Petascale Super Computer PARAM GANGA installed at IIT Roorkee

Petascale supercomputer PARAM GANGA installed at IIT Roorkee

What is the news :

  • Param Ganga — a made-in-India Petascale supercomputer has been deployed at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
  • It is Installed by B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Roorkee.
  • The supercomputer is capable of supercomputing at 1.66 PFLOPS (Peta Floating-Point Operations Per Second).

About PARAM GANGA :

  • The supercomputer has been developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing under the guidance of the National Supercomputing Mission.
  • Developed under a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, its goal is to offer computational power to the user community of IIT Roorkee as well as neighbouring academic institutions,
  • IIT Roorkee had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CDAC earlier to establish state-of-the-art supercomputing facilities involving critical components like motherboards for servers, direct contact liquid cooling data centres in India.
  • IIT Roorkee will carry out advanced research and capacity building using this supercomputing infrastructure developed under NSM. I am happy to see that the critical components of PARAM Ganga, such as motherboards for compute nodes and direct contact liquid cooling data centres, are manufactured in India as per the Government of India initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

What is the idea :

  • The basic idea behind building a Petascale Supercomputer with manufactured in India components is to lead the path towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat and accelerate the problem-solving capacity in multidisciplinary domains simultaneously.
  • To this effect, “PARAM Ganga”, the new high-performance computational (HPC) facility would aid researchers to solve complex problems of national importance and global significance.
  • The new HPC infrastructure will serve as an essential compute environment for the modern-day research along with their theoretical and experimental work.

What is supercomputer :

  • A supercomputer is a computer with a high level of performance compared to a general-purpose computer.
  • Performance of a supercomputer is measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPS) instead of million instructions per second (MIPS).
  • First supercomputer of India – Param 8000
  • First supercomputer in the world – CDC 6600

Advantages of Supercomputer

  • Cost Effective. Companies that use supercomputers saves a lot of time in managing tasks.
  • A supercomputer offers enhanced protection by decrypting the password.
  • Very high Speed.
  • Useful in Complex Tasks.
  • Environment friendly.

Disadvantages of Supercomputer

  • Bigger Physical Size
  • High Maintenance cost
  • Required high Storage
  • Heat Release
  • High Power Consumption
