1. A man can row a boat at a speed of 10 km/hr in still water. He goes to a certain point upstream and back to the starting point in a river. The speed of the flowing water is 4 km/hr. What is the average speed of the boat for that journey?

1. Rajiv can swim at 10 km/hr in still water. The river flows at 3 km/hr and it takes 12 hours more upstream than downstream for the same distance. How far is the place?

1. The speed of a boat in still water is 18 km/hr and the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr. It takes a total 11 hours to row upstream from point X to Point Y and downstream from Point Y to Point Z. If the distance from X to Y is one third of the distance between Y and Z. What is the total distance travelled by the boat (both upstream and downstream)?
1. 190 km
2. 180 km
3. 210 km
4. 170 km
5. 105 km

Downstream speed = 9+6 = 15 km/hr
Upstream speed = 9-6 = 3 km/hr
Now total time is 28 hours
If distance between A and B is d, then distance between B and C = d/2
Now distance/speed = time, so
d/15 + (d/2)/3= 28
Solve, d = 120 km

Downstream speed = 40/5 = 8 km/hr
Upstream speed = 40/10 = 4 km/hr

So, speed of stream = 1/2*(8-4) = 4/2 = 2 km/hr

Speed downstream = 5/x
Speed upstream = 4/x
40/(5/x) + 40/(4/x) = 9
X = ½
So, Speed downstream = 10 km/hr, Speed upstream = 8 km/hr.
Rate of the stream = ½(Speed of downstream – Speed of upstream)

= 1/2 * 2 = 1 km/hr

Let the speed of boat be s,

According to the question,

128/60 = 48/s-3 – 48/s+3

128/60 = 48(1/s-3 – 1/s+3)

135 = s2 +3s -3s – 9

s2 = 144
s= 12

The speed of boat in still water = 12 km/hr

Downstream speed = (12 + 3) = 15 km/hr
Upstream speed = (12 – 3) = 9 km/hr
Total time taken =630/15+630/9
=42+70==>112 hrs.

Speed of downstream : Speed of upstream = 3 : 1(3x, x)
The ratio of speed of boat in still water and speed of stream is,

= > (3x+x)/2 : (3x-x)/2
= > 4x/2 : 2x/2
= > 2 : 1

Let the speed of the stream be x km/hr.
Upward  speed = (5 – x)km/hr.
Downward speed = (5 + x)km/hr

According to the question,
= > 14/(5+x) + 9/(5-x) = 5

=> (70 – 14x + 45 + 9x) / [(5+x) (5 –x)] = 5

= > 115 – 5x = 125 – 5x2

= > 5x2 – 5x – 10 = 0

= > x2 – x – 2 = 0

= > x = 2, -1(eliminate)
=> x = 2 km/hr

Speed of stream = 2 km/hr

Speed of still water = 10 km/hr

Speed of the flowing water = 4 km/hr

The average speed of the boat for that journey is,

=> Total Distance/ Time

=> 2x/ (x/(10+4) + (x/(10-4))

=> 2x/ (x/14 + x/6)

=> 84/10

=> 8.4 km/hr

x/(10-3) – x/(10+3) =12

x/7 – x/13 =12

13x-7x / 91 =12

= > X= 182 km

The speed of a boat in still water is 18 km/hr and the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr

Speed of upstream= 18-3 =15 km/hr

Speed of downstream= 18+3 =21 km/hr

The distance from X to Y is one third of the distance between Y and Z

= > Distance(X to Y) = 1/3 * Distance(Y to Z)

Distance (Y to Z) is,

X/ (3*15) + X/21 = 11

X/45 +X/21 =11

X = 315 /2 = 157.5 Km

Distance from X to y= 157.5 *(1/3) = 52.5 km

Total Distance = 157.5+52.5

=> 210 km
