Selection Process of PM of India:
Before going to the list of Prime Ministers of India PDF, you should know how the prime minister is elected in India. In the Lok Sabha election, the alliance or party which gets the majority of seats is the winning party. The PM candidate of the winning party or alliance is selected as the Prime Minister of India. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President of India.
Eligibility Criteria of Prime Minister:
A candidate has to follow the eligibility criteria mentioned below to become a Prime Minister. The candidate must be:
- a citizen of India.
- should be a member of the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. If the person elected as prime minister is neither a member of the Lok Sabha nor of the Rajya Sabha, then he must become a member of the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha within six months.
- of above 25 years of age (in the case of a seat in the Lok Sabha) or above 30 years of age (in the case of a seat in the Rajya Sabha).
Role and Powers of Prime Minister of India:
For the Indian government, Prime Minister acts as the chief executive. As per the Indian Parliamentary system, the President is the head of the government law. But his executive powers are vested with the PM and the council of ministers. He is the chief advisor to the president. Also, he is the head of the council of ministers. The Prime Minister is responsible for aiding the President in his/her work relating to the government. The Prime Minister, in consultation with the Cabinet, schedules and attends the sessions of the Houses of Parliament and is required to answer the question from the Members of Parliament.
Some specific ministries/departments are not allocated to anyone in the cabinet but the Prime Minister himself. The Prime Minister is usually always in-charge/head of:
- Appointments Committee of the Cabinet;
- Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions;

- Department of Atomic Energy; and
- Department of Space.
