On 27 December 2014, the Prime Minister put forth the suggestion to celebrate International Yoga Day at the UN General Assembly with the motive of raising awareness about the importance of yoga to the public all over the world. Finally, International Yoga Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 December 2014 and then the proposed draft resolution was endorsed by 170 member states. The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June 2015 all over the world.

The International Yoga Day 2021 Theme will be “Yoga for Well-Being.” This International Yoga Day 2021 Theme will be celebrated at COVID-19 times when every person is in some or other way affected by the pandemic. The focus of this year’s International Yoga Day 2021 Theme is to promote how regular yoga practice can keep people healthy and active in their day-to-day life. Yoga is playing an important role in the rehabilitation of the COVID-19 patients who are in quarantine and isolation as it will be helpful in reducing their anxiety and unknown fears. The International Yoga Day 2021 will be celebrated online as the 7th annual International Yoga Day will be broadcasted live on UN WebTV on 21st June 2021.
