bps reduction in vehicle loan interest rate.
  • Vested Finance, a platform for investing in foreign stocks for Indians has partnered with SBM Bank, the Indian subsidiary of State Bank of Mauritius and launched a new solution named ‘Vested Direct’ for facilitating forex transfers at low costs.
  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) increased its ambition to deliver climate financing to its Developing Member Countries (DMCs) from 2019–2030 by $20 billion to $100 billion.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of one crore rupees on the State Bank of India and 1.95 crore rupees on Standard Chartered Bank.
  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) had a ₹ 1,000-crore dedicated fund for providing credit guarantees to 10,000 farmer produce organisations (FPOs) will be housed in “Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for FPOs” (CGFTFPO) under the trusteeship of NABSanrakshan Trustee Private Limited (NTPL).
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the exercise of power under sub-section (2) of Section 35 A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, RBI withdrew all restrictions imposed on Hindu Cooperative Bank Limited, Pathankot, Punjab.
  • The BSE (Formerly Bombay Stock Exchange) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Business Leadership League (BLL). 
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) constituted a 4-member advisory committee on settlement orders and compounding of offences. 
  • Google Payment India Private Limited reported its revenues for the financial year 2020-21 as ₹8 crore.
  • ICICI Prudential Life Insurance reported a 6 per cent jump in its net profit for the second quarter of the fiscal, aided by robust growth in premium income.
  • During July to September 2021, PhonePe saw 33.6 per cent growth in transactions from the previous quarter at 526.5 crore, while the value of transactions grew 23.3 per cent to ₹9,21,674 crore.
  • Utkarsh Small Finance Bank Limited has announced the inauguration of its first branch in the city of Chennai and in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), a Telecom operator and Larsen and Toubro (L&T), an Indian Multinational conglomerate company have joined hands for a pilot project to test 5G-based smart city solutions.
  • Tata AIG General Insurance Co. Ltd. launched a ‘Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS)’ Insurance for drone owners & operators.
  • IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company Limited (IndiaFirst Life) ,a joint venture of Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India introduced ‘’IndiaFirst Life Saral Bachat Bima Plan’’.
  • National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) in collaboration with Chainflux has launched a blockchain platform for gold bullion named ‘NSE-Shine’. 
  • Small businesses and start-ups running on a subscription model are losing out on users and timely payments due to the Reserve Bank of India’s new rule on recurring payments.
  • The Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore on Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) and ₹78 lakh on Western Union Financial Services for non-compliance with certain directions.
  • In its ‘2021 Article IV consultations with India’ report, International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reduced India’s potential GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth forecast in the medium term by 25 basis points (bps) to 6 percent from 25 percent due to the impact of COVID-19 on investments and labour markets.
  • Agri-fintech firm Dvara E-Dairy Solutions Private Limited has entered into a collaboration with Jana Small Finance Bank (Jana SFB) to service small dairy farmers by empowering small and medium dairy farmers with financial and cattle management solutions using digital technologies.
  • NABSanrakshan Trustee Private Limited (NTPL), a subsidiary of NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) signed a trust deed for Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Farmer Producer Organisations (CGFTFPO).
  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the acquisition of worldwide healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) services of Hinduja Global Solutions Ltd(HGS) along with certain assets, contracts and employees by Betaine B.V.
  • Centre in consultation with RBI has decided to issue four tranches of Sovereign Gold Bonds from October 2021 to March 2022. 
  • Capital markets regulator Sebi has asked investment advisers to refrain from dealing in digital gold, which is an unregulated product.
  • Central Board of Direct Taxes, CBDT has issued refunds of over 92 thousand 961 crore rupees to more than 63 lakh 23 thousand taxpayers between 1st of April to 18th of October this year
  • Oil futures now rose and were near multi-year highs as an energy supply crunch continued across the globe. 
  • Secretary of Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) Tuhin Kanta Pandey has said that dividend tranches of about 296 crore rupees have been received from Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC) and 233 crore rupees from Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).

  • The Central Government gave Navrang Saini, Whole Time Member, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), an additional charge as the Chairperson of IBBI. 
  • Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen Presided over the Swearing in Ceremony of Alexander Schallenberg as the new Chancellor of Austria at the Hofburg palace in Vienna, Austria.
  • The World Steel Association (WSA) appointed Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Steel Limited as the Chairman of WSA for the period 2021-22.
  • Balasubramanian has been elected Chairman of Association of Mutual Funds in India, at the recently concluded board meeting of AMFI.
  • Sahdev Yadav, former Secretary General of IWLF, was unanimously elected as the President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF).
  • OnePlus, has announced the appointment of Navnit Nakra, as its India CEO and Head of the OnePlus India region.
  • Barbados has elected its first ever president as it prepares to become a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth as head of state.

  • The Director General (DG) of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus honoured the late, Henrietta Lacks with a ‘WHO Director-General’s award’, for recognizing her world-changing legacy, who died of cervical cancer, 70 years ago, on 4 October, 1951.
  • An Indian Social Enterprise ‘Takachar’, under the leadership of Vidyut Mohan was named as the winner of inaugural ‘2021 Earthshot Prize’ that was created by the United Kingdom’s Prince William to reward people fighting to save planet earth.

  • An Indian-American astronaut is part of NASA-SpaceX’s third mission to the International Space Station (ISS). 
  • OneWeb has partnered with Galaxy Broadband, a Canadian distribution partner, to deliver OneWeb’s high-speed, low-latency communications services across Canada and the wider Arctic Region.
  • China has successfully launched its 1st solar exploration satellite into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province aboard a Long March-2D rocket. 
  • On Oct 16, 2021, China launched Shenzhou-13 crewed mission, the country’s first long-duration stay aboard, carrying three astronauts – two men and one woman.
  • NASA has launched a first-of-its kind mission called ‘Lucy Mission‘ to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids.
  • NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope observations of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa have revealed the presence of persistent water vapor  in ‘Europa’, the icy moon of Jupiter.
  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, have discovered that a particular gene (DLX1) has an important role to play in the growth and development of prostate cancer.
  • On Oct 19, 2021, European commercial drone and software developer FIXAR tied up with Paras Aerospace, a subsidiary of Paras Defence.
  • The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune has developed a new ‘Decision Support System’ (DSS) and enhanced the existing ‘Air Quality Early Warning System’ (AQEWS) for Delhi-NCR.

  • A Russian actress Yulia Peresild and a film director Klim Shipenko spent 12 days on the International Space Station (ISS) filming 30 minutes duration scenes for the film “The Challenge”.

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is hosting a Hackathon titled “Aadhaar Hackathon 2021”  for young innovators.

  • India has ranked 40th out of 43 pension systems across the world in the 2021 Mercer CFS Global Pension Index survey.
  • India is ranked at 71st position in the Global Food Security (GFS) Index 2021 out of 113 countries with a score of 2 points.

  • STPI FinBlue, Chennai signed an MoU with ASEAN Financial Innovation Network Ltd (AFIN) to explore cross border collaboration.
  • Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation Ltd (TANFINET) has signed the Master Service Agreement for the implementation of BharatNet Project in Tamil Nadu with various system integrators.

  • On Oct 16, 2021, India beat Nepal, 3-0, to win the 2021 SAFF Championship final title at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives.
  • Nagaland capital Kohima will host the South Asian Cross Country Championship on 15 th January 2022 & meanwhile the 56th National Cross Country Championships which is also being hosted by Nagaland will be clubbed with the South Asian Federation Cross Country Championships.
  • The ICC has partnered with UNICEF, has announced their partnership to raise awareness about the mental health issues and wellbeing amongst children and adolescents.
  • Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma won the men’s elite race in a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes and 1 second & Kenya’s Joycline Jepkosgei won the women’s race in a blistering 2:17.43 in London, United Kingdom.
  • Ace Indian fencer Bhavani Devi has won the Women’s Sabre Individual event at the Charlellville National Competition in France.
  • The 2021 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament was held from October 04 to 17, 2021 at Indian Wells, California, USA.
  • The 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster P Iniyan won the La Nucia Open chess tournament 2021 held in La Nucia, Spain.
  • The 16-year-old Indian Grandmaster (GM) Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has won the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour 2021 finals after defeating Christopher Yoo of the USA (United States of America).
  • Australia fast bowler James Pattinson has retired from international cricket ahead of the 2021–22 Ashes series.
  • Indonesia beat defending champion China, 3-0, to win the Thomas Cup final played at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus, Denmark &  In the Uber Cup, China beat defending champions Japan 3-1, to clinch their 15th Uber Cup trophy.
